The accomplice [TAG: Rosalynn] by Lorena Abernathy

“Come on, Ros!” Lorena beamed as she dragged her roommate and friend down the corridor. She was so excited. When Tommy had approached her, she of course had a number of questions; Lorena almost always had questions, just sometimes she was too self-conscious to ask them, but not in this case, where she had sent them at Tommy rapid-fire. What did she need to do? What exactly would be involved? What should Rosalynn wear? What should she wear?

Tommy had given all the information he could (on Lorena’s own outfit, he could not comment, but he did say that Rosalynn was always beautiful in every outfit, so that was sweet to hear of her friend), which Lorena appreciated, and she had agreed to be his secret accomplice. That was very difficult, because secrets made her nervous, and when she was nervous, she tended to babble, especially to her friends. This was a relatively new discovery, since she never really had friends before Sonora, but it definitely applied to Isla and Rosalynn. She was very chatty in their dorm room the night before a big test, and this was like ten times as exciting!

Still, she kept her word to Tommy and did not tell a soul, especially not Rosalynn (although she might have hinted at it to Isla). And she wore a nice dress, not that it mattered but mostly to subliminally shape Rosalynn’s dressing choices. This was a big night - she would probably want to look extra special.

Exactly half an hour before dinner was to be served, Lorena fulfilled her promise and rounded the entrance to the Cascade Hall, with Rosalynn in tow.

The mastermind by Tommy Jamison

Tommy felt his heart pounding in his chest as he waited for the girls. Of course, he already knew what Rosalynn would say - she had essentially already said it at the Opening Feast - but this was still a momentous occasion. Mom let him watch Muggle TV shows sometimes, or he watched them with Theo on visits, and whenever the kids had a big school dance, there were fancy and elaborate “promposals” that went along with asking the girl you liked to go as your date. And Tommy wanted that. More than that, his girlfriend deserved it.

He had gotten some help from Zara Jackson, the seventh year Prefect for his House. He went specifically to the oldest person because he wanted to make sure everything was done right. So the banners would change color and glow and move when he wanted, and the cake would-... well, no spoilers.

Soon enough, though, he saw them. Or her, really. He appreciated Lorena, but his eyes were absolutely locked on Ros the moment she came into his field of vision. The only thing louder than his heartbeat now was the sound of the banners unfurling from the ceiling behind him to reveal the words ROSALYNN - WILL YOU GO TO THE BALL WITH ME? in bright flashing letters, combined with the cake on the table that shot fireworks upward. He stood in front of it all, not noticing the sight he had worked so hard on. The view before him was better.

With his free hand, Tommy adjusted his bowtie. With the other, he held a single red rose. His face flushed. He waited.

The Mark by Rosalynn Tellerman

"I'm coming!" Rosalynn promised Lorena as her roommate hurried her along the corridor. She wasn't quite sure what had the other girl so excited, but it was catching and Ros felt her anticipation rising for whatever it was. Lorena had dressed up for it though, so Ros had matched the effort, not wanting to be underdressed for whatever her roommate was leading her into. She'd almost suspect a surprise birthday party, but her birthday wasn't until March, so that couldn't be it.

She followed Lorena into the Cascade Hall, half an hour too early for dinner, so it wasn't a dinner party, but further speculation was interrupted by banners unfurling and firework and Tommy in a bowtie.

Her hand came up to cover her mouth, but not quickly enough to cover the "Oh my gosh," that escaped her lips, half laughing, half in shock. Small spots of color appeared on her cheeks as the spectacle drew all kinds of attention to them. (Not that she minded attention, she just usually had a little more warning before she was about to be in the center of it.)

After the fireworks ran their course, she approached her boyfriend, shaking her head in amazement, smiling like wild, and staring a little bit at the banner. She hugged her boyfriend tightly (being careful not to crush the rose or stab herself on it), and whispered, "You are insane and I love you, of course I'll go to the ball with you!"

Mission: success! by Tommy Jamison

Tommy smiled the moment he saw her, but the way she absolutely glowed back at him only deepened and goo-ified his own expression. She looked so happy, and so beautiful, and that was all he wanted for her. The happiness, that was. Rosalynn was free to be as ugly as she wanted to be. She would always be beautiful to him.

She hugged him tightly, and the relief washed over him. She was definitely saying yes. There was no reason for her not to - after all, she had basically informed him they were going across the room at the Opening Feast - but the confirmation was so validating anyway.

He was expecting the “of course I’ll go to the ball with you” part, but the other part caught him completely off guard. The three big words that grown ups said to each other and to their kids, but he had never said to a girl his age and definitely had never been said to him by a girl his age before. His parents were not shy about their I love yous, and neither were the Spurns or Sophie’s family, but to actually live something like that, now, here, and so young. It absolutely floored him.

“Y-yeah?” he stumbled, grinning too wide and thoughtless. “I love you too!” he echoed happily. He sat the rose on the table behind him so he could hug her properly, and he held tight. Tommy completely forgot about anyone and everyone else in the room. He didn’t notice any stares, nor see Lorena politely slip away to give them their moment. It was just him and Rosalynn. His girlfriend since day one. And she loved him.

Congratulatory fireworks! by Rosalynn Tellerman

She hadn't quite been aware of exactly what she'd said until Tommy said it back. She'd been thinking it for a few months already, but it had never quite crossed her lips until now, because somehow it had never felt like quite the right time to just out and say it. She guessed this was what she was waiting for? Not so much the over the top promposal as just the moment when it felt entirely natural, like it was as easy as breathing, to verbalize how she had come to regard Tommy, without overthinking it or making it awkward.

They had always been easy together and it was only right for saying she loved him to feel the same way. They'd started dating more or less by accident, so the first declaration of love ought to be by accident, too. It was how they rolled. Easy, natural, friendly, perfect. Merlin, she really did love him.

She hugged him again as he put the rose aside and hugged her back, just as tight as the first time (she would have hugged tighter, but she'd started at her greatest strength, without realizing she might need to escalate it).

If they had been in a slightly less public setting, with a bit less attention already on them, she might have gone for a kiss on the lips as well, but under the circumstances, she just pressed her face against his shoulder and held on for a moment before tentatively starting to pull away. If he wasn't done with the hug, she was fine continuing it until he was, but she was also eager to smell her rose and eat her cake.

(He got her a cake, just to ask her to the ball, when they had already agreed to go together!)

When they did pull apart (though she kept hold of his hand in her own), she turned her attention to the cake. "Is it chocolate?" she asked, smiling, feeling warm and loved, and knowing he knew that was her favorite.
