Seeking sight [Giselle] by Nevaeh Reed

Two feet and four paws echoed through Sonora’s mostly empty hallways, although not quite in the order these particular feet and paws often went places. It was the human who led the dog, an unusual switch from the norm.

But despite the time away, Nevaeh did not really need guidance from Scout through this place. It was still familiar, the map burned into her mind’s eye where her real eyes failed. She hadn’t spent as much time in this particular classroom, but she remembered the configuration of the school well enough to make it there with relative ease.

In truth, she was a little nervous. She didn’t know Giselle Duell personally, but Isis had recommended she come and talk to the woman. Nevaeh was always a little sceptical of pretty much anything Isis said, but Nathan echoed the sentiment, and Nevaeh put a little more confidence into her stepfather’s word than her mother’s, so she decided to give it a shot.

If what Isis said about Giselle’s magic was true, well… It would be worth the awkward conversation.

The Aladren alumna reached the doorway she sought and gave Scout’s harness a light tug to tell him this was where she wanted to stop. She knocked lightly on the door frame as she came in. “Hi, Giselle?” she called. With her limited vision - her blindness was not complete, but her vision was minimal enough to be considered blind - she could see motion, so she knew someone was in the Divinations classroom, so she just hoped it was the professor she was looking for. “My name’s Nevaeh Reed. The Carter-Xaviers are my parents,” she went on, noting mildly how weird that was to say out loud, since Isis had tried to keep that as hidden as possible when Nevaeh was a student. “And they told me I should talk to you about a magical method you use to see? I’m legally blind, so I was just sort of wondering what you could tell me about your approach.”

Giselle Duell

Giselle was back at Sonora. The break had gone very nicely she though, although she didn't really have a lot to compare it to. Her past few 'breaks' hadn't been, and she wasn't thinking about them anymore. That was the past and the past couldn't affect her anymore. She was here now, she was a professor at a respectable school, she was doing fine. Her past was behind her. So, she was now getting ready for the new term of the school year. She was checking lesson plans and supplies and cursing to herself silently with what this term held. This would be a disaster and she'd be fired.

Before the train of thought could go much farther, there was a soft knock at the door and Giselle nearly jumped. Who was coming to see her now? Was it Selina? No she didn't recognize the voice, it was a woman's voice. Had someone from Greece found her? It was far to late by now, but her wand was in her hand and she'd scanned the doorway. It was a young woman, probably about her own age. She didn't seem hostile... yet.

As the woman talked, Giselle relaxed just a bit more. Neveah's story made more sense than someone tracking her down and gaining entry to the school grounds from Greece. Isis had also mentioned that she had a blind daughter. Giselle suddenly realized that she may just be talking to someone looking for help, and she was awful close to a fighting stance. "Oh, sorry." She quickly shifted to a more normal standing position, "It's nice to meet you, Nevaeh." She did her best to smile, then considered the minor absurdity of it. You could hear a smile in someone's voice, but... what was the saying about 'the blind leading the blind?'

"Please, come in. Have a seat," she swished her wand around the room, just to make sure. Yes, everything was still where it was supposed to be, good. "There's a chair three paces in front of you." She strolled around her desk to her files. Where had she stashed that lesson? "I can try." She answered hopefully. She finally located her notes from the beginner class she had tried to teach this to as well, and scanned over them again with her wand. "I actually ran an experiment on this, Professor Skies asked me to teach something to the beginner class and so I though this is what I would teach them." She sighed audibly. "It got mixed results, and I haven't quite been able to pinpoint any sort of common problem yet." Val hadn't been able to get it which had been a bit surprising, her dad developed it after all.

"My brother developed this for other reasons, then modified it a bit to work for me." She demonstrated the wand movement, mostly out of habit at this point. "It is primarily just a circular motion with the tip of the wand, you just need to be sure to complete the circle. The incantation is "mentis imago". If all goes well, it should project a colorless image into your mind's eye of whatever was defined by the circle you drew with your wand." She smiled again, "Give it a try."

Nevaeh Reed

....Sure. by Nevaeh Reed

While Nevaeh didn’t often like to be directed, there was something refreshing about getting directional advice from someone like her. It was meant genuinely and spoken plainly, without a hint of pity or hero-complex. Nevaeh took three paces and seated herself easily in the chair Giselle had indicated.

She listened carefully to each and every detail Giselle could provide, soaking in the instructions as best as she could, yet also finding herself growing more and more nervous. What if it didn’t work? Well, nothing would change, then. But what if it did? Then everything would change. Her left hand hung beside her, and soon, offering knowing comfort, she felt fur, then a wet nose, as Scout offered his very best nuzzle.

“Okay,” she said slowly, producing her wand from her pocket with her right hand, the dominant one. “Mentis imago,” she enchanted, carefully maneuvering her wand, tracing a circle in the air.

There was a flash, and her head swam with a bright white light. Then, the images changed. The color drained away, and detail took its place. More focused, more real than Nevaeh had ever seen. She felt immediately dizzy and overwhelmed, and even though the input was not coming from her eyes, she felt an ache in them, confused by their now-complete uselessness.

Nevaeh gasped sharply, and her head jerked back slightly. The sensory overload was too much and occupied all of her thoughts, so she did not even notice the fact that her eyes were watering. Was she crying? She didn’t know. She stood up slowly and took a few tender steps, but the spell was fading, and she didn’t know how to sustain it. Her weak eyes regained control slowly, the definition fuzzing out and fading back into color.

When her sight returned to its usual level of hardly there, she turned back in the direction she knew Giselle to be. “That was… incredible,” she breathed. “How do I sustain the spell? How often do you have to recast?”

Someone sounds suspicious by Giselle Duell

Nevaeh had gotten a reaction! Wordlessly Giselle recast the spell herself and caught the woman rising to her feet. She stood herself in case Nevaeh needed her for anything. There had been a few successes in the beginners class, but she suspected from the woman's reaction that Nevaeh had much more success. This was good, she was helping someone... in a different way than just educating students as she had been for the past few months. That had felt good, like she was accomplishing something, being a productive member of society. This felt different though, it felt more... real? More immediate? More... something.

She was smiling as she stepped around her desk. Another cast updated her image again, she looked sad now. Had it not worked out right? Had it somehow hurt her? She couldn't do anything right, could she? The smile fell from her lips as a cold feeling sunk into the pit of her stomach, it only lasted a moment until Nevaeh voice her response to the experience. The wave of relief that washed over Giselle was nearly overwhelming. She leaned back against her desk and released the breath she had been holding.

"I'm glad it worked for you." She responded with some obvious relief in her own voice. There were quite a few questions she wanted to ask Nevaeh, but answering her questions should come first. "Practice," was her initial response, "It's more of a mental exercise though than spell work. The spell just transfers that instantaneous image into your mind, like a muggle photograph that doesn't move." She sighed at the thought of Andrew and his strange toys. "It is just a matter of how long you can retain the image in your mind, how much you can remember once the magic has done it's job." She paused just a moment before answering her next question with just a touch of amusement, "I recast it whenever I want to. But," she continued with a little more seriousness, "I've been doing this for quite a few years now. I've gotten pretty good at holding onto that image. Recasting it also gets much easier once you can do it non-vocally, but again that takes time and practice. I can do it without my wand at this point, but.." she hesitated for a moment, "The image is really terrible, but better than nothing."

Now it was time to turn the tables, "How about you though? What all did you see? How clear was the image?" This was exciting! She would have to get all of this down into her notes later.
