Asking for a friend [Theo] by Valentine Duell

Valentine stood in front of a bench in the gardens, contemplating it. This was the spot where she'd agreed to date Stanley, and it seemed a little odd to her given the nature of her current mission. That had turned out... less than ideal, but not disastrous. She hoped her present endeavor had better results though. She liked the gardens well enough, but hadn't gotten out here nearly as much as she had since she ruthlessly abandoned the gardening club in the great club purge. The garden itself was also not the reason she was here. She was out here to find a Pecari, a specific Pecari. Her mission was to find Theo and see if he had any interest in asking Lavender to the ball.

He was one of two possibilities that Lavender had decided upon. With the way things were going, she thought Theo might work the best, but she was playing this all by ear by this point and wondered if it was all spinning wildly out of control. Anyway, with the addition of Stanley and Wally to Bonabelle and herself, Theo seemed like the natural one to go to for Lavender. He already hung out with the boys some and hopefully that would help everything just go lovely. She really wanted the ball to be special and perfect, it was the only one she would have.

Upon turning away from the bench, she spotted her quarry. She smiled cheerily, waved and made her way towards him. "Hi Theo!" She greeted him. "I saw you had put up a poster in the library looking for a date for the ball. Have you found anyone yet?"

I can be a friend by Theo Spurn

Generally, being a Pecari was a very good thing. Theo felt it suited him much better than anywhere that expected him to be quiet. It also had an Anya and a Stanley. Teppenpaw was good now because it had a Tommy, but he would have had to wait a long time for that. Even though Crotalus had a Wally, that was a definite 'no.' Anyway, Pecari was mostly good. He could be loud when he felt like being loud, and could cocoon himself in his room when he didn't feel like dealing with everyone else's loud. The stair rule was stupid, but that was true in every house.

The one downside of the common room was the location. It involved venturing into the outside world, whether he was ready to or not. Theo was not a big fan of the outdoors. It was often wet or sticky or dirty, and the degree to which it was going to be those things was highly variable.

He stepped out of Pecari, shoulders hunched, though they gradually unhunched as he discovered the day to be a Not Horrible one. Still, he scurried towards school with much more sense of purpose than he usually moved with. He was most of the way there (it wasn't far, after all), when Valentine started walking towards Pecari and deliberately got in his way, neither of which she had any business doing. Except that she wanted to talk to him. Oh.

"Yes," he answered, when she asked if he had had any replies to his poster. "And you already have like... four dates," he pointed out.

Friends are good. by Valentine Duell

Noticing that Theo seemed to be in a bit of a hurry, Val shifted aside as to walk with him back towards the school. She smiled a little at his comment. "I only have two." She said lightly mirthful with a smile, "One of my dates also has another date." She was relatively sure on that front. Bonabelle was going to talk to Stanley a little more in depth about the whole thing at some point, and she hadn't heard whether that had actually happened or not by now. The outcome of that conversation may change things. "But," she added, "I'm not looking for any more for myself."

Valentine had considered what would be a good tactic to explain this situation, and hadn't come up with a good answer. So, she just delved in. "I'm going with Bonabelle and Wally. Bonabelle is going with me and Stanley." She let out a small sigh, "I thought I would see if you had any interest in going with Lavender. I'm not sure what Tommy and Rosalyn will be doing, but then it wouldn't be to weird for you and Lavender to hang out with Wally, Stanley, Boanbelle and me at the ball itself." This was getting a little convoluted. She knew this, and trying to explain things didn't make it any simpler.

"If you already have something planned though, that's okay." She had been sort of hoping Theo would work out just because that would make the social circle... or whatever it was a little more familiar. But, if Theo had plans already, she had others as well.

Yes. I like mine. by Theo Spurn

Valentine had two dates but this wasn't about her but she wanted them to all hang out with her at the ball but they needed to do something to make it not weird. She was a confusing person.

