One of the things, Gray thought, which made him manifestly unsuited to his current job was something he could not help. Learning to see inter-House cooperation as in a way better than the usual House competitions was something that could be learned (he had spent a month before starting here last year inhaling books on current philosophies of education, adjusting his instinctive views where it made sense or where he gathered there was no point in not doing so), but learning not to think that ‘Pecalus’ sounded like some kind of disease one would contract while dragon keeping or that ‘Teppadren’ sounded like the medication for it was probably a task he was doomed to fail at. The wordplay amused him, of course, but he still wished he had thought of it when he was working in serials...He’d had a character who ran a pharmaceutical company, among other things, and who had not been entirely heroic. That could have made a whole episode, or if he’d been really invested and Management cooperative, a storyline. I - er, when - he got back to his proper field, he was going to have to remember to look around his life for things like that more often.

For now, however, there was a Quidditch game, and he needed to referee it. This meant not thinking about what he’d rather be writing and focusing on the actual Pecali and Teppadrens.

“Welcome, everyone, to this year’s first Quidditch match!” he announced, his voice ringing in his ears with the Sonorus charm. It was cloudy and a bit cool, but not raining and only a bit breezy, so he didn’t expect conditions were bad enough to make anyone in the game or the stands laugh hysterically at the idea that they were well come to this match. “Pecari and Crotalus have united to take on Aladren and Teppenpaw, and may the best pair win.” In his day, he suspected he would have considered Teppadren doomed, but they had the Killer Teppenpaws both on the field and Parker Fitzgerald had an...interesting...relationship with brooms and the Houses just weren’t what he remembered them as in general, so really, anything could happen. He released the Snitch and added to the players, “Play fair and have fun,” before tossing the Quaffle into the air to begin the game.

Though Pecari wasn’t a full team, they weren’t as short as the other houses and for that she was proud. It was only fair to combine where they could, but she still had her position as Seeker. When she’d heard they would be combining teams this year, there had been a momentary inkling of worry.

Hierarchy and age, as she’d come to realise, played a very important part in assigning positions in Quidditch. It wasn’t necessarily about ability, really, but about keeping everyone as happy as possible. As captain, Lily wasn’t certain she would be happy to take that approach – after all, it only made sense that the best person ought to play regardless of how young or old they were. Still, Lily was surprised and pleased that Alistair Johnson hadn’t been assigned as Seeker. It seemed, at least this year, that she was the anomaly and she took the honour very seriously.

Lily hadn’t admitted it before, but she was proud that her brother was captain this year. With the fiasco that had happened the year prior that led to the confusion on who would take Umland’s place, it only seemed right for Jack to take it on. She did, of course, have her own bias so she kept her comments to a minimum.

Lily was rather disappointed that Pecari and Teppenpaw hadn’t combined their teams like the last season this had happened. She didn’t particularly enjoy being on the receiving end of Jozua’s bludgers, but she supposed it couldn’t be helped. They had a game to play and she would do it to the best of her ability.

Once the teams were situated on the pitch, she gripped her broom, feeling excited. There weren’t just two, but four houses represented on the pitch and in the stands. She could feel the adrenaline already pumping in her veins as the referee made his familiar opening statement and the captains gave their short monologue. The noise around them, knowing that all eyes in the stands were on them, made Lily smile. She was determined, this year, to bask in the glory of catching the Snitch. She was no Alistair Johnson – she would be Lily Olivia Spencer, Seeker extraordinaire.

The quaffle was tossed and Lily shot up into the air along with the rest of her team, eyes peeled for the Snitch. It had been a few weeks since she'd ridden a broom last, so her ascent was a bit wobbly. Once she was comfortably seated and higher up, she flew with more ease, glad she didn't have to chase after the quaffle with mostly everyone else. She moved casually around the air, above the bedlam of players, trusting that the Beater protecting her would do their job. She could just hear it now, the crowd shouting her name, Jozua grinning at her proudly, Jack looking gloomy in defeat, her team-mates hauling her up and chanting her name…

Yes, she most certainly could not lose today.

