Once the older students were assembled at their tables and the first years filed in, Mortimer cast Sonorous on himself and rose ."Welcome to Sonora for the new first years and welcome back for all older students. First years, you should have receieved a blank badge at the end of Orientation. You will dunk the badge in the Sorting Potion and it will turn the color representing your house which are blue for Aladren, yellow for Teppenpaw, red for Crotalus, and brown for Pecari. Afterwards, you may join your house table."

After the first years had been settled, Mortimer continued."Would Nathaniel Mordue and Caitlin Pierce please come up and get your Head Student badges." He continued. "In addition I'd like to call up Sophia Priory, Zara Jackson, Jessica Hayles and Hilda Hexenmeister to receive their prefect badges. Congratulations." Mortimer did not have quite as many strong opinions on this group as he'd had last year given that none of them were his grandchildren or their friends or enemies. He did have misgivings about Miss Jackson's ability to get along with the purebloods among the group, albeit not as many as he'd had-and still did-about Miss McLeod's, which included her fellow Teppenpaw prefects. Mortimer also had some doubts about Miss Hayles' mental stability but most of the other choices were worse. He didn't quite get the lack of enthusiasm for Mr. Crosby though. Yes, the Crotalus boy was reserved, but Mortimer thought that was a plus, a sign of maturity. Also, he wasn't violent or mentally unstable or both.

Once the new prefects and Head Students had returned to their tables, Mortimer continued, "Our Midsummer event this year will be the concert. We will be having a school-wide play with a folklore theme. Participation is optional." He had made sure of the latter. Some people were quieter and more introverted and neither wanted to be on stage or forced into interactions with peers. And some just plain didn't have talents or interests that translated to this sort of thing. Period.

He continued"In addition, Giselle Duell will be joining staff as our Divinations professor. Please treat her with respect." It made the most sense to tell them that rather than to tell them to treat her with the same respect they would show their other professors, given that some people did not show professors respect in general. Nor could Mortimer say that he trusted they would treat her with respect because that also was just plain not true. Still, they needed this reminder both based on the fact that respect did not come naturally to most children and the fact that Professor Duell was teaching a subject that was ninety-nine percent horse manure. "Meanwhile Professor Brooding-Hawthorne, our Defense Against the Dark Arts professor will be taking a sabbatical this fall, in order to further her research." Young people today! Mortimer could approve of both research and needing a break from the little monsters that inhabited Sonora but one needed to honor their commitments.

"Now we will sing the school song." Well, they would anyway. Mortimer did not sing . Lyric sheets were passed around and the song began.

Every day we strive
Learning to survive
Life’s hardships and to solve its mystery.
Learning to defend
Our honour and our friends,
Flying high to meet our destiny
We will stand and face those who want to harm us.
We won’t let the world transfigure, jinx or charm us
I won’t fight alone, as long as you are with me.
Sonora be my home, my tutor and my spirit
Vasita quoque floeat; Even the desert blooms.

That done, he dug into his steak and bourbon.

This was going to be fantastic!! Valentine could hardly sleep last night. Aunt Giselle was going to be teaching at school, she was going to see Bonabelle and Lavender and everyone again! There were going to be clubs and classes and her housemates again! More school! She was going to miss Mama and Papa again certainly, but she was going to see her friends again! She did hope everything was alright with Bonabelle. She had behaved a little strange after their tea party, and then she had to go home to finish school preparations. Tomorrow they would have their official 'morning after' feast breakfast and... well, hopefully things would be okay. If not, she'd have to figure out what she could do to help her friend.

She looked around the hall as the students were finding their tables and spotted Bonabelle. She waved and then gestured in a way that plainly meant 'Hi! Good to see you again! Enjoy the feast and I'll talk to you at breakfast tomorrow!" The headmaster hadn't started talking yet so she continued to scan the room, waves went out to Lavender, Alexander and Mab, Philippe, Sadie, Esme, Quincy, Wally and any one else whose eye she could catch before the Headmaster started his speech.

