OOC: This continues my subthread of the gaming club thread, which can be found here. BIC:

Doombot was not present. That was disappointing, but probably wise on the kobald's part. Phil looked through his dice, trying to decide which would roll well for a thievery check. He decided on the red one, since he was going for his ignitor, and it seemed to like skill checks a little better than his one with the gears inside it. (That was the other reason he'd decided on a goblin inventor - he'd gotten an awesome thematic set of dice over the summer and had wanted a character who fit them.)

Once Fortune was settled safely between him and the door, Phil started shaking the red d20 in his hand. "Okay, Doombringer tries to palm his ignitor." He rolled, and held his breath as it passed over the one, but it kept rolling and . . . "Whoo! Sixteen! So a total of nineteen!" He was trained, but he didn't have much Dex to back up a thievery check so that had been a little risky, but Tunk had pulled it off! It was only a point off of a critical success even!

"So I got the ignitor, and now I flick it on and try to burn off my ropes. What kind of roll is that?"

Philippe tried to hold a mildly annoyed and exasperated expression as Doombringer asked what he needed to roll now that he had his lighter in hand. "Durra just sighs as the goblin tries to set himself on fire again."

Valentine waved her hand a bit dismissively towards Phil. "You don't need a roll now that you've got it on hand. Doombringer's fire resistance is good enough to prevent you from hurting yourself. The thing you will need is a little time."

She looked around at the group, "One of the door guards casually glances in, but doesn't appear to see anything out of the ordinary with John in the way, and his focus is soon pulled back to the main room. Is anyone else doing anything? In general it is a DC20 check to escape from your bonds with Acrobatics or Athletics." Then with a small smirk she added, "Ine of those checks is quieter than the other. Oh, also everyone give me a Perception check, DC 20 for the moment."

Val rolled for the guards one rolled a natural 1 and remained quite entranced with whatever was happening in the main room. The other however, rolled a natural 20. She blinked at the die for a moment pondering it evening out it's own average so well. "The guard who had just looked into the room turns back to look again. His nostrils are flaring as if he's caught some scent... perhaps the scent of burning goblin." Which is what anyone else would begin to smell as well, if they succeeded on their own perception check.

Already having the red die in hand, Phil rolled his perception check and got a nine on the die, and an eleven in total. Wisdom… was not what anybody should be turning to Doombringer for. “Not a twenty,” he announced, but at least he didn’t need to declare a critical failure this time. He’d beaten that by one.

He commented when Val announced the results of her own rolling. “If that’s what we were rolling to smell, too, yeah, Doombringer definitely doesn’t notice something so commonplace and not worth mentioning, especially if the fire resistance is enough for him to not even feel it.”

Philippe picked up one of his d20s at random when Val told everyone to roll perception. As a cleric, he was trained in it, and wisdom was one of Durra’s best attributes, but even with his strong bonus, it wasn’t enough to overcome the die roll. He just shook his head to show he hadn’t hit the DC of twenty.

“Durra’s waiting until the guard isn’t paying them so much attention to try to bust out with athletics.”

Since he was directly between the guard looking in the door and the escaping goblin, Fortune decided that John wasn't going to do anything other than look as helpless and innocent as possible. He did roll his perception check as requested and wondered why his dice hadn't worked so well last time they'd played. I rolled a 19 for a 22 total on perception.

John's nose winced as the scent of burning goblin wafted into his nose. That's what had attracted the guard's attention. Was there anything they could do about it? He looked around at the other players questioningly. "If that smell gets worse, he might investigate more, is there anything we can do?"

Xarryn Bavol

January 27, 2023 7:48 PM
It was Xarryn's second year playing with the gaming club. Well, it had taken a little while into last year to discover it, but when he had found out they had adventures, nothing could have kept him out of the library! (Which was a very strange thing for Xarryn, because he normally hated the library.)

Last year, he'd tried a swashbuckling human, but it had been a little too complicated for him, so this time he'd decided to go for a ruffian rogue. Still a sailor, because that's what Xarryn himself was, and he'd enjoyed dropping in sailor knowledge into the game, but he'd also decided to try a dwarf this time. So he was short and sturdy and strong.