"It's not weird for any of to hang out. We're friends. Well, you're not really my friend, and Bonabelle definitely isn't," he stated bluntly. He didn't mean anything by it, it was just a fact. Friends were people you spent extra time with, and who you got Christmas presents for, and Val and Bonabelle were not on that list for him. "But Wally and Stanley are my god-nephews, and Lavender is your friend.

"Tommy is going with Rosalyn," he informed her, because she had stated she didn't know what he and Rosalyn were doing. " They're dating. Since first year. He's usually boring when he's on dates. It's not really a group activity." He suspected Val's date was different seeing as it was already a group and she'd just invited him.

"So, what do you want?" he checked, because he wasn't sure that she had got to the point yet, or, if she had, she hadn't clearly labelled it. It would help if people just walked up and introduced the main point of why they wanted to talk to you but, unfortunately, everyone but him was weird and didn't think that was necessary.

Me to! by Valentine Duell

Talking with Theo could sometimes be confusing. Valentine really needed to remember that. It wasn't weird for them to hang out because they were friends except for her and Bonabelle? She felt a little hurt that Theo didn't think she was his friend, had she done something to make him dislike her? She couldn't think of anything. The extra insistence that he but on the idea that Bonabelle definitely wasn't his friend hurt a bit as well. She really wanted to rally to her girlfriend's defense, but... in Theo's defense, there were rare times when Bonabelle wasn't exactly a 'people' person. Val thought she was getting better though.

Then Theo stated a fact that as far as she knew, everyone in the school was aware of about Tommy and Rosalyn. "No..." she started, in an attempt to clarify things, "I knew they were dating and were going to the ball. I just meant I wasn't sure what they would be doing at the ball, if they would want to hang out as well or not. From what you're saying, they'll just do their own thing." She could see that easily. Tommy and Ros were a very close couple.

Val figured Theo must have missed the question when she'd asked if he wanted to go with Lavender to the ball since he asked. "I wanted to know if you wanted to take Lavender to the ball." She stated again, she'd thought it'd been clear enough, but maybe not.

Well, enjoy them by Theo Spurn

Did he want to take Lavender to the ball? Was he related to her? He couldn’t remember. He was pretty sure he was related to some fancy-schmancy people but they were all boring so he didn’t keep track. Anyway, it was irrelevant.

“She didn’t reply to the poster,” he pointed out. If people wanted to go to the ball with him, there had been a very clear and direct route for them to achieve that. Lavender had not done so. He supposed she still technically could apply because he wasn’t sure he had taken the poster down… After it had stopped being relevant it had just mentally ceased to exist. He should probably remove it because it would be awkward if other people applied now. “It’s closed now,” he informed Valentine. “Connie applied. So, I’m going with Connie. Also, she likes talking about fabric textures and has excellent references,” he added, not feeling that mere existence was a fair tribute to Connie’s many benefits as a human.

“Maybe she can just go with you seeing as you’re going with a lot of people?” he suggested. If Valentine wanted Lavender to be able to hang out with her without it being awkward she should just do that and not be awkward about it. Problem solved.

I do very much by Valentine Duell

Theo was right, Lavender hadn't replied to the poster. She was pretty sure that Lavender didn't want to apply for a position of ball date, she wanted to be asked to the ball. But that all sounded like it was largely irrelevant at this point, Theo had decided upon Connie. That was fine.

Valentine nodded and smiled despite her disappointment. "It sounds like you've found a good match, I hope you have fun," she responded honestly. "Maybe it will come to that," she continued discussing Theo's final suggestion, "But she would really like a date of her own. I'm not out of options yet for her though, so I'd better go see what I can do before anyone else gets taken." She thought about offering Theo a quick, friendly hug before heading off, but her coat wasn't particularly fuzzy and she didn't think that Theo would enjoy it very much if he even decided to take her up on the offer.

"I'll have to continue my quest elsewhere," she said with a mirthful smile, "I'll see you later!" Val gave a wave and headed off towards the school. Now she would just need to find Graham and hope for better luck. She really wanted to help out Lavender.. and maybe atone for still lingering guilt she felt from their conversation.
