Jehan Callahan

November 24, 2018 4:42 AM
Jehan was in the library, which wasn't the most surprising fact known to man. Jehan liked books, and books were to be found in the library. Ergo, the library was not unknown territory to Jehan. What was, perhaps, more surprising, was that Jehan was in the library and he was on his own.

Normally, a Jehan in the library would also indicate the presence of, at the very least, Dorian too, if not various versions of (or, indeed, the entirety of) the Club of Tongues. The reason for today's deviance from the norm was simply one of convenience and distraction.

Jehan had been in the Aladren common room, reading, when he'd come across something he wanted further information on. Logically, he relocated to the library to find the relevant book that would broaden his knowledge on this particular subject. Having found a potential candidate, he looked through the first few pages to check the book was what he hoped for.

Fifteen minutes later, Jehan had absentmindedly found a chair to sit in, and was halfway through chapter four. His plans to return to the common room had been derailed.

The length of time for which the situation could have continued remained unspecified, however, as Jehan was brought back to the real world by a nearby noise. He wasn't quite sure what had happened - had someone spoken? Sat down? Had the books started flying out of the library? - and, as such (and still half in the world of his book), wasn't sure what the appropriate reaction was.

"Um, I'm sorry, what was that?" he asked, looking around for the person who had made the noise, and hoping he wasn't talking to an inanimate object.

Thwack

“Ow.”

When Vlad had offered to return Ivy's library book for her, dropping it on his foot had not been part of the plan. But here he was, its dusty jacket masking the throbbing mass connected to his ankle.

He heard a voice and turned to it. “Oh, nothing,” he answered with sheepish embarrassment. “I just dropped- oh, hi, Jehan!” Vlad interrupted himself upon recognizing his friend. “Didn't see you behind that book for a second!”

"Hi, Vlad!" replied Jehan, happy to see his friend but concerned about the noise, which he now realised must have been connected to the offending book. "Have you hurt yourself? I guess the library can be a dangerous place." He grinned at that, internally appreciating the different meanings one could ascribe to that phrase.

Vlad laughed. "Nah, I'm fine," he said despite the slight pain; he was certain the stinging in his toes would fade any minute now. "Sorry about the noise, anyway." A library was hardly the place for being noisy. "What are you reading?"

Jehan frowned slightly but decided to accept Vlad's response. He supposed a book couldn't do too much damage. Unless it hit your head, which could have all manner of interesting side effects. He didn't think the book had hit Vlad's head though, so it was probably okay.

"I'm reading about dragons. Did you know that antipodean opaleyes don't have pupils? I don't know how they see without them."

"What are you up to then, crashing about in the library?"
