Letter home by Valentine Duell

Valentine snuggled into one of the comfy chairs in the common room with a sheet of paper and her quill. It was well past time to write home, where to begin? At the beginning, orientation?

Dear Mama and Papa,
I arrived safely here at Sonora! The wagon ride was just as exciting as you said it was going to be! We landed and got to do a first-year orientation. Professor Wright told us some of the things about the school and then we got to mingle! I met a great girl, Bonabelle, Bonny, Row. She's super smart and is the Guidance Councilor's niece. She wants to start up a debate club, if there isn't one already, so we can figure out how to have productive arguments. I may have to sign up for that one. After we talked for a bit, Professor Wright took us all on a tour. This place is huge and complicated. The tour ended at the Cascade Hall for the opening feast.

This was going to be the bit they really wanted to know about. The sorting. She looked around her common room, it was already starting to feel a bit like home. It had been Papa's home a long time ago. Hopefully Mama wasn't to sad that she didn't get into Crotalus. Val wondered if this is what it looked like ages ago when Papa was here, or if it had changed a lot.

All of us first-years lined up for the sorting and dunked our badges into the potion. Mine came out yellow, I was sorted into Teppenpaw! Sorry Mama, please don't be to sad. I sat at the Teppenpaw table and the headmaster gave a short speech and said there was going to be a charity fair at the end of the year. That should be fun! Then I got to talk to one of the other first-year Teppenpaws, Philippe Delanche. He has two older sisters in the school, one in seventh-year and the other in third! He's excited to be here as well. We got to meet our head of house, Professor Xavier. He also teaches Herbology and is really nice. He showed us to the Teppenpaw area of the school. Here's a quick doodle of the room Papa, has it changed much since you were here?

Val tried to draw out the main features of the room around her. It wasn't a great drawing, she may need to find an art club to join. Hopefully Papa would recognize it well enough to let her know if anything had changed.

Anyway, it looks like I'm the only Teppenpaw girl this year, so no roommate for me. You know I was looking forward to having one, but I guess I will have to make friends elsewhere. Bonny got sorted into Aladren, but we'll get to see each other lots in classes and clubs. I'm going to get signed up for Quidditch, and I've heard rumors that there is a gaming club! I'll keep you posted on that front.

Well, that's about all the news I have for you now. I'll let you know all about the teachers once I learn some more about them. Maybe some of them taught when you were here! Love you both!

Valentine

Val looked over the letter again and then sealed it up for mailing. She pulled herself out of the comfy chair and and moved towards the door to the rest of the school when she stopped abruptly. Where were the owls again? They had been on the tour, but had they been after the MARS rooms or near the potions classroom? That didn't sound right. She turned to one of her fellow Teppenpaws that was in the common room, "Excuse me." She said with apologetically pleading eyes, "I'm sorry, but where are the owls for sending letters?"