And when he rolled his perception check when Val prompted them to do so, he was apparently also lacking all external senses. "Natural one," he groaned out loud. He was supposed to actually be pretty good at perception, rogues being experts in it, but not when he rolled like that.

"I haven't noticed the guard or the Doommaster doing anything, so I'm just gonna try to tear these ropes right off me. Athletics?" Upon receiving confirmation, he picked up his die and shook it nervously, "C'mon, not a one this time." He rolled. "Yes!" he exclaimed, in a voice definitely not as quiet as the library preferred. "Nineteen! Plus seven . . ." his math skills were much better than his reading skills, but it still took a moment, "that's a twenty-six!"

Nirro did not appreciate being tied up. His special abilities were all around investigating subtle clues and working out where to stab people for maximum damage. It was already very obvious what was happening right now and even his trusty 'that's odd' had not revealed anything much about the room they were being kept in. His main choice was whether he would prefer looking for sneaky ways out of stabbing kobolds with maximum efficiency once he got untied - but the 'once untied' was a rather large part of that equation.

He rolled a five when Val called perception checks. Even with his plus seven, he doubted that was good enough.

"Apparently, I have a cold," he said, eyeing the d20 suspiciously. "And I want to attempt acrobatics to get out of my bonds." Val had mentioned that one way was more subtle than the other. Usually, whatever Bertie had and Durra didn't was the more subtle, but he wasn't sure in this case - athletics sounded forceful, which could be attention-grabbing, but acrobatics sounded more movement-y.

He picked up the d20 giving it a stern look, and rolled a nine.

"Total of fourteen," he said.

Well, this was getting interesting. "Dolgum, you have little trouble breaking free of the ropes that have been binding you. It is not a subtle maneuver, and the guard that was looking in most definitely notices you breaking free. However as that is a single action, you arguably get two more before he can react." She wasn't quite sure where this would go, but it'd probably get interesting. "You can move your speed for an action, you can try to free others as an action or you could attempt to attack the kobold as an action, or something else you may think of."

"It rather damp and musty down here," Val commented to Bertie. "Nirro isn't quite able to slip free from his bonds, but it wasn't a critical failure so can keep trying, it looks like the guards have something else to look at."

Fortune didn't really like the sound of how this was going. Dolgom was making some noise and drawing the kobold's attention. He really didn't think John was in a great place anymore. "John doesn't like this situation anymore and is going to try and escape with..." He glanced over his character's sheet Acrobatics was +6, Atheletics was +0 so yeah, that was an obvious choice. "Acrobatics." He rolled the dice that had been so good to him so far... and got a natural one. He looked up at Val, "A one on the die isn't good, right?"

"Right. Good. So, they obviously took my shortsword, shortbow, and my staff, as they're big, and my clan dagger, which is shiny and always worn on display - and I'm really mad about that by the way, that's nearly as bad as taking my beard!" Xarryn was delighted to be able to have a beard in this game! "But after taking all of that, I'm guessing they didn't find the dagger or the dart I had hidden?" he checked.

Val just shook her head at Fortune, "It is not good. Your attempts at escape twist the bindings around so that you can barely move your hands around. You won't be able to try that again now."

Then she turned to Xarryn, "Nope, they seemed satisfied with your obvious weapons that they didn't search to much farther. You hidden dagger is still where you put it."

"Great!" Xarryn enthused. "So my second action is drawing my concealed dagger, and my third is slicing the nearest person free." So far they knew John was near the door and Doombringer was behind him. Xarryn's Dolgum was probably farther back. He looked to his side and saw he was sitting next to Gwendolyn. "I guess that's you? So you're free!" He grinned at her, but then the smile faltered and he glanced over at Val again, "Unless I need to roll for that?"

He could roll again. There were worse outcomes. Bertie tried very hard to banish the thought of those, and gave the d20 a very firm look, and did as Val instructed. Thirteen. Unlucky for some, but it was a step in the right direction, and he wasn't superstitious (apart from the need to glare at dice, which was just part of gaming).

"Total of eighteen," he reported. "So... I am still tied up," he concluded. He didn't dare voice the possibility that he could just keep trying, as the circumstances around him seemed to be shifting somewhat.

