The Halloween Party was Ayla's first big event as a Sonoran. It was also her first baking club event, fundraising committee event, and spirit club soiree. It was a really busy time for the first year, but she was going to be 12 in a few weeks, and she figured she could manage. Thankfully, she hadn't forgotten to send a letter home requesting a costume, otherwise the entire event would have gone to pot. After baking, and setting up the Fundraising booth, Ayla finally got to go get ready for the party. She'd volunteered to help with take down of the decorations later, as she had so many other things she was involved with, but she was a little sad she didn't get to help put them up. That was the fun part, after all, but someone had to help clean up too, and she was happy to help however she could.

Finally, all the hard work had paid off, and it was time to head down to the party in the MARS room. Ayla had settled on going as a fawn, and had received a lot of help from her mother. The dress she wore was varying shades of cream and brown, and was composed of bits of upcycled lace, and other types of fabric. It looked a bit tatty, but the artistry used to reclaim fabric and compose an entirely new garment was really kind of beautiful in a way. It had thin straps, a sweetheart neckline and was very flowy. The dress hit Ayla at the knee and her shoes were strappy sandals that were charmed to look like hooves.

Her long blonde hair was in wild waves, with a braid across the front, from one side to the other. She wore a floral crown that had realistic looking ears and an stick antlers attached, and had been practicing to get the make-up just right. Once satisfied, she returned to the party, excited to see that people were showing up and it looked like the spirit club had managed to pull it all off. She was on her way to the snack table when she was approached by a very handsome prince. Ayla grinned as Victor complimented her, glad for the color on her cheeks as it was likely to camouflage the fact she was blushing.

“Hi Victor! Thank you! You look rather dashing yourself.” She added, admiring his costume and trying not to wonder if this was some kind of sign that he was dressed as a prince. “Yes, I am so far, but it's definitely better with friends, and cupcakes.” She added. “How about you? As a member of the spirit club, thank you for coming!”

Ayla's costume really was great, and part of Victor was now wishing that his costume could have included face paint. However, he did have a sword, a fact that didn't seem likely to lose its charm anytime soon. Victor didn't generally pay much attention to clothes, but he had noticed that Ayla always looked very...oh, he didn't know how to describe it, but he liked how she always looked.

Victor appreciated being referred to as ‘dashing'. Something about spending time with Ayla always made him feel more confident and adventurous. And was she referring to him as a friend? He certainly hoped so. He was tempted to ask her to dance, but wasn't sure that he wanted to be one of the first dancing, especially as his dance skills weren't the best, despite being passable due to a lot of practise. His mother had always insisted that her boys knew how to dance, but it wasn't really something that came naturally to Victor.

“The cakes are pretty good,” he agreed, thinking back to the one he'd had. It would probably be time for a refuel vaguely soon. “Wait, you were one of the people who organised all of this? That's cool!” He was rather impressed by the idea. Certainly he'd have no idea where to begin.

“I'm glad you think so!” Ayla said cheerfully. Admittedly, she'd only had a hand in a portion of the baking, but she was pretty proud of her achievements, even if her icing piping needed more work. “I helped bake the pumpkin ones. With the cream cheese frosting and the little pumpkin candies on top. So, if you haven't had one, I recommend them. Unless you hate pumpkin, or cream cheese. And if they are horrible, I'll deny I had anything to do with them.” She said with a dimpled smile. She wasn't sure if it was because of the party, all the sugar she'd ingested that night, or being around Victor, but Ayla was really happy. She suspected it was a combination.

“I didn't help with decorating, as I was busy baking and helping set up the fundraising booth earlier, but I'm in the group that did! My spirit squad responsibility tonight is to help clean up afterward.” She said with a shrug. Someday she hoped to be the brains behind something as cool as the Halloween party, since throwing successful gatherings was one of those skills that a society lady needed to have. Until then, she was content to be a minion and help wherever she was needed.

She was having a hard time restraining herself. It often happened when she was really excited or happy, she tended to ramble and ask a lot of rapid fire questions. Her mother had tried to break her of the habit, but on occasion she still slipped. It wasn't like mother was around to police her anyway. Ayla bit her bottom lip as she considered to ask about Victor's costume. Being nosey wasn't ladylike, but she considered him a friend, so she felt comfortable letting herself go a little. Maybe that was bad form, but they were kids in costumes at a Halloween party. She could be a proper lady tomorrow.

"So why a prince? And, is the sword real?" She asked with curious smile.

“I haven't had one of the pumpkin cakes yet, but they'll be the next thing I eat!” promised Victor. He had no dislikes when it came to food, and the pumpkin cakes really did sound yummy!

“I can help you clean up, if you want?” offered Victor, a little surprised as the words came out of his mouth. Taking on extra, unnecessary work wasn't normally his style, but something had prompted him to offer his services to Ayla. Oh well, odds were they already had enough people, and if she did take him up on his offer, it would be a bonus point for him. And he wouldn't mind doing it for her.

“Princes are actually pretty cool,” he informed her. “They have lots of adventures, and they're always the hero.” However, his face fell slightly at her question about his sword, which suddenly didn't seem quite as cool.