At which point she promptly sat down and paid attention. The new students were getting sorted! Two were sorted into Teppenpaw! She waved them over to her spot at the table ready to welcome them to the house! She didn't get much past a quick 'Hi' and 'Welcome to Teppenpaw!' before the headmaster was talking again. As the awards went out she cheered for Nathaniel and Caitlin. Nathaniel was a Teppenpaw, so that was fantastic and Caitlin seemed nice enough. She cheered again for the new prefects as well, a little more louder for Zara because, well... Teppenpaw.

As the Headmaster continued, she giggled at his announcement of the school's Midsummer event. Aunt Giselle had been right! She wondered if she was right about some of her other predictions.. Valentine looked about the room again, specifically paying attention to the boys. Did she really have admirers? Was Wally looking her way? Was Stanley? Was Philippe? What would she do if they were? She'd gotten the impression that Mama had thought it'd been cute, and Aunt Giselle had seen more than she was letting on...

Aunt Giselle! In all of her excitement she had nearly forgotten! Valentine spotted her Aunt sitting up at the head table next to Professor Brooding-Hawthorne.. only one of them? And let out a minor squeal of delight, completely missing whatever the Headmaster had just said. Oh, he'd been introducing Aunt Giselle, hooray! Aww, Professor Brooding-Hawthorne wasn't around this year? She supposed they would be seeing more of Professor Carter-Xavier... Ooo.. how was their baby doing? She was sure he was going to be as cute as anything!

Val sang along with the school song. She glanced again at Aunt Giselle, and thought her aunt looked a little uneasy? Hopefully she was okay, would she get a chance to talk to her yet tonight? She wasn't allowed to take Aunt Giselle's class for a whole year yet so she was going to have to find another time to talk with her. Stupid rules.

When the speech was over and the food appeared, she turned her attention back to the new Teppenpaws. "Hi!" she exclaimed more enthusiastically this time now that they were free to talk. "I'm Valentine Duell, and welcome to Teppenpaw!" She gestured at the laden table before them. "Eat, drink and be merry!" She began to load up her own plate, "I'm a second year now, so I was where you are now not long ago. Let me know if you have any questions." She put on her friendliest smile, "Oh, for official questions though," She began pointing out people as she mentioned their names, "Professor Xavier up there at the staff table is our Head of House, Nathaniel, Katerina, and now Zara are our Prefects. They can give you 'official' answers to questions, but I'll do my best and point you in the right direction if I need to." She just couldn't help but smiling, old friends and new friends... this was going to be a great year!

Tommy Jamison

Orientation was cool. There was something so interesting about seeing all the things he heard about and going Oh yeah, there it is! or So that’s what it looks like! It was both new and familiar all at once, and Tommy appreciated that he was probably one of few who were fortunate enough to experience the sensation.

Sophie said it used to be that they drank this Sorting potion, and he was glad that had changed somewhere along the line. Tommy had no fear of the potions ingredients or anything like that - quite the opposite, really, as he fancied himself something of a potioneer - but he didn’t really enjoy the idea of his skin turning funny colors. It was much less disconcerting to just watch his badge react to the potion instead. And speaking of, he took his turn bobbing his badge and held his breath while it changed color. Yellow! Teppenpaw it was! None of his friends were at that table, although he recognized a couple from extended family gatherings. His maybe-girlfriend Rosalynn headed off in a different direction, so that was a bit sad, but he figured they could catch up again later, so he took his place among his new Housemates without hesitation.

The names the Headmaster had to say didn’t really mean anything to him, but he thought the Miidsummer thing sounded pretty neat. Then there was singing, which was kinda weird, but whatever. He didn’t sing along since he didn’t know it, but he read along with the lyrics to try to get it in his brain.

When the food appeared, a girl next to him started eagerly telling him about the school. She asked if he had any questions, but Tommy felt bad and didn’t want to tell her that he probably knew everything he needed to know. There was basically no way to say he knew without coming off rude and pretentious, anyway. So he paused, trying to come up with a good question. “What’s your favorite class?” he asked genuinely. “And who’s the best professor? Also, hi, I'm Tommy Jamison!"