This was weird. And a little frustrating. They were only one player short. It was so close, but they still had to join forces and have a mixed team. Although, on the plus side, the Crotali players all came from strong family backgrounds, which meant they were good flyers and good players. Parker was trying really hard, and he was definitely improving, but it was always a challenge with people who didn’t know how to fly, and it was hard to imagine someone like Parker being able to integrate fully into the wizarding world. How could he - how could any of his type of people - when they came to school knowing nothing? She’d felt a bit embarrassed the first time they’d had joint training, and all those boys from good families had seen what her team was dealing with. At least Sammy was captain for this year. She was the one who had to deal with explaining Parker, and standing up for him and his place on the team to the Crotalus players. And it made sense for someone like Sammy to be doing that. Hopefully next year they’d have a full Pecari team and she wouldn’t have to negotiate those kinds of issues.

The weather, at least, seemed to be on their side. No glare from the sun to throw them off, a comfortable temperature to exercise in, and the wind didn’t seem strong enough to be a major factor. She listened to the captains’ speeches, watched them shake hands and readied herself for take off. She gave a good solid kick to the ground beneath her, easily snatching the Quaffle.

She turned, hoping to get a good amount of distance covered whilst everyone else untangled themselves, and before the Beaters really got a handle on the Bludgers. The opening seconds of a match were often a blur of confusion (one she’d advised Parker to stay well out of) which could be an advantage or a disadvantage, depending on what happened to you.

As she flew, she kept an eye open for either of the boys, clad in dark reddish-brown robes that were an attempt at a compromise between the two house colours. They mixed much less easily than Teppadren’s, with Pecari’s brown tending to just make everything… more brown, but the only other non-partisan colour was to use the purple from last year’s scrimmage teams, and that hadn’t been very popular with some of the boys. And besides, it would be needed if there was ever a Crotadren, or Aladrus, or whatever they’d call themselves team...Aladrus sounded mildly better, she thought. Any avoidance of the syllable ‘Crot’ usually benefitted a portmanteau.

Seeing one of her teammates, she got in close, so that she could throw the ball more gently and have it still reach its target. Simon could probably handle things either way, but she wanted to keep passes simpler for Parker if she could. Hoping they kept possession, she threw towards her team-mate.

OOC - as Simon's author said he would not have been keen on purple, it was agreed that it wasn’t god-modding to include that fact in Ing’s post.

Purple was not, Simon supposed, the worst color in the world. Lots of people in the world had worn it and a good few of them had been far, far more important wizards than he. The sad fact was, however, that the past century had happened, and in the course of it, it had become less and less socially acceptable for males to wear that particular color. When the question of how to address Crotalus’ unfortunate union with Pecari had come up, he had been forced to weigh in on the side of those who favored a sort of reddish-brown he suspected was closer to the Teppenpaw’s secondary color of maroon than anything neutral but which was still at least not inherently something that might make him the target of Remarks if this did not go well for ‘his’ team.

‘His.’ He could not really think of it as such, of course, because it wasn’t – it was Miss Meeks’ team with a few Crotali reluctantly appended to it. There was, he thought, no real rhyme or reason, either, to which ones of them had been tacked on where – it was true that he could barely understand a word Miss Vorontsov said, both because she spoke with a heavy, unpleasant-sounding accent and because her grammar was bizarre, but he still would have picked her over her year-fellow, who was some Muggleborn, and while he wouldn’t do so if he was himself for obvious reasons, if he had been Miss Meeks, Simon thought he would have chosen Winston over himself for the Chaser Spot Simon currently occupied. But yet, here they were, a hodgepodge team with a Muggleborn captain, listening to their Charms teacher his father said used to be a writer of some kind try to introduce the game.

The world was a very strange place.

The Quidditch Pitch, however, wasn’t, not really, at least not once they were in the air. Simon took to the skies with a feeling of relief, leaving the politics of the game behind him for the simplicity of trying to catch one ball while avoiding another, and also, to the maximum extent possible, other people.

Total avoidance, however, was not possible, and he was thus mostly relieved to see that the right side had started off with the Quaffle. Making and receiving passes was difficult, but not as much as stealing from the other team. He flew after Ingrid Wolseithcrafte (which felt strange; she was supposed to be the enemy!) and was there when she passed the ball to him.

I have it. I have the Quaffle. I got a spot here even though Winston and Miss Vorontsov were – I assume in her case – both options.

…I can do this.

