Hex defense [Intermediate DADA] by Isis Carter-Xavier

“Hello everyone, let’s get started,” Isis called over the already quelling sounds of teenage chatter. The intermediates could be rambunctious, certainly, but by this time of year, they had gotten into a good routine. Most students could tell from Isis’s body language - and of course, if they looked at the clock - when it was time to settle down.

“So today we’re going to be working quite literally with the title of the class and talk a bit about hex-deflection,” she began. As she went, appropriate buzz words appeared in notation on the chalk board behind her. “One of the most common spells under this category uses the incantation Salvio hexia. Allow me to demonstrate.”

Isis raised her wand in her dominant hand and held her other hand raised, palm facing outward. It was a gesture of peace, one that, wandless, resonated with her in a different manner, from a different lifetime. As she recited the incantation, she lowered the wand in a downward and slightly diagonal motion, and a barely visible haze followed its tip.

“This spell will create a safe area behind it and can be used around a perimeter to completely defend against dark magic for a specific area,” Isis went on. “Today, you just need to practice the motion and incantation to create a protective field in front of you. The visible haze is the key to knowing you have succeeded. After you feel confident that you’re protected, partner up and test your deflective spells. Nothing crazy - stick to twitchy-ears jinxes and things of that nature. As homework, just a short, one-foot parchment essay on practical applications of Salvio hexio. Bullet points are acceptable, and chapter 6 of your textbook is an excellent resource for further information. Just be sure you cite what you borrow. Alright, have at it!”

Neat! by Billy Cobb

Out of all of the classroom based classes that Billy had to endure, DADA was the most bearable one. It was without a doubt one of the more exciting ones anyway. Which, at times, wasn't saying much. Still it was one that he didn't wait until the very last minute to slink into the room. He wondered if they'd be practicing dueling, or about some of the nastier creatures that lived in the magical world. He'd need to know all about them once he was a world famous global explorer and traveler.

Once Professor Carter-Xavier started teaching, he contemplated a bit about how to feel about the topic of the day. On one hand, it seemed to be almost like a charms class, just practicing casting a spell. On the other hand, they would get to shoot each other with jinxes! He decided it might be fun, assuming he found himself a good partner. Plus, he also didn't have to stay sitting in a chair the whole time! This class was looking up the more he thought about it. Maybe he should try thinking about things more often? Nah, that sounded boring.

Hopping to his feet the moment he was allowed to, Billy looked around to see who his options for partner were. This was another time when he was glad that Iris wasn't here, but sad that Ray wasn't. Ray could have made this super fun. Oh well. He spotted someone who hadn't found a partner yet, and without really giving them an option, addressed them. "Hey! How's it going? Ready to give this a try?" He glanced back over at the board where the professor had put some notes, then held up his hand and slashed vigorously downward while nearly shouting, "Salvio hexio!". He thought there had been a very thinn wisp of haze from his wand, but it'd disappeared during the movement. "Hmm.... that didn't look quite right, did it?"

Practice makes perfect by Flora Wilkins

Of all the classes she had, she had been looking forward to to DADA the most. The subject just seemed to mesh with her feisty, adventurous personality.
She concentrated on what the Professor was saying. She had read the theory, but that wasn’t much use unless she was able to actually cast the spell. Her blue eyes carefully watched, as the teacher demonstrated, and the class started to follow. She pulled out of her wand.
She copied the teachers movements exactly, and said the incantation clearly. Nothing happened.
Her mother’s voice floated around in her head for a moment. ‘Be confident while casting spells. You should will it to happen. Let’s put it this way. Witches and Wizards aren’t surprised when they manage to cast a spell.’
Okay. She could do this. She tried again, once again following the wand movement, and saying the incantation. This time a small wisp shot out of her wand, lingered for a moment, then dissipated. She let out a noise between a snarl and a growl. Why couldn’t she do this properly!?
She closed her eyes and took a deep breath. She opened her bright agate blue eyes once again, and traced the movement through the air with her wand. ‘Salvia Hexia’, she said, concentrating hard on letting her magic flow out.
And lo and behold, it worked! She barely restrained herself from punching the air with her fist and letting out a whoop, but managed with a wide grin.

Welcome by Selina Skies

Hi Flora,

Welcome to Sonora! This is an out of character post to share some information with you about how the site works.

Flora is an incoming first year. From her point of view, term begins on September 1st. We will start role-playing that year on January 14th. That means Flora isn't classes or at events that are happening on the main boards yet. However, so our new first years feel welcome and have a chance to start posting right away, we have set up orientation meetings for them on the sandbox. You can find a thread to reply to here.

Please check the junk mail folder of your email, and make sure that you are receiving emails from sonora.chairs@gmail.com. We will send out lots of information to new first years to help you get settled.

Thanks :)