So close, maybe she could... nope. She'd already told them what the DC was, and she'd done that on purpose so she could go getting soft on them as she had noticed she tended to do from time to time. Instead she grimaced. "So close... Nirro almost thought he had it while Dolgum fished out his hidden dagger, he can keep trying unless he critically fails..." she shot a quick glance over at Fortune. Poor John. "Although after this next action when Dolgum gets Inva free, that Kobold will have a chance to finally react." She looked around at the other players. "Anyone else trying anything at this point, subtly may be out the window."

Philippe followed along as their youngest (but not newest) player broke free and Bertie struggled to do the same. "Okay, since Dolgum isn't being remotely subtle, Durra's not going to just sit around anymore waiting for the opportune moment. Can I try to break free, too, or are we going into initiative now?"

Without thinking to much Fortune picked up his d20 and tossed it on the table. It landed on a 14. "If I can't get free, and can do an action or two, I want to try and move away from the path between them and the people breaking free. I got a 20 total on acrobatics to move or roll away or whatever it takes."

"Okay. First try to break free with athletics." He picked up the rainbow die that Freddie had given him for Christmas one year. "That's a twelve. Athletics is plus six, so that's an eighteen. She feels the ropes strain, but they don't give. Second action, she tries again." He rolled again. Eight on the die. He grimaced. "Nope. Wrong direction. That's a fourteen total. Durra's still stuck."

It was probably a bad idea to keep rolling the same, stubborn die. It was NOT far more likely to screw him over, mathematically speaking though, and Bertie clung to that rationality. Also, everything was about to go sideways anyway.

"Back to nine," he reported, he reported with a roll of his eyes. As soon as they were in combat mode, he suspected he'd be using his considerable brains to work out how to fight whilst still tied up.

This was not exactly how Val had planned for things to go. Naturally by now, she should have known better, but still... this is the way things went. So much for a sneaky type adventure, now things would get interesting. "Okay, at this point Dolgum is free with a knife, Inva is free and Doombringer is free and also slightly charred. Durra and Nirro are both still bound, but can continue to try and escape their bonds. And John has rolled himself out of the middle of the floor and will definitely need help in breaking free."

She thought for just a moment, and rolled a d20. It came up as a 13. That was fine it confirmed what she had been thinking with her gut. "The kobold is starting to open his mouth and turn to his companion in the doorway, who is still completely absorbed with whatever is going on in that main room. Who is doing something?" This was something she had done from time to time, not everyone liked it, but it kept the players from sitting and staring at their sheets for to long in a critical situation when one would not have time to think and plan perfectly. Whoever told her what their character was doing first, went first. It was a tense situation and needed a tense mechanic. Their foes would react in time with what her die had directed.

Xarryn rolled his die again. "Yes! That's a eighteen plus . . . um." He looked at his sheet but he'd only filled out dagger under melee, and noted under traits that it was thrown 10ft. He had dart filled out under ranged, with a plus 4 but that was a lot less than the plus seven he had for a melee attack. "Range is dex not strength, even for thrown weapons, right?" he asked, pretty sure he already knew this answer after playing for most of a year.

"Twenty-two," he gave his total, which was still plenty good enough to hit, he had the DC on the die roll by itself, but it wasn't going to crit that way. He picked up his damage dice. A d4 and a d6 for sneak. "Oh, yeah!" A three on the d4 and 6 on the d6: that was near perfect! And with his strength bonus of plus four, which he had on the dart, so he should have on the dagger, too, that was, "Thirteen piercing, with sneak attack!" His enthusiasm dimmed slightly, and he asked belatedly, "Er, is he flat-footed?"

Val nodded along with Xarryn's activities in assaulting the poor kobold guard, up until he mentioned sneak attack damage. She started looking at the notes she had available and came up with an unfavorable result for Xarryn. "Sorry, but he isn't. Your Surprise Attack depends on you attacking with either stealth or deception, and I don't think this attack qualifies. If it had been a critical hit, your racket would have made him flat-footed, but you weren't quite there." She shrugged, "So you just do the seven points of damage as your dagger buries itself into the creature's chest... mere inches away from its heart. It staggers a step into the room and looks as though it may fall over. Anyone else?" The time was ticking until the kobold was going to do something, although she may add a few moments before it recovered, getting dropped with a knife from full health to one hit point remaining was a traumatic thing to happen.