He covered ground quickly, his heart hovering near his throat as he tried to use his peripheral vision to maximum effect to allow himself to a) avoid straight trajectories that might draw Bludgers to him and b) not crash into other people while attempting to avoid Bludgers. When he saw what looked like a solid opportunity to pass to the reddish-brown robe near him, he imitated Ingrid’s gentler pass in case it was Mr. Fitzgerald, but also imitated her in not looking too closely – that would slow him down. He let the Quaffle go and then dropped lower in the air, hoping to get in place to set up a play for later, or maybe sooner if someone intercepted the Quaffle.

Parker Fitzgerald, Pecalus Chaser

October 12, 2017 7:22 AM
Parker took five deep breaths, just like his mother had taught him on his first day of school. He'd had so much energy that day it felt like it was literally spilling out onto the ground around him. So his mom taught him the five breaths. One, focus on breathing. Two, notice you're breathing. Three, notice your legs. Four, notice your chest. Five, notice your head. Now use your head.

And it wasn't surprising that Parker had this much energy. He'd been chosen to be on the team when they combined house teams. There had been some sort of hierarchy that he hadn't fully grasped as to who got what position, but he had gotten one and he had put his heart into preparation. He had focused a lot in flying class and in team practice. He'd found he could mimic other players well enough and that had come as a positive surprise. He'd also kept doing self practice on his own on the pitch making sure he could fly well without going outside the bounds.

With all of that, the gardening club he'd joined, and his studies which he did try doing, he had found little time for anything. So the energy of coming to the anticipated climax of his efforts and simply being one of the few first years on the field and if he did well maybe people wouldn't be so persnikity about him being Muggle born meant he needed to breath.

As he stepped out onto the field in the colors that had seemed serious business for some reason, he tried to focus on what he had been told before. First at practice, then in the secret practice he had had with Amelia that he hadn't mentioned to the team because she was on the other side, and then what he could pick up from watching others play. He had even picked up a few books to make sure he understood the rules, thoufh that only helped in confusing him with 700 possible fouls.

What do you need to do?

First, get in the air as fast as possible. Get out of the crazy that will ensue.

Second, help get the Quaffle down the field without getting it intercepted.

Three, unless no one else is close or you think you can really make the shot pass the Quaffle to another Chaser.

Four, don't get hit too badly by another player.

The third rule was in part as respect to the older players and in part because Parker was worried about committing a foul and messing everything up.

As the game started Parker got up in the air as quickly as possible. Not looking down but towards the ball...Quaffle, that Ingrid had gotten. He raced below her and Simon and saw Ingrid make a soft pass. Simon easily caught the ball, but Parker having seen the practice matches knew that the soft throws could be intercepted easily and worried that Ingrid was doing it incase it was him.

He appreciated the gesture, but not if they lost because of it.

Simon moved down the field and Parker moved in to be close incase Simon needed to get rid of the Quaffle quickly. As Parker flew he began to realize what he'd signed up for as he needed to use a lot of sensing about what was happening all around him to avoid other players or Bludgers.

And just like that he saw Simon throw a soft one his direction. And like that Parker had the Quaffle.

You have it. Now remember 2 and 3

Parker sped up a bit and tried to zig zag to ensure he wasn't a prime target. As he got closer to the hoops at the end of the field Parker momentarily looked down to make sure Simon was still below him. He saw a reddish brown robe and tossed it harder than the other two had just as he was about to get into the scoring zone.

As he began to quickly circle back incase of a misfire on his part, Parker let out a breath he hadn't realized he'd been holding.

Five: remember to breath.

Eden Manger, Teppadren Seeker

October 15, 2017 1:00 PM
Another broom came this year with her father's name attached. Last year, it hadn't come until after Christmas, but this one was earlier. In preparation for a full, successful season, as the note explained. Of course, it was arguably not going to be a “full” season, since there were only two teams, but Eden supposed she couldn't expect her dead dad to know everything.

She still had no idea how this was even happening. The arrangements themselves weren't necessarily the unbelievable part - her father had always been one step ahead - but that he'd known she'd end up playing, and that he would-.... That he wouldn't be around to witness her experiences. It was that part that the second year could simply not comprehend. She hadn't known him to have the Sight, nor even really put much stock in such a thing, but somehow he had just… known.

