It had happened late in the spring last year. Mab and Hilda had been walking a patrol together when the older prefect had abruptly asked if Mab wanted to run the Dueling Club when she was gone. On the spot, Mab had been torn between 'there is no chance in Faerie I will be caught dead running a club' and 'if I did, it would be Dueling Club'. Dueling club was as close Sonora got to having a club for her interests, and if it wasn't Mab keeping it going then who? After getting Hilda to admit she didn't have a back-up plan, Mab had reluctantly agreed to do it.
So Mab had made the advertisements (with better English this year than the last two) and posted them on the bulletin boards in the Cascade Hall and the MARS lobby. She'd coordinated with the club's advisor and reserved the Sports Room for Saturday mornings, early enough that it shouldn't conflict with Quidditch games later in the season. (Also, she was half-hoping the early timeslot would maybe make certain people decide they would rather spend their Saturday mornings sleeping in than in Mab's company.)
"Hello," she greeted the assembled group when the appointed hour arrived, her voice gruff and unfriendly. "I'm Mab. Hilda asked me to take over this club. We start with some footwork drills. Line up." The set she ran for them probably had more in common with the warm-ups for martial arts than for dueling, as she'd had classes in that more recently than she'd attended Dueling club, and she couldn't quite remember all that Hilda had done for this part, just that they started with drills to warm up.
After about fifteen minutes of that, she nodded. "Good. Now we will break down into dueling groups. Beginners, stand in that dueling circle. You'll be working with the Professor." She was glad Dueling club was one of the clubs with a more hands-on advisor. Overseeing barely competent magic users casting offensive spells at each other sounded like a recipe for disaster. "Everyone else, we'll be dueling on this circle. Line up, you and you," she pointed at two of the older students moving in the direction she'd just indicated, "You're up first. I'll ref."
OOC: Hilda was mine, too. I can write for her. I think the advisor is still the DADA Professor Brooding-Hawthorne, but I have not checked on that point, and so have left it open.

Valentine really, really, really, really.. really didn't want to drop out of any more clubs. But she also had prefect duties now on top of everything else and she was a fifth year with big tests coming up at the end of the year. Tests that might well determine her whole future. Fortunately, she had talked to Mr. Row a bit last year and gotten some things figured out. Partly because of the results of that, she really wanted to stay in the dueling club. But, she only had two clubs left that she could reasonably drop; dueling or debate. She ran the gaming club, so that wasn't really an option although it would free up the most time in her schedule. She had reasons for staying with dueling and her girlfriend, Bonabelle, ran the debate club and she really, really hated to abandon her like that. Fortunately Bonabelle was a super smart and logical and pretty, she would probably understand if Val could explain things the right way to her why she needed to callously drop debate in order to stay in the dueling club.
Hopefully, all would be fine and she wouldn't have to drop anything. Yes, it would all be just fine. These were her thoughts as she entered the MARS room for dueling club. Mab had taken over the club from Hilda and that was wonderful. She gave Mab her best smile in greeting, though didn't offer the Pecari a hug. She'd learned that Mab wasn't really much of a hugger. Val followed the instructions and found things were a little different, but still good under Mab's direction.
As they split into groups, Mab directed her to be one of the first into the ring. Ooo.. exciting, hopefully she remembered how this all worked properly. She presented herself in the circle and held her 13" Pear wand with veela hair core at the ready after bowing appropriately to her opponent. She gave them a smile and took up what she hoped was close enough to proper dueling posture after not doing this all summer long. "Ready when you are," she announced planning on casting the standard Protego shield at her opponent's first move. See what they have to start things off.
