There weren’t a lot of great options for dates when you were eleven years old and went to a boarding school, but Tommy knew it was his duty to make do. He had not anticipated committing himself to a girl so quickly upon arriving at a new school, but somehow it had all fallen into place with Rosalynn in record-breaking time (probably). At first, he hadn’t really had a crush on her - he had just been being polite and, after all, he barely knew her - but having spent some time with her now, Tommy had come to the conclusion that his girlfriend was pretty darn cool.
Throughout the first semester, he had managed to maintain a tradition of bringing her flowers every Friday. They were now a couple weeks into the second half of the year, and he knew he had to step up his game. Girls were very special, and they deserved to know it, so he didn’t want to get stale or anything like that. So he had to do something cool.
He picked a Saturday evening and told the boys he couldn’t hang out. Stanley had teased him, but, naturally, had to ultimately understand, since he too now had a girlfriend. He asked Rosalynn to meet him for a nice dinner in the Cascade Hall at 6:30, so he scurried down around 5:45 to make sure it was ready. He had asked the Prairie Elves to arrange a little table for them, and they even let them have candles!
Tommy found himself unreasonably nervous while he waited, so he just adjusted his tie a little bit (had to make sure the clip didn’t show!) and stood beside the table. Finally he saw her heading his way, and he flashed a big grin. “Hi!” he greeted cheerfully. “Can I get your chair?”
She had gone into midterm being about 75% sure she had a boyfriend. At first, she had just thought Tommy was sweet, but then she'd twigged to the realization that she was the only person he gave flowers to. When Mom had teasingly asked if she'd met any nice boys, she'd told her about Tommy, and Mom had thought he was adorable and definitely agreed he was probably sweet on her, so she'd returned to school 90% sure she had a boyfriend.
When she met him for dinner at a table with - no joke - genuine candles, and he was wearing a proper tie, and offering to hold her chair for her, she concluded absolutely, 110%, she had a boyfriend. She beamed back at him and was glad she'd dressed nicely in her favorite purple blouse and blue skirt.
"Thank you," she accepted his offer, then sat down in the seat he had pulled out for her, feeling like a real life princess. She had the best boyfriend ever. And he was handsome, too!
"It looks lovely," she complimented the spread he had arranged for them. Once he was seated as well, she added some food to her plate and took a small bite, hoping she was using her fork right, which wasn't really a concern she normally had when eating dinner on a Saturday at school. "I am impressed," she told him, because she was. Effort had clearly been made for this night. She was flattered.
Gosh, Rosalynn was cute. Tommy was really glad this thing seemed to be working out. He almost wondered for a second if it was organized somehow, like the school picked out a girlfriend for you like how it picked out your House based on your personality, but then Wally didn’t have a girlfriend yet and Stanley had only just gotten one, so maybe that wasn’t the case. Still, it was so funny that he had immediately met Rosalynn, practically right off the wagon.
With her approval, he pulled out her chair for her and then pushed her up close enough to the table. Then Tommy went around to the other side and seated himself across from her. “I’m so glad you like it,” he replied, absolutely beaming. “The prairie elves were a huuuuge help.” Not to take away his own accomplishments here, but Tommy believed in giving credit where it was due.
Tommy had taken more etiquette classes than he cared to count, so perhaps embarrassingly,he knew very well which forks were designed for which courses. However, he was on a date and not in an analytical homework situation, so he paid zero attention to which fork Rosalynn reached for. He took a sip of his drink; the elves had even let them use some fancy wine glasses, filled instead with sparkling grape juice. He took a quick glance around the Hall, just curious about how many other students were around right now and if they were looking at them at all, but he couldn’t look around too long because that was rude to Rosalynn, and also, he didn’t really care what anybody else thought.