And now here she was, shivering slightly against the cool but manageable wind. She was seeking for two Houses now technically, for Teppenpaw and Aladren, for Jake, Arnold, and Sally. The stakes were raised as she hoped to do well by all three of her alumni siblings, and, after an apparent string of good fortune last year, Eden had gotten a little spoiled by winning. She wanted to do it again.

She glanced nervously at Ginger, who was basically family as Jake’s girlfriend and who, while Eden was unsure of the official hierarchy of the combined teams, she regarded as an authority. Eden tried to look brave, but she was certain her expression gave away her slight reluctance.

Fortunately there wasn't much time for that, as Professor Gray released the Snitch. Eden focused her blue eyes in on the golden ball with all her might, but it was so small and so quick. By the time she could get into the sky, she'd lost it in the air. Quickly debating between pursuing Lily in the hopes of letting her find it and then outspeeding her, and splitting off on her own to cover more space, she decided for the moment to act upon the former instinct. She followed at a fair distance, scanning and rescanning all around them and hoping she wasn't already screwing the whole thing up.

OOC: Apologies for no color coding in the subject line. I, with some difficulty, typed this on mobile and was too afraid to monkey with the coding. Cheers.

His brother had, by all accounts Joe had half-heard, been complete and total rubbish as a captain. Leadership, for all the efforts Mom, the Scouts, Sonora, and probably God Himself had put into trying to make it otherwise, was just not something John was wired right for. Someone acutely okay with being himself and being by himself (the first letter Joe had gotten from home this year had been from Julian, demanding that he persuade John that it was not acceptable to live in a tent) and not very interested in other people except as they related to his interests and comforts was not an ideal candidate for the complicated job of making people work together and think they liked it and that the things they were doing which they didn’t wish to do had actually been their own ideas all along. It might, admittedly, have been better if John hadn’t been indulging in some Goethe-level existential angst all year last year, but even under the best of circumstances, Joe doubted John would have been particularly brilliant in that particular post.

One thing his brother had been pretty good at, though, was hitting Bludgers at people, and he had passed something of this skill along to Joe. Joe was, therefore, not surprised to find that when Teppenpaw and Aladren sorted their members into one team, they had decided to give him a Beater’s bat. Less fortunately, they gave the other one to Jozua – something Joe considered unfortunate not because of anything to do with Jozua, but more to do with the Pecari Seeker. Joe thought it would probably be best if he was the one to do his best to hospitalize Lily Spencer, all things considered, though if Jozua did take a swing at her he’d have Joe’s admiration. Intimate friendships weren’t really something Joe was familiar with, but he’d gathered that most Teppenpaws (though admittedly, Jozua wasn’t most Teppenpaws to begin with) were averse to hitting at least those persons they considered such friends with Bludgers.

The most important thing, however, was protecting Eden. The Seeker looked like a pretty, delicate little thing to him, the sort it was pretty much instinctual to protect, but she had caught the Snitch last year and therefore would, if they had any sense at all, be a high priority for the Pecari Beaters. Therefore, as Joe rose in the air he kept an eye out for the first Bludger he could see, and when it angled even vaguely in her direction, he whacked it toward the Pecari Chasers plus Mordue, hoping to scatter the clump they rapidly formed around the Quaffle and take any pressure he could off Eden at the same time.

October 15, 2017 9:22 PM
Seeing her first year friend among the Pecari (plus Simon Mordue) Chasers before the match, Amelia made it a point to smile and wave to him. His coworkers for the moment were both pureblood and one was a Crotalus, so inspiring paranoia was entirely possible on top of being desirable – it might break up any degree of cohesion they had, or at least create enough of a crack in it to allow the Teppadrens something to work with.

Overall, Amelia was happy with her team, even though she had been put out of her customary role by Eden Manger. Amelia liked Eden and the other girl had beaten her fair and square last year, which made it only sensible that she play Seeker today. Teppenpaw Beaters were a slightly stranger prospect – Tepps were supposed to be too soft for that kind of thing, weren’t they? – but one of them had started the Dueling Club and one of them had punched the headmaster, so they made sense enough. Ginger Pierce was also probably the best Keeper in the school, so even if Jack, Louis, and Amelia didn’t keep things together (which there was no reason for them not to do), she didn’t worry too much about Simon or Parker getting in an indecent number of goals, anyway. She really thought their peculiar little hybrid-team had a good chance in this match, even with the advantage that Pecalus had with being almost entirely drawn from one House.

