Mortimer (and a little of Vivien) Brockert

Tonight was the Midsummer Ball. This time, staff were allowed to bring adult guests and for some bizarre reason, his wife Vivien had wanted to attend. This was rather unfathomable to Mortimer, as he certainly didn't want to. He'd actually rather snarkily suggested that she could go instead of him and had told her-rather sarcastically-to have a good time.

Fortunately, they'd been married long enough for Vivien to take it in stride. Several years, five sons, and ten grandchildren later, she was more than used to her husband's attitude. Besides, it wasn't as if he was actually annoyed with her, he just didn't like social events. Especially ones where there wasn't a good scotch present and lots of teenagers and their hormones were. For her part, Vivien was curious about this aspect of her husband's life since he rarely seemed to find it interesting enough to talk about. Besides, their oldest grandchild, Emerald, would be attending Sonora next year and Vivien couldn't help but be a little interested in the students who'd be attending school with her, even if her own classmates hadn't arrived yet.

It wasn't as if Mortimer paid attention to the students enough to know a lot about them as individuals so he couldn't give Emerald his opinions. Besides, he was proud to say that she was much more interested in the well-stocked library than her social life. If she was really curious about her classmates-which only would apply to those going into their second year-she could ask Angelique who'd had class with them this year.

Now it was time for the ball to begin. The Cascade Hall was decorated in a space "Out of This World" sort of theme. A bit of magic had charmed the ceiling to show not a simple starry night, but a rotating series of galaxies and nebulas. The Aladren in him really appreciated this. There were also several of what Mortimer assumed to be planets hanging from the ceiling which revolved around a sun, a series of constellations projected on the walls, and several models of what must have represented denziens of other planets wandering around that the students could interact with if they got bored of dancing or had nobody else to talk to.

He stood, Vivien sitting behind him. Mortimer placed a smile on his face"Hello students and welcome to our Midsummer Ball. Your yearbooks are located on the table over there. Have a good time. Now I'd like to call our prefects and Head Students and their dates to do the opening dance." With that Mortimer sat down. Vivien made her way to get a yearbook for Emerald but he stopped her. "If Emerald wants to see one, Owen will probably be glad to show her his."

OOC-Yearbooks will be linked on the OOC board when Amelle gets them done. Please be patient about them because she is not required to do this and does it simply because she wants to. Feel free to write for the aliens if you care to interact with them. Have fun!

As the ball’s proximity increased, so did Finn’s nervousness. He wouldn’t say he was actually dreading the event – far from it, he was sure he’d have fun once it had actually started – but during the run-up he’d found himself with too much time to think about potential problems. Would he look right? His mother said that his tuxedo was fine, and he trusted her, but what if moths had got into the shirt? There would be dancing, and he did know the basics of how to dance, but what if he got flustered, tripped up, and embarrassed Juniper? Talk of Juniper, what if she didn’t actually want to go with him and had only agreed to because she was a fellow Teppenpaw and therefore nice? No, he knew he could discount the last concern. He and Juniper were friends now, or so he thought, and he had enough self-confidence to believe that people would want to spend time with him. Besides, Juniper was far from a concern. If anything, she was the opposite. Any potential trouble at the ball wouldn’t really matter, because he wouldn’t be going alone. Juniper would be there to help him, to brush over or laugh off any embarrassments, and would make the ball much more enjoyable. He just hoped that she would think the same way, would realise that he was also there for her (if, that was, she wanted him to be).

Now that his fears had been logically considered and found to be unimportant (and now that he’d checked and found his shirt to be intact), Finn felt much happier about the ball. He was smartly dressed in a tailor-made tuxedo, complete with bowtie, which felt a little over-the-top seeing as he wasn’t used to dressing up quite so smartly, but also made him feel quite respectable. He’d got Jozua to check that he looked fine, and once he’d received the ok from his roommate he wished him a good evening and went down to the common room to wait for Juniper. Shortly after she appeared, looking pretty in her dress. He told her that, slightly shyly but nevertheless managing to pluck up the courage.

The Headmaster kept his speech short, which was a relief – all the decorations and the dressed-up students were far too distracting for Finn to pay attention for long. He sat and watched the prefects dance, envying how much older and more graceful they looked, then turned to Juniper. “Would you like to dance?” he asked, deciding that it was the done thing to offer. Hopefully he could manage to manoeuvre his way around the dance floor without any collisions. “Or we could go get something to eat and drink?”

Juniper was super incredibly anxious about the ball tonight. It wasn't Finn, he was...probably her friend. She wanted to consider him as such but always second guessed herself on such matters. People were so complicated compared to animals. That he had asked her to the ball-as his date rather even than just hanging out with her there-when there were so many other girls in their class and they were only first years anyway was something she took as a good sign though.

That did not mean that she was even remotely comfortable being in social situations where there were lots of people and Juniper knew full well that balls were that exactly. It didn't matter that this was not a society ball, as far as she was concerned, it was all the same.

Plus, she was worried about her dress. When Georgia told her that her dress looked nice, her voice sounded a little...strained. Like maybe it wasn't a very good dress, maybe the color wasn't pretty enough. She'd picked one that was an off the shoulder off white champagne type color, because she didn't like to wear bright colors that would stand out and attract too much attention. Or maybe the dress was fine but she just didn't look good in it. Probably that.

And this was Georgia , who going primarily by house placement was likely the nicest girl in their class. If she didn't think Juniper looked good, the Ariannas were sure to be laughing at her.

So by the time she met Finn in the common room, Juniper felt sick to her stomach. However, the fact that he complimented how she looked in her gown made her feel slightly better. Slightly.

However, once they reached the Hall, her nerves started to get the best of her again. All she wanted to do was run out of the room or clutch onto Finn for dear life. Juniper knew full well that she couldn't do either though for if she did the former she'd embarass herself, her date and her family, plus Finn might take it personally as she would certainly do if he did that. However, if she did the latter, he might push her away.

"Would you like to dance?” he asked, deciding that it was the done thing to offer. Hopefully he could manage to manueuvre his way around the dance floor without any collisions. “Or we could go get something to eat and drink?”

"Um, let's get something to eat." Juniper replied. Doing so would attract less attention so long as she didn't spill on herself or others.

Postponing the dancing was a plan Finn was wholeheartedly on board with. He was still happy to take to the floor later, but with a bit of luck it wouldn’t be particularly crowded and also people wouldn’t really be watching the dancing. Although, he supposed, if more people were dancing then fewer people would be looking, but if fewer people were dancing there would be more chance of being looked at. That was a bit of a dilemma, but one to be addressed after food. Things were always better after food.

“That sounds good to me,” replied Finn in agreement, turning to lead the way to the refreshment table. However, he soon realised a slight flaw in their plan. Between the dance floor and the wonderful array of food were a fair few people, enough that Finn thought there was a possibility of being slightly separated from Juniper. This was problematic as Finn had no intention of being separated from Juniper. It felt nice to have her by his side, and he’d be a poor date if he went wandering off.

Fortunately, Finn immediately thought of an obvious solution to this problem. Unfortunately, this next logical move was something that Finn was a little wary of doing, despite finding the idea to be quite appealing. But he figured that if Juniper had any plans to run away screaming she would have done it by now, so after surreptitiously wiping his hand on his jacket to ensure it wasn’t sweaty or clammy, he offered it to Juniper. “If you take my hand, we won’t get separated,” he explained, going a little pink and hoping that he wasn’t stepping out of line at all. He rather wanted her to say yes. As much as a slightly sheltered 11-year-old really thought about such things, he liked Juniper, and her not wanting to take his hand would be very embarrassing.
