Winston Pierce

November 04, 2016 8:07 PM
Having been persuaded to join the archery club by his roommate, Victor, Winston was just getting comfortable with the pull and release of shooting arrows at targets when Aiden decided to mix things up. The game sounded interesting. Or at least, it would have if he was any good at archery.

As it stood now, he expected he'd be doing a lot of the answering today.

He wasn't picky in choosing a partner, mostly because he didn't really know anyone but his roommates very well so far, so nearly anyone fit the bill of relative stranger.

"Shall we do this?" he asked a person whose name he didn't even know (also pretty much everyone outside of Beginner classes, and even some people in them still). "I am Winston Pierce, of the New Hampshire Pierces."

Kit wanted to try everything and Archery was just another thing to try. She had never actually shot a bow and arrow before. In truth, she had never aimed at anything before. These sort of things were considered a male sport, but it was still fun to try so long as it wasn't in front of her mother!

Needing to find a partner since the rules were changed and they were to play a game, she was about to look for someone when someone found her first. "Hello, Winston Pierce o the New Hampshire Pierces. I'm Kit Reid of the Connecticut Reids," she said with a grin. "Yes, let's play. Do you want to go first?"

Winston smiled in relief when he heard her introduction. A good family, then. This game was already paying off. He'd seen her in his classes but hadn't yet put names to all of the Aladren girls and was glad to have this name down at least.

"Ladies first," he insisted, as his father always told him was proper (somehow it was a lot easier to allow Kit Reid of the Connecticut Reids go first than it was to allow his little sister to, so the invitation wasn't even grudging like it usually was). And because he believed in good sportsmanship, too, he added, "Good luck."

"Why, thank you," Kit said with a little bow, done for amusement. Standing with feet slightly apart, she pulled back the string as far as she could. She was fairly certain that she had the bullseye in sight, but that didn't mean much if the arrow didn't follow course. As she let her go, her arm jerked and the arrow sailed to the right and missed completely.

Her bow down, she turned towards Winston with a laugh. "Well, that didn't go very well. Perhaps, yours will be better?"

Winston bowed back, then took a step away to give her room to shoot. She . . . missed.

"Thanks," he answered, knocking his arrow and raising it to point toward the target. He aimed (not at the bulls-eye because he'd found that never worked, but a little bit above and to the left of it), held his breath a moment, then let go of the breath and the arrow at the same time.

The arrow flew, still low and to the right, as he apparently hadn't corrected his aim enough yet, but it at least hit the outer ring of the target. And stayed there. "Whoo!" he cheered, more happy that it had stuck than he was that he had won this round of the 'game'. He had won, though, so he got to ask a question.

"Um," he said, trying to think quickly. He hadn't anticipated winning, so he hadn't had one ready. "Do you like chicken?" he asked and then worried that she'd think it was a stupid question.

Kit wasn't completely surprised that he didn't miss, but she was surprised that he wasn't closer to the bullseye. Either way, she had a question to answer, one that she wasn't expecting. Yet, she was glad that it was a simple one rather than being something completely personal right off the bat. "I do like chicken. Though, I don't like it every type of way. Chicken parm is my favorite. I don't like barbecue at all." She wanted to ask him if he liked it as well, but that wasn't the name of the game.

"My turn?" Testing a hypothesis, Kit aimed a little away from the bullseye before allowing her arrow to go. Yes! This time the arrow struck the target. Unfortunately, it still wasn't close to the middle. But it wasn't quite on the edge either. It was in the ring next to the edged one. "Yay!" She bounced a little in excitement.

He nodded in agreement with her as she answered his question, pleased that she seemed, at least to him, to be answering frankly, honestly, and with greater detail he'd expected. He liked it though, he felt like he was actually getting to know her a little bit.

"Chicken parm is excellent," he offered, not really liking the idea of not offering his own opinion on the matter, even if she hadn't asked. "But I like barbecue, too. The elves make it much better than my father does, though," he admitted, lowering his voice like he was telling her a huge secret.

When she hit the target on her next shot, doing better than his first one, he clapped and cheered right along with her. He gathered she was at least as new at this as he was, and any hit was a victory.

He took his turn, lining up his shot and aiming higher and more to the left than before. He loosed the arrow, and this time it flew clear over the target. Too high that time, apparently.

"I guess it's your question," he told Kit.

Kit was thrilled that he offered up information on their discussion. She noted that he liked chicken parm and barbecue. Though, she was surprised that his father made anything. She knew how to dine in the finest restaurants more than she knew how to eat at home, but when they did, the house elves made the dishes. Following the rules though, she didn't actually ask so much as raise an eyebrow in question.

It was his turn and he missed. "Oh, no!" She cried. It wasn't that she minded asking the next question so much as she had hoped that he would have done better.

"Hmm, what to ask?" She said aloud. "What's your favorite color?"

Oddly, Kit's dismay at his miss made his own disappointment feel smaller. He still wasn't happy that his arrow had neatly sailed over top of the target entirely, but at least the commiseration eased away the sting of failure.

Then she asked her question, and he bit his lip in consideration. "You don't ask the easy ones, do you?" he asked rhetorically, more to buy a few seconds to consider his options than to avoid answering. "I'm not really partial to any of them particularly, but I'm going to go with blue. Not like Aladren blue," he added quickly, worried another Crotalus might overhear and fear House disloyalty, "but like the sky on a clear sunny day." Favorite colors didn't really need justification, but he thought his was pretty obvious just by its association.

"Next arrow?"

Kit's favorite color was not blue, but she approved of Winston's choice of sky blue. "Good choice. I like when there are clouds and you see all the shapes they make." She did that sometimes at their estate when her mother wasn't around to see her laying on the grass.

It was her turn next. She adjusted again and came even closer to the middle. She was so proud of how well she was doing.

"Nice," Winston congratulated when Kit hit their best shot so far.

He lined up his arrow, and took his time aiming and setting his shot. He felt like he needed to show improvement, too. The arrow flew straight and true, directly to where he aimed it, on the outer ring at three o'clock. Why didn't it ever do that when he aimed at the middle?

"Well, I guess that's your question again," he told Kit.

Curious. It appeared that the arrow met its mark, but it was further away from where hers was. Had Winston intentionally allowed her another question or was he showing that he could make his mark? Either way, she was pleased, because his shot had looked good, but she also go to ask another question. "Hmm, I have to think for a moment," she teased slightly. Truthfully, she already knew what she was going to ask. "If you could choose to live in any time period, which one would you choose?"

Winston gave her a moment to come up with a question, then nodded in approval for the one she came up with. "Excellent question," he complimented. "Um," he considered his answer carefully. "Are you talking being born then or being me and getting stranded by time magic?"

Kit had thought that her question wouldn't require a question in turn, but she had to admit that Winston had left her a little flustered. Which one did she want to know more? "Well, if you born into the time period, would you really be you, then? Though, it's interesting to think what possible position you would have been born into and if you would possibly be born into the same family. However, if you were you now and went back, then you already know who you are, but it would be simply in a different time and therefore, you would have the advantage of knowing things that have happened and will happen." It was quite a bit to think about and she was sure could spark quite a debate of sorts. "Let's go with being stranded by time magic."

"That makes it easier," Winston admitted, "in that it introduces fewer variables, but harder because it opens up all of history instead of confining me to just when my family was well off, assuming I'd still be a Pierce." He thought it over for a moment. "I'm going to go with the Renaissance. Thing were pretty interesting in there, but not in the death-and-war kind of interesting. I'd love to talk with some of the great charm inventors of that time, maybe even work with them, so hopefully I'd have time to brush up on my conversational Latin first."