Ingrid got the ball first, which was not a huge surprise. What was more surprising was that she managed to pass it to Simon and then Simon managed to pass it to Parker, even though they were clearly taking it easy on the new guy. Amelia made a small face of frustration, partially blaming herself – she and Louis had both played and trained as Chasers here and there, but it wasn’t the position they’d trained most or most recently for, and it didn’t really occur to Amelia to portion any of the blame to Louis while blaming herself was perfectly reasonable to do. When Parker had the ball, though, she focused on him. He’d be the easiest to steal from, no doubt, unless one of the other two did something really weird….

Or unless he went into the scoring zone. There was always that. As Amelia drew up short of it to see how the throw went, though, she realized Parker wasn’t attempting to score. Where was the Quaffle, then? She cursed to herself as she looked for it, realizing she had been so intent on what she thought would happen that she hadn’t paid much attention to what had actually happened.

<font color=blue>Capt Jack,Teppadren,Chaser</font>

October 16, 2017 4:05 PM
After a minor anxiety attack in the morning, Jack felt better about their chances than before. Certainly it was a disappointment, not having a full team, but it wasn't going to spell a loss for them. He wasn't fond of the combined team name - though it was admittedly more preferable to Pecalus - but working with Teppenpaw wasn't nearly as awful as he expected.

Jack was the seasoned Chaser of Aladren, having played the position since his first year, so he did not aim to disappoint. He trusted Louis and Amelia to do their best, but he had a high expectation for himself to keep the Chasers afloat. Goals did not happen without a fight; he only hoped Eden would take them home with a win. As he readied himself for today's match, new uniform robes ironed and impeccable, he gave himself a little pep talk in the mirror to abate his nervousness. He didn't want to fail especially as part of a combined team.

He would be playing against his sister's team again. Whilst Jack wasn't directly playing against her, he was nervous for her safety. He had learnt not to smother her with his overprotective tendencies, but he couldn't help his mind wandering to imagining terrible situations happening to her on the pitch. He could only hope that Jozua wouldn't be too hard on her or aim too well, for her sake at least. Of course, he also didn't want her to catch the Snitch, but that bit he left up to Eden.

Once the match began, Ingrid was quick to get the Quaffle and pass it on to her team-mates. Jack cursed and followed behind, eyes locked onto the path of the Quaffle. He momentarily ignored his other team-mates, looking for a way to intercept it - the Quaffle was much too close to the hoops now and Jack felt the minor panic and determination to do something about it rise in him. He half-expected Fitzgerald to throw it into the hoops, but, knowing his own feinting tactics, Jack followed the nearest Pecalus Chaser just in case. If Parker did throw it to the hoops, Jack would have no chance at intercepting it. However...

Before he could finish the thought, Jack found his opportunity and swooped in, accidentally knocking into the other red and brown-robed Chaser with one arm as he was hit with the Quaffle on the other. That would smart later, but at least he had the Quaffle securely in hand. The bludger Joe had, Jack assumed, meant for the Pecalus Chasers, nearly grazed him in the bedlam; his heart leapt into his throat and he could feel his hair standing on end at the close call.

Jack turned the Quaffle around and headed straight out of the confusion to the other end of the pitch. His eyes darted around for either Amelia or Louis, and when he spotted one of them, he dropped suddenly down and up again, hoping to shake the opposition at least for a second, and threw the Quaffle hard at his team-mate.

The match got off to a good start. Simon had picked up her pass. It was a shame there was such a gap in their ages and houses… Had things fallen out differently, maybe they’d have been people who got on, or at least been team-mates. After that, the pass even made it to Parker. Yes! Although she knew fortunes could change very quickly in a Quidditch match, it was always good to get off to a positive start, especially for a new player like Parker. Making his first catch in a match would surely increase his confidence, and hopefully have him playing at his best for the whole game.

She made her way forward, hoping that Parker would have the nerve to go for goal, but also understanding that he might not. Anyway, if he did, Ginger would be throwing the ball out afterwards, whichever way it went, and so being up that end of the pitch in order to mark one of the Teppadren players was a good plan.

