Nathan

September 29, 2017 11:17 PM
Nathan sat in the staff lounge as he did his grading for the intermediate level Savanna unit test. He frowned as he reached the end of the current paper and tallied up the final grade. He sighed. He wanted it to be higher, but it just couldn't be nudged up given the answers provided. With another heavy sigh, he asked another occupant of the room. "How do you help a student who is legitimately struggling with the material? I've tried office hours. She goes to the academic support. She's just not getting it."

Cleo

As Cleo didn't have a solid friendship group yet, she tended to just take an empty seat at the Crotalus table each mealtime. Sometimes that was fine, she didn't need to be around people all the time, and meal times could be good down time. Today though, she felt like chatting. She glanced around the whole hall, looking for an empty seat next to another solo diner. Anyone except Jen would do. Spotting such a place, she made her way over.

"Mind if I join you?" she smiled.

Gray

September 30, 2017 12:37 AM

Gray was squinting at some tiny handwriting, trying to ignore the almost physical urge to toss away his work and write, when he detected a sigh from another occupant. He looked up to see who else wished to melodramatically despair over their task and found himself being asked for advice.

“That...that sounds pretty bad,” admitted Gray. “I don't know - have you tried peer tutoring? Or looking into, y'know, all these journals in here.” He waved vaguely toward various education magazines. “See if there's any new strategies that might work for her type - I was always big on analogies to make stuff make sense.”

Ingrid

A Keeper. That was all they needed. Well, technically Parker or Tatiana was willing to play Keeper, but Ingrid thought her chances of persuading someone reluctant were higher for that position that for Chaser. Whilst a good Keeper was a valuable asset, at this point they just needed a warm body willing to occupy the position in order to field a team.

As the Pecaris came into the common room for the evening, she waited by the entrance, pouncing on each and every one with the words...

"Hi there. You know, the Quidditch team's still looking for a Keeper."

Georgia

September 30, 2017 1:52 AM
Georgia was making notes in class, when something on her hand caught her attention. She paused in her writing, tilting her hand in the light. Yes, there it was. A speck of glitter. Strange... She couldn't remember the last time she'd been around any glitter.

Once the Professor had finished talking, she turned to the person next to her.

"I'm slightly sparkly," she informed them, tilting her hand back and forth in the sunlight so they could see. "And I have no idea how it happened."

OOC - this is a reference to Dorian's exploding glitter birthday card and the fact that, given the nature of glitter, everyone else will probably be finding it all over themselves for the rest of the term.

Parker

September 30, 2017 7:58 AM
Parker knew he needed more practice flying if he was going to be a valuable member of the team. So he took his broom and walked to the Quidditch Pitch.

He had hoped there wouldn't be anyone there incase he had problems again, but as he walked out to the field he saw someone.
He called out: "Is it ok if I practice flying?"

Parker

September 30, 2017 8:06 AM
Parker choked on his food when Cleo came up behind him. Not only was he eating fast as he wanted to explore the garden a bit, but her smile still made him feel a bit warm.

After fully swallowing his bite he slid down the bench.

"Not at all partner." He was about to stuff hus face full of more food when he had a thought.

"Do you know any secret or surprising places in the Labrynth? Was going to a bit of exploring after dinner."

Cleo

"Thanks," Cleo smiled, taking a seat next to Parker. She was pleased to see there was spaghetti bolognaise for dinner. She helped herself, and began cutting the long pasta up into easily manageable pieces, never having learnt the more classy eating rules of twirling it around one's fork.

"Hmmm," she pondered his question. "There's a wishing well... And an actual desert-like section. Do those count as secret or surprising? I guess I don't do a lot of exploring... Mostly, I just spend my time in the vegetable patch. I guess that's why I didn't end up in Pecari," she added, almost apologetically.

Juniper

September 30, 2017 11:57 AM
Juniper bent over, writing notes intently and trying hard not to think about the pairs of eyes that were all about the room. Suddenly her roommate spoke to her and she jumped, spilling ink all over her paper and down on to her robe. Her face burned in humiliation.