“It's not actually real,” he confessed. “Apparently it's too dangerous to take a real sword to a party.” His mother had been quite taken aback when she realised her oldest son had been expecting a real sword as part of his costume. Luckily, Jehan had saved the day by pointing out to Victor that, in case of danger, he could always use his wand to make the sword real. This had comforted the young Crotalus, who had been concerned about failing to live up to his costume if a real emergency arose.

Ayla bit her bottom lip, trying to stifle some of her enthusiasm when Victor said he'd try one of her cupcakes next. It was sweet of him to say, though she expected that he wouldn't necessarily appreciate hearing she felt that way. Milo would, on occasion, do something nice for her, and when she drew attention to it he would groan and revert to being just as awful as ever.

“You'll have to let me know what you think.” She said, unable to keep her smile from spreading across her face. “You'd really do that? For me?” Ayla asked, with her head tilted to the side slightly as she looked at him. “I mean, it would be nice to have someone reach the high stuff, since I'm not great at all the spells yet. I think we've got enough people on spirit squad, but if you want to stay and hang out with me, I won't complain.” Was that too bold? She knew her parents probably wouldn't appreciate her being so...brazen.

“And they always get the girl!” She added, noticing a slight dip in Victor's enthusiasm when she mentioned the sword. “Real or not, I'm sure you could still vanquish spiders with your sword. That's all I require in a hero. Spider killing and reaching things.”

“Of course I would,” assured Victor, now very glad that he'd rashly offered to help Ayla. He liked the idea of reaching things for the smaller girl, and just generally being needed. Forget the other spirit squad people, Ayla wanted him to help. “I'm always up for doing things if I can spend more time with you.” He smiled at her, this time with just a hint of something other than confidence - not quite shyness, but in that direction. For once, Victor was in a situation where his natural self confidence wasn't entirely reliable. As much as he liked them, and as much as he liked to seem confident, he hadn't spent lots of time around girls, and Ayla just seemed so poised.

“Well, that's what happens in the stories!” Ayla was right, rescuing the grateful damsel in distress was another way in which being a prince was pretty much the ideal costume choice. “And spiders don't stand a chance against me.” Maybe he couldn't slay a dragon with his sword, but he seemed to fit the criteria for being Ayla's hero, and that definitely cheered him up.

Was it hot in the MARS room? It certainly felt that way to Ayla. So many things were running through her head, and the feelings...she couldn't even begin to comprehend the feelings. Her cheeks were on fire and her stomach was suddenly full of butterflies. Victor definitely had the charming part of being a prince down. Ayla looked down at her hooves and brushed her blonde hair back behind her real ear as she desperately tried to hold on to her composure. All of the day dreaming she'd done had done absolutely nothing to prepare her for this actually happening. The petite blonde looked back up at the handsome prince, positively beaming.

“You're sweet.” She said in a hushed tone, to avoid anyone else overhearing. “In the most manly and heroic of ways, of course.” She added, still reeling from the fact that Victor basically just admitted that he liked spending time with her. She enjoyed it too, more than was probably appropriate for a lady to display, but it was really hard to care about any of that when a boy like Victor was paying attention to you. Plus, he was super cute, and from a good family. How could that possibly be a bad thing?

“My hero!” Ayla teased, as she clasped her hands together and brought them to her cheek, swooning. “Speaking of spending time with me, would you like to escort me to the snack table for a cupcake, Your Highness?” Not that she needed more sugar, but the young witch thought that maybe eating something would help calm her nerves.

Normally, Victor would hate to be called sweet. It was the obnoxious sort of term used by elderly aunts who pinched your cheeks, and the very thought of it made him shudder. However, when Ayla used the word he found he didn't mind so much. It was different, he supposed, having a girl your age call you sweet. That wasn't a sign of being treated like a little boy. If anything, it was probably the completely opposite, so he took pride in being considered sweet. Her additional sentence helped, too. Really she was saying she thought he was manly and heroic, and Victor felt as if he was living up to his costume.

Then Ayla mentioned cakes, and the whole conversation somehow got even better. Ayla and cake? Bring it on.

“Of course, my lady,” he replied with a grin, offering his arm in an exaggerated old-fashioned and rather princely way.

Ayla happily took Victor's arm, her heart so full she thought it might actually burst out of her chest. She liked the way he'd said ‘my lady' too, even though she knew he was likely just playing along. She kind of wished she'd picked a different costume for herself, something more like Kit's, but still she couldn't help but feel pretty on Victor's arm. She smiled at him as they wove their way through the crowd to the snack table.

There was a nagging voice in the back of her mind that made her wonder what other people might think about them, but she was too happy to care. She would, however, be discussing the situation with Gwen and Kit later.

“Ooo! There they are.” She said, flashing him a dimpled smile as they approached the dessert table. Some of the pumpkin cupcakes had icing that was a little.. wonky. Those had been the ones that Ayla had helped with, not that she'd admit to it. She took two and handed one to Victor. She immediately popped the candy pumpkin that topped the cakes into her mouth, and waited for him to try his with her fingers crossed. “What do you think? Is it awful?” She asked, wrinkling her painted nose.