It seemed like Parker wasn’t quite ready to go for goal yet. He made a pass. Ingrid was aware of a Bludger being hit into the Chaser mix, so she glanced over her shoulder to check for danger. That reduced her awareness of the hazards immediately around her. It was sharply brought back as something collided with her. Her first half-thought was that it was the other Bludger, whilst almost simultaneously the thought was quelled by the fact it was not hard enough, or the right shape. Jack, diving for the Quaffle, had knocked into her. He came off better - not that she was hurt from the minor shove, but he had the Quaffle. Still, the Bludger went wide of both of them, so things could be worse.

She took a moment to steady herself, throwing a thumbs up at Parker. Sure, they had just lost the ball, but no one kept hold of it forever - they’d had a series of good passes, and she didn’t want him to lose heart.

She turned tail, following the ball down the pitch, although she didn’t have much hope of catching it before Jack passed.

Looking for the Snitch was just a little boring. Lily let her eyes wander to the Chasers to see the position she'd given up for this. They looked like they were having a good time and Jack was doing rather well. She always forgot that he was actually not terrible at Quidditch. Lily glanced at Eden, making sure the other Seeker hadn't found the Snitch yet. It seemed like she was following her, but she couldn't be sure.

'Focus, Lily, focus,' she told herself and flew a bit faster, her eyes scanning.

There were moments she thought she saw those glints of gold and her heart leapt at the prospect, but it always evaded her before she could even make a move towards it. Lily glanced at Eden again and dove down and up, copying her brother's move. It was more or less a way to entertain herself than to shake Eden off.

Suddenly she felt her heart leap again and she shot off after a flash near the stands. The wind was whipping her hair around and she cursed her vanity at that moment. She folded herself down on the broom, heart racing with the fear that Eden, who was more experienced with wins, would reach it before her, or that she would crash into the stands and die a hero's death. As she neared, the Snitch flew downwards, then up and towards the hoops. Luckily she was close enough that it didn't disappear on her and she felt herself straining forward to reach it faster.

When she was finally within distance, her heart in her throat, her shaking hand swiped at it, but it dropped down. Her fingers hadn't even skimmed it.

"Come on!" she shouted at no one. Three times she swiped at it and three times it evaded her. Finally, on the fourth try, with a frustrated cry she grabbed it and felt the cool golden circle in her hand. She'd caught the Snitch!

"I did it!" she yelled, flying around the pitch. "I caught the Snitch!" All of her feelings evolved into euphoria and she let go of her broom for a second to pump both fists in the air. She let out a victorious 'whoop.' "I did it!"

Parker Fitzgerald, Pecalus Chaser

October 25, 2017 6:05 AM
Parker was feeling good after his breath of air, and then his stomach lurched a bit as the Quaffle he threw went into someone else's hands. Looking below him as it happened Parker realized just how full contact the sport was as one chaser ran into Ingrid, while a Bludger flew by them both nearly knocking Teppadren player in the process.

Parker quickly reached into his pocket to feel the last little bit of the Juniper branch he had brought with him to school. It wasn't an apple, but there was something reassuring about it while he rode a flying freaking broom. Out of the corner of his eye, he saw Ingrid give a thumbs up as he sped off in pursuit of the Quaffle. Again, Parker appreciated the gesture, but with the heat of competitiveness stoked now after that, he only bashed himself inside his head and got angry.

He went through his list in his head again. He had succeeded in number one, but failed at number two while trying to do number three. Number two was more important, and if he was honest, was probably the most important to him. He felt like he had to prove his worthiness for being put in this position, and so he mentally scratched off the whole list and wrote a new one that was short and sweet.

One - Help your team win.

He was now down the field trying to follow the older boy who he didn't know. All Parker could tell was the older boy was a lot better at flying. He saw that the Quaffle was about to be thrown and Parker went as fast as he knew how, racing for where he thought the ball might go. As the older boy dropped down and popped back up though Parker couldn't move is broom fast enough to get in between the ball and watched it fly over his head.

Gah! Drats! Parker began kicking himself again until he realized he was now in front the Quaffle. He turn around so that he might head towards whoever had the Quaffle and possibly play chicken with whoever had it. As Parker had just noted from the interception, this was a full contact sport, so he might as well get a little contact. He took a bit wider turn than he anticipated since he was going so fast and sped forward towards the Quaffle as he breathed out.

This was either going to be really good or insanely stupid, both scenarios worked for Parker as it appeared from his perspective to follow his now one rule.