Valentine's smile dropped almost immediately into a look of mild consternation at the boy's first question. It was a perfectly reasonable question, it just drove home the unfairness of the universe. Her favorite class was undoubtedly going to be divinations. However, she wasn't allowed to take it yet. She had to wait an entire year before she could take Aunt Giselle's class! It just wasn't right. So she sighed and instead thought through the classes she had taken last year that she was going to keep taking this year. With no new additions.

It certainly wasn't transfigurations, that was for sure. Herbology wasn't bad either, "Potions!" She said suddenly with a smile. "It's great, my friend Bonabelle and I get to play 'mad scientist', it's fun!" It also didn't rely on her picturing things in her head, which was a real plus. Mama had also let her help with some of her potions at home, so she'd gotten some practice in before school as well. She wondered briefly if 'favorite class' usually aligned with 'best class' for most students. "What do you think yours will be?" She decided to ask in return.

"Professor Duell," She answered immediately in response to his question about best professor. "She just joined this year to teach Diviniations, and hasn't actually taught anything yet. But," she paused with a slight giggle, "She's my aunt so she wins by default." In order to answer his question as he had intended it though, she scanned the staff table. "Best is hard to qualify..." she stalled as she thought. "Professor Xavier is the nicest I think, but Professor Brooding-Hawthorne isn't far behind. I'm terrible at transfigurations and Professor Skies has helped work with me a lot to keep me up to speed. That's a really good thing for a professor. Professor Wright is very good as well, though I suspect he is a long-time Quidditch foe of my parents so..." She gave him playfully suspicious look and let the sentence hang.

"It's good to meet you Tommy," She had a suspicion about Tommy, he hadn't asked any of the really common questions. "Do you have friends or family here already?"

It took her a moment to come up with an answer, but when Valentine reported on her favorite class, Tommy immediately grinned. Playing mad scientist did sound like a great time, and wondered idly if Bonabelle and Valentine had been friends before Sonora, or if they had met upon arrival. Most people probably weren’t as lucky to come in with a pre-established group of relatives/friends like he was, but it gave him hope both for others and for himself to think that tight-knit friendships could be formed just within the first year. When she asked what he thought he’d like, he immediately offered an eager response. “Definitely Potions! My sister’s a potioneer and she lets me brew with her sometimes, so I think I’ve got a little head start,” he laughed.

He liked listening to her talk about the professors, because that was the topic he felt he knew the least about. It was, of course, super subjective, so that didn’t necessarily help, but Tommy would take all the opinions he could get. Having her aunt around sounded really fun and made him kinda wish that Sophie still taught here, although he imagined her kids would probably feel differently about having their mom around.

But then - uh oh! - he was caught. He hadn’t asked the right questions apparently. “Yeah, I do,” he confessed. “You were just so excited, I wanted to let you tell me all about it here!” Tommy laughed a little more, feeling a bit foolish now. “Theo Spurn is my godbrother, and Wally and Stanley O’Malley are technically my nephews.”

Ian Malone

October 26, 2020 12:52 PM
Ian was still unsure about this whole school thing. Even though he wanted to learn how to use magic and stuff that would help him become a Healer when he grew up, he didn't want to leave his mom and little sister. He'd miss his dad too, but not as much as his mom and Olivia. Ian had always been something of a mama's boy, fiercely devoted to and protective of her. And then Olivia was born and he felt that way about her as well.

And not only was Ian really missing them both horribly already but he was worried about what it would be like at school. Not so much the academic side, as he'd never really had much trouble with lessons growing up. However, with the social side of things...so much could go wrong. What if the other kids were mean to him? The first year didn't understand why people would want to be mean but he knew they could be and even if they weren't mean, that didn't mean they would want to be friends with him. What if Ian didn't fit in and was excluded?

Actually, come to think it, now he was starting to worry about the academics too. Obviously, he hadn't really practiced magic before as he was underage. So while he'd been good with reading and math and history and whatnot, what if Ian wasn't much of a wizard? That would be the worst! How would he become a Healer if he wasn't any good at magic? Logically, he had no reason for doubt but he was worried anyway.