Bur she couldn't be rude to Georgia. Especially since they had a few years left of sharing a room. It wasn't the other girl's fault that Juniper was clumsy and skittish as a newborn foal. "That's strange. I'm, um, inky."

Parker watched her cut the spaghetti. He'd never seen anyone do that before and was surprised as it made more sense then twirling it on a fork.

His eyes went big at the mention of a wishing well. He'd never seen one before, magical or not. He was about to say something right over Cleo but kept his mouth shut.

"No. You do explore, just in a different way," Parker began. She seemed almost sad she didn't explore, which was silly as she explored something else. " I run around and get hurt. But! You find out what makes things grow the best. What vegetables work what don't. That's a form of exploring too. As my dad says: Exploring is just about finding out what's going on around you. Tonight we'll try my version, tomorrow or the next day we can do something you might think is exploring. Ohhh fun name: The garden explorers!" Parker sat back pleased with the fun named and imagined a comic with that name. Then he rememmbered what he was going to say before.
"Also...did you mention a wishing well? Does it actually grant wishes?"

Amelia Layne

September 30, 2017 8:38 PM
Amelia's pessimism about the Quidditch season had proven depressingly accurate, but she kept practicing anyway. For one thing, she still had a good few years at Sonora to go, and for another, combined teams were a possibility.

She was practicing diving to this end when she heard someone call out to her. She pulled herself, fairly smoothly, out of her five and flew over to a more comfortable viewing and speaking distance of the Pecari she didn't know.

“Of course,” said Amelia. “I don't think the Pitch has my name on it. You just here to fly or you want to throw a Quaffle around?” If there were combined teams, it wouldn't be bad to have brushed up on her Chaser skills, too.

Parker watched the woman fly down to him. She was super graceful in her decent and that made Parker extremely self conscious of his own ability.

Parker thought about her question for a second. He might as well get flying practice in with throwing the Quaffle. It would help with flying one handed.
"Let's throw the Quaffle around. I must warn you though, still getting used to broom riding," he said holding out his hand and thinking up while imagining holding out an apple.

He opened his eyes again, excited that the broom was actually up.

"Where's the Quaffle?" Parker asked before getting onto his now levitating broom.

Amelia smiled kindly at the warning, though the object of her amusement didn't see it with his eyes closed over his broom.

“Should be one in the equipment shed,” said Amelia, pointing. “I'll go check it out.”

She returned a moment later with a Quaffle, red and easily gripped by virtue of the charms on it. “I'm Amelia, by the way,” she said. “Third year, Aladren. I'm pretty sure you're new around here?”

Mortimer

September 30, 2017 10:41 PM
Mortimer scowled. Okay, he was usually scowling but this was a deeper scowl. There were lots of occasions that caused him to scowl more deeply than usual such as having to go to parties and make small talk with people. Or deal with students.

This was a deeper scowl that that even. This was the sort of scowl that probably broke records.

Lately,he'd been noticing something dastardly about. Something that ranked up there with the Satori and being cooped up with his employees for months.

Glitter! Glitter was the worst substance ever invented! And he'd been noticing it everywhere . Mortimer was trying his best to get rid of this scourge but it was starting to seem an impossible task.

And now it was on his shoe . Someone was going to pay as it had to be a student prank. Someone was going to be.....well,actually the punishment he felt most just was actually one that made the most obvious sense, to clean up their mess. It was also the cruelest since glitter was so bloody difficult to get rid of.

Parker was thankful for her going to get the Quaffle as he'd likely be stuck in the shed for a few minutes if not longer. He took the time to do a few quick stretches and get on his broom.

"I'm Parker umm Pecari first year. So ya, fairly new," Parker responded. He didn't want to alert her to the fact that he was also new to the whole wizarding world.
"So just a few flying lessons. Thus the warning."

He started flying a little forward then turned around in a wide u turn to get back to her.

"You on the Aladren team right? Does that make us competitors?"

"Your dad sounds nice," she smiled, when Parker explained the idea of exploring in different ways.

