Valentine sat on her bed and gazed out of the window of her bedroom. The Christmas bustle and festivities were over and it was one of those boring quiet days afterwards. Her eyes drifted lazily over the backyard outside, there wasn't a snowflake to be seen, nothing really to mark the passage of another joyous holiday.
Pulling her attention back inside, there were a few additions to her belongings scattered about. There was also her gaming notebook and a pile of other books on her desk, just waiting for her to continue working on the next great adventure. At the moment though, she wasn't really in the mood for any of it. She wasn't really sure what she was in the mood for exactly. As always, thoughts of Bonabelle and Wally evoked a smile, but there wasn't much to do about that. Any letter she wrote may as well wait until they were back in school, it was only a few days away.
Despite the lack of snow, it was still bitterly cold outside. While the thought of drinking some nice hot chocolate afterwards was nice, there wasn't much to do outside to make the cold bearable. Sledding and such winter activities didn't work well without snow, and flying in this cold sounded like a terrible idea. Things here were just slow and quiet now and she wasn't used to it anymore. This was how things had been all the time growing up, but at school there was always something to do or someone to hang out with.
Val sighed and flopped back on her bed, letting some of the stuffed animals that lived there bounce and collapse on her. In theory she thought that she might be starting to get a little old for her stuffed friends. It would be her birthday again soon, after that she only had one more year before she'd be seventeen and come of age. That thought delighted and terrified her, she'd be able to cast magic and be expected to start her life. Ms. Bunhorn, being the closest, got the pleasure of experiencing some super tight anxious hugs. The old, one-eyed, stuffed jackelope didn't seem to mind.
There was a plan in place, or at least something that looked at least like the plan of a plan. She was excited about the vocation that she and Mr. Row had found for her to pursue, she just hoped she could pull off the grades she'd need. Then there was the matter of finding an apprenticeship after school. Hopefully it would work out. She really ought to tell her parents about that plan, she hadn't yet and wasn't quite sure why, but she hadn't.
All of the things that she needed to get done began to roll through Val's mind once more. There were a few assignments that she needed to finish up before break was done, there was the game to work on, there was also the Christmas pictures she'd taken to develop, along with a number of other minor tasks. None of them seemed terribly urgent at the moment though.