Anyway, the orientation and tour had been really nice, though Ian was a bit afraid he was going to get lost when he tried to navigate Sonora on his own. Yeah, he was used to large buildings, but not this particular large building. Maybe he'd have to stick with someone else going the same way until he got used to things.

Now it was time for the Opening Feast and being Sorted. Ian was anxious about this too. He thought he might like to be in Teppenpaw, because Tepps were universally nice. It wouldn't be bad to be in Crotalus either, because that had been his mom's house. Aladren would be...okay, he'd at least be around people who would understand his desire to excel academically and probably liked to read like he did. However, Ian knew he didn't really want to be in Pecari even though Stanley was in that house and one of the few people he knew at all. He doubted he'd have much in common with most of those who were there. Ian wasn't adventurous and didn't like Quidditch much at all. He found dangerous things scary, not exciting.

He received the goblet and dipped in his badge. Ian breathed a sigh of relief as it turned yellow. Teppenpaw! Thank Merlin, he wouldn't have to worry about his roommate being mean. He took a seat near another new first year boy, who looked vaguely familiar and listened carefully to the rest of the Headmaster's speech.

Before Ian could work up the nerve to start a conversation with his new roommate-even though being in Teppenpaw made that a slightly less intimidating prospect, it didn't alleviate his fears entirely-a second year girl started to talk to them. Ian's roommate, who was apparently named Tommy Jamison, replied to her and Ian sat there, trying to figure out a way he could break into the conversation. The name Jamison sounded familiar to him. He thought that it might be the maiden name of his mom's cousin Ryan's wife Sophie. Was that why Tommy looked familiar?

Ian listened to them go back and forth, trying to come up with his own question to ask Valentine, when the second year asked Tommy if he had any relatives here. "You're Stanley and Wally's uncle?" He asked."I'm Ian Malone. I think we've met at their birthday parties. Ryan is my mom's cousin." Actually he thought Grandpa Charles and Ryan's biological mother were first cousins, but for reasons he didn't know, they didn't talk about Ryan's biological mother.

Valentine giggled at Tommy's confession. "I'm excited for you. It's silly of me to tell you things that you already know." She nodded along as he listed off his relatives, "I know them!" She responded then paused, "technically your nephews?" she asked curious. How was one 'technically' a nephew or uncle?

Theo, Wally and Stanley were all in her classes... although she realized Theo wasn't anymore. He was a third year now and was now in the intermediate classes. Just like Morgan, Mab and Alexander. They could all take Aunt Giselle's class, she still couldn't. She did her very best not to pout at the taunting, reoccurring thought. Instead she tried to focus on something more positive, like the other boy who had started talking!

Granted he was talking to Tommy, but that was fine. Apparently they were related. She'd heard stories from her parents about some of the big, extended families that came to Sonora. These two seemed to fit into that category. "That's neat!" She observed after Ian tried to figure out the family connection. She doubted either of them really needed her help, but she was always open to new friends!

She glanced around the room again, "How many people here do you think you are both related to?" She spotted Stanley and Wally, had they been looking this way? Probably making sure their 'technical' uncle was doing okay.

Tommy thought Valentine was cool and nice, and he was having a great time talking to her. He was just about to explain how he was “technically” an uncle (all he had meant by which was that it was a little unorthodox that his nephews were older than him, so they acted more like cousins), but then the other first year beside them said something, and -

Oh, sweet!

Truth be told, Tommy couldn’t keep track of all of Stanley and Wally’s relatives. Heck, they couldn’t keep track of all their relatives either! So while he kinda thought this other boy had looked a little familiar in passing, he absolutely had not made the connection. “Oh, yeah, yeah!” he grinned, more happy for the coincidence than in actual recognition. “That’s awesome! Now we get to be roommates!”

Valentine asked how many people in the room they might both be related to, and Tommy paused, scanning all the House tables. “Honestly, probably a bunch,” he said with a laugh. “Stanley and Wally have a huuuuuuuge family on their dad’s side. I’m on their mom’s side. She’s my sister,” he added for good measure. “What do you think, Ian?” Tommy added, turning back to his new roommate/extended relation through marriage. “Probably, like, a ton, right?”