"That sounds like a lot of fun," she agreed, when he proposed being 'The Garden Explorers' together, and trying different things.

"I don't think so... I mean, not everything. If everyone could just wish to pass their exams, then there wouldn't be much point in school... But maybe some things it does? And sometimes things happen in a roundabout kind of way... Like, let's say you wished to make more friends, then had an idea to set up a club or something... It might not always be possible to tell directly if it came from wishing, or just good timing or a bunch of other stuff."

Georgia

October 01, 2017 7:50 AM
Maybe it was her magic, physically showing through. That was probably dumb though. And she'd never noticed any of the seventh years sparkling, or the staff. It was probably just some random glitter.

She hadn't noticed that she was the direct cause of Juniper's spilt ink, which would have made her feel bad.

"Oh," she commiserated. "That's much less cheery. At least it's quick to clean though," she smiled. It was times like this that she loved being a witch. Without magic, this would have involved going back upstairs for fresh clothes, and laundry from hell. This would be cured with a simple wave or two of a wand. "You... need a hand?" she asked, trying to sound upbeat and like it wasn't a big deal. She knew Juniper could get kind of flappy when there was pressure, but Georgia didn't want her to think that she thought she wasn't a good witch or something. "Just... there's quite a lot," she added.

Amelia shrugged when Parker asked if they were competitors. “On game day, sure,” said Amelia. “But today, I won't tell your captain if you don't tell mine, how's that sound?”

In this spirit of cooperation, she waited until Parker looked more or less steady on his broom before saying “Ready? Catch!” and gently tossing the Quaffle toward him.

Parkersmiled at the comment about his father. He had been so busy trying to learn everything that he hadn't thought about his family in a while. He felt a little guilty about that and vowed he'd write them a letter soon.

Cleo had a point about wishing in the wishing well.

"Sounds like you know this from experience. What did you put in the well? Or are you supposed to drink from it? Ohhh maybe you can water something in the vegetables and then you can have a wishing soup or salad."

Parker realized he'd gone off a bit.
"Sorry. We should go see the wishing well. Then explore around it."

Parker cocked his head to the side and looked at Amelia. "Sounds fair to me."

Parker steadied himself and got himself ready to catch. He remembered the tryouts and the throwing of the ball so he knew it was easy to catch. Easier than it looked.

So as he reached for the ball he knew he shouldn't over compensate too much, but he did and rocked back a bit on the broom.

As he steadied himself he turned to Amelia, "like I said, still getting used to this." He tossed it back, trying to do it softly like she did to him.

"What's a practice players do with the Quaffle?"

He caught the Quaffle, which was good. It wasn't a great catch, but it was a catch and a better start than some made. Amelia clapped lightly in approval.

“Good job,” she said.

Parker tossed it back, and Amelia reached out to catch it as she thought. “I haven't done any in a while, either - I'm usually on Seeker - but it's a little fancier.” She tossed the Quaffle back to Parker. “Let's try this. You go up higher, if you can, and toss it down to me. Then we'll flip that around. Sound good?”

Juniper nodded. "Thank you, I'd really appreciate that." She smiled shyly at Georgia. It was nice of her to offer to help. "Let's get to it." She didn't want anyone else to notice though it was probably too late for that. Still she didn't want the Ariannas or Finn to see her being a mess. The latter wouldn't judge her but when it came to her best friend...well, she wanted to look nice for him. Even if she was just wearing her school robes.

Seeker being fancier? More difficult for sure. Parker caught the Quaffle, moving his broom a bit to make sure he caught it solidly in his center, like they taught him in PeeWee football.

"Go up and throw down. Got it...I think," said Parker as he turned upwards at a rate faster than he anticipated. He was able to stop and then looked down. He wasn't more than 10 ft above but it felt higher. Parker more dropped the ball than threw it really.

"Ok. This is what I'm still working on," he shouted down. Preparing for the sharp impact of the ground if he fell. He took a deep breath and followed the movement s he had copied before during tryouts. He was now glad there was someone else there incase he crashed to the ground.

"Well," he said when he was closer to the ground, "that was better than last time."
