Lavender was really looking forward to catching up with Val tonight. The Teppenpaw had to be her closest non-related friend at Sonora and the Crotalus was eager to spend time with her and become hopefully even closer.
And the note she had to deliver tonight might help things. Stanley had given Lavender a note to give to Val. Apparently, her cousin was... interested in Val. And while the Teppenpaw wasn't a pureblood-she doubted Ryan and Sophie would care about that given that Ryan just wanted his kids to be happy and Sophie genuinely did not care about these things in general-if Val was with Stanley, then, well, they'd be like family then.
As it was Lavender often felt like Val was closer to Bonabelle than her, and while she felt guilty about it, she couldn't help feeling...a tad jealous at times. She wanted to have that special Best Friends Forever sort of friendship with someone and she was worried Val already had that with Bonabelle. And maybe if Val was dating Lavender's cousin, they'd get closer instead.
Of course, the Crotalus wasn't adverse to all three of them-herself,Val and Bonabelle- being Best Friends Forever, but three was a terrible friendship dynamic. And she didn't even know whether or not Bonabelle even liked her much. And if Val and Bonabelle were Best Friends Forever, than Lavender couldn't also be Best Friends Forever with Val if she wasn't also Best Friends Forever with the Aladren too and she'd have to find a different one!
Also, what if Val did decide to go out with Stanley and then they broke up? Would that affect Lavender's friendship with the Teppenpaw? If they fought, would she end up in the middle? The Crotalus didn't want that either! Family was family and one tended to have to be loyal to family-most of the time anyway, Daddy had sided with Uncle Jeffrey over his sister, Stanley's biological grandmother, because she was a horrible person but Stanley wasn't like her-and then even if Lavender was Best Friends Forever with Val that would make things complicated....and she didn't like things like that being complicated.
Which, come to think of it, would that also be the case if Val said no to Stanley?
Lavender smiled as her friend approached. "Hi. Um, I have a note from my cousin Stanley to give you." She pulled the note out of her pocket and handed it towards Val. She needed to just get this out of the way so they could get on with catching up.
OOC: Text of Stanley's note can be seen in his MARS post.
Valentine finally was going to get some time to hang out with Lavender again! They had written over the summer and were doing class things, but now she was finally just going to sit down and reconnect properly. Lavender was one of her closest friends... maybe her closest at the moment? She wasn't sure. Bonabelle was acting a little strange, and it was worrying her. She wasn't even quite sure how to describe it, but something was wrong. She was going to need to fix it, soon.
But that was for later, now was for Lavender! As Val made her way across the Hall she spotted her friend and smiled wide at her. Lavender was smiling as well, excellent! All seemed right with this corner of the world. She approached her friend with arms ready to engulf the girl in a traditional hug, when Lavender pulled a note from her pocket and offered it to her. "Hi.. Oh." She commented, taken a little off guard. Stanley wrote her a note? She took the note and then proceeded to wrap her arms around Lavender as tradition dictated. Then she took the seat next to the girl.
"Stanley gave you a note to give me?" She asked looking at the folded up bit of paper in her hands. It felt.. heavy somehow, not physically, but... she couldn't describe it. "If he needs help in class," She giggled a little nervously, "There are better people to ask." That wasn't what was in this note, someone would have to be pretty desperate to ask her for academic help. No, her mind went back to where it had been stuck a few times since she'd gotten back to school... Aunt Giselle's tea reading. Was Stanley? Was this..? She gave Lavender another nervous smile. Did she know what was in it? There was a simple way to find out, she could just open the note and read it. Why was she hesitating? It's not like the note's contents could start a new era in her life, transition her from happy, innocent girl to.... whatever came next?
"Do you....?" She started to ask Lavender, but then stopped. It wouldn't really matter. "Nevermind." Then she took a breath and opened the note. Her eyes scanned the page, and her mind and stomach both somersaulted about while her lips unconsciously parted in a bright smile, and her face shifted a few shades redder. She was cute? She was 'really cute'? She had been right, now what was she going to say? What did she want to say? She didn't know... she really, really didn't know.
Finally she pulled her eyes away from that part that said 'really cute', and the whole line under it to look back at Lavender. Had she known.... yes. Yes she did, Valentine could see it in her friend's eyes and face. "Lavender," She started, trying her best to keep her voice as calm and nonchalant as possible, "I know we have lots and lots to catch up on, but..." she drew the pause out for just a moment longer than necessary, "I think maybe first you should tell me all you can about your cousin Stanley."
"Don't sell yourself short" Lavender replied when Val mentioned that there were better people for Stanley to ask for help in school than her. It might technically be true, because there were people like Wally and Gabriel along with other Aladrens and older students but Val, as far as the Crotalus was concerned was plenty smart enough. "You helped me a lot in Defense last year." Okay that had been more practical help than academic but thinking on one's feet and problem solving in order to cover up a mistake that Lavender had made were types of intelligence too. And ones that the Crotalus didn't personally think she was very good at herself.
She waited patiently for Val to read the note. When her friend finished, Lavender nodded in understanding. Of course Val would want to know more about Stanley before going on to catch up, otherwise, how could she make an informed decision?
Although, come to think of it, if Stanley and Val didn't know each other well, why was he interested in her? Not that the Teppenpaw didn't have a lot of wonderful qualities, but how would he know beyond what Lavender had said about her? The Crotalus very much wanted to believe that her cousin wasn't so shallow that it was mainly about looks and she really didn't think he was. Val did seem to have a reputation for being happy and friendly and maybe Lavender had said enough other nice things that made Stanley interested in the Teppenpaw.
The Crotalus thought for a moment at her friend's question."He's very Pecari-ish." She replied. "He also has a big heart. I mean, not that those things are mutually exclusive." Most of the Pecaris she knew-her dad, her cousins Arabella, Scarlett, Fabian and Natalie, Stanley's mom, Sophie-were kind good-hearted people, but the two things were not necessarily associated with each other either. Not all Pecaris were nice people. For example, Aunt Pearl had been a Pecari. And she was pretty much the worst person ever, to the point that her own siblings and father had sided with her ex-husband during their divorce. Also, some of the others Lavender had been in class with didn't impress her as kindhearted either and there had been a Pecari girl who'd been rude to Ivy too."He's really good with his little sister too." She added.
Valentine smiled sweetly at Lavender as her classmate tried to reassure her. It was a kind gesture, and appreciated, but denying reality didn't get you very far. "Thanks, I'm glad to help whenever I can but," She gave Lavender a knowing look, "There are people better suited for academic assistance than me." She smiled again, "That's alright, everyone is different. I'm not terrible at school... I'm just not great." She giggled at a memory, "Papa always says that mathematically speaking, only half of the people in the world are 'above average'."
Lavender thought for a moment before answering her question. Valentine took that as a good sign. She was going to need a real answer, not just a 'he's nice' type of response. Still the butterflies swarmed about her stomach as Lavender considered her response. What would she say? What could she say that would make her think one way or the other? How did she want to feel about this? She listened, very intently to Lavender's answer.
She couldn't help giggle a bit nervously at the 'Percari-ish' comment. That she knew at least from the interactions she'd had with him. Not that there had been all that many. A big heart was a good thing. "He has a little sister?" She asked without really realizing it. She really didn't know him all that well. She looked at the note again, and blushed slightly once more. "I... I think I'm leaning towards saying yes." She paused as she realized she wasn't sure if she could make her mouth stop forming the smile that was nearly always there. It seemed to have a mind of it's own at the moment. "It'd be a good way to get to know him better, right?" She looked at Lavender again, the smile unable to leave her face and the butterflies dancing in her stomach. "Do you think that's a good idea?"
