Drake O'Leary

September 15, 2006 1:17 AM
Before the first and second year students arrived, Drake placed a single piece of parchment on each student's desk. Each of which stated one of four colors - red, blue, yellow, and green. Once finished, a wave of his wand caused the word to vanish from each paper.

As students entered the classroom, Drake announced, "Do not touch the parchement on your desk, as it serves a purpose for this lesson."

He strode to the front of the room, his black robes flowing out causing his form to look more impressive than it actually was. Once there, he turned suddenly to face the students, his robes whipping around with him.

After the students were seated, he started his lecture, "Each of the pieces of parchment contains a word. This is a two part lesson. First, you must master the spell to make the word appear. After doing so, you must find the other students that have the same word. This will be your group for the next lesson."

"To reveal the ink, we use the spell Aparecium. To do so, flick your wand like so," Drake lectured with a twist of his wrist, "while stating firmly 'Aparecio.' This spell will serve the basis for more advanced magic used to reveal hidden magic, which can be quite dangerous. Begin."

OOC: You can have any color that you want, but please try to vary. I don't want to see everyone having red for example. Have fun!

Caedence Redoak

September 15, 2006 6:58 PM
Caedence smirked as she took her seat. Defence against the dark arts! She'd been waiting all year for this. She'd heard many things about O'Leary, mostly fed by the grapevine. Once such rumor was that his detentions were so horrible that students had a breakdown. So, it was with mixed curiosity and general respect, that Caedence observed the infamous teacher.

He seemed much as the rumors descibed him; a crimson haired vampire. HE was very much an ominous figure adn she shuddered with the though of ever making him mad. She couldn't help muttering, "i vant to suck your blahd!" in a low tone meant to reach only her ears before the teacher spoke. His words stopped all mischevious intentions that she had. All she could do was watch him. He had a sort of air that commanded authority and gave a great threat to whomsoever wanted to usurp said authority.

She looked at her own piece of parchment. Used to the muggle version of dissapearing words, she looked at it multiple ways to see if the letters were poorly hidden. That was the way she'd always solved those words that could 'only' be solved with the translucent red paper. She found that, despite her attempts, she couldn't see it withought magical help. So, she picked up her wand.

"Appericio" she said with an air of confedence. She glared at the blank parchent that met her words. "Aw come on !" she scolded her paper. After a pause for though, she realized she said the spell wrong and didn't bother to move her hand. With an overdramatic flick, she said "Apparecio!" She gave a yelp when a giant letter 'E' appeared on her paper. Clearing her throat, she wiped the page as if to smear the letter off. It worked, partially. The letter 'e' was in smaller case in the middle. "Apparecio" seh repeated with a flick of the wand. The letters 'y,l,o' appeared in their proper places. A few more trys got the whole word, yellow, to appear. Hearing someone give a frusterated sigh next to her she turned and said, "Just dont get mad. You might blow up the paper"\n\n

Michael Tallow

September 16, 2006 4:14 AM
Michael was a fair hand when it came to wandwork. Transfiguration was by far his better subject, as the spells required an intense focus. He was long used to wrapping his thoughts around one idea at a time. Concentration was key; that he was highly obsessive when it came to things he concentrated on helped quite a bit in that regard. One might think that such a mind might also be somewhat talented at other spells. But one would also then be falling prey to the normaly reasonable premise that with such possible talent would also come an inherent interest.

Michael had no such interest. Especially when it came to Defense Against the Dark Arts. Michael had no intention of ever being in a situation or environment that would make necessary such training. He happened to value his life, and so was not of the habit of hunting down dark creatures or wizards. He was no hero; there was only the skin on his back to worry about. He'd save the hero business to others- to people like the ones who made up most of his house.

He did not like, however, to get failing grades. It bothered his pride and made his neck itch.

That was not to say that he was not above finding ways to circumvent a lesson's purpose- such as teaching him how to make invisible ink appear. Sure, Professor O'Leary claimed that the spell had a more lingering purpose other than its current chore, but Michael felt suspicious. The assignment had a distinctly 'creative' feel to it, and he was generally against creativity when it came to learning. He preferred the 'read a chapter of the text, watch the demonstration, and try not fail' approach as opposed to team building and cooperative education.

He gave his parchment a sour look and switched his wand to his left hand. "Aparecio," he commanded. The parchment did not comply. He tried again, this time actually moving his wrist with a slight twist. "Aparecio."

The parchment seemed to be ignoring him. Michael paused before launching a third assault and considered. Obviously, the parchment was charmed; there was a word there, written most likely in ink, that was now invisible. The ink, being physical in property, must therefore be charmed. Since it was charmed, then there was a spell currently attached to it. And the easiest way to end a charm was. . .

Michael's mouth slide sideways. Chances were in his favor that the charm, whatever it was, was not overly strong. He should be able to pull it off. He switched his wand to his right hand this time, the appendage more familiar with the remedy than the left was. "Finite Incantatum," he ordered confidently.

The parchment shuddered and then stilled. The word appeared all at once, and Michael leaned back into his chair, annoyed. "Green," he muttered with an agitated sigh. "I suppose I should be happy it's not brown. There's an unlucky color. . ."\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Elly Eriksson

September 16, 2006 5:45 AM
Elly headed down to her first defence against the dark arts lesson wondering what on earth this subject was all about. Naturally, there had been confusion about all the other subjects, but it was quite obvious that transfiguration and potions had their uses, care of magical creatures less so, but Elly had supposed it couldn’t hurt to know about magical creatures, in case you should ever come across one. Defence against the dark arts though? What did they expect – that an army of dark wizards was going to hunt them down and expect the students to fend for themselves? Ludicrous! This subject was also probably the main cause of accidents within the school – jinxes, duels and the like. All in all, the whole thing seemed a bit daft. Nevertheless, it did have the potential to be interesting.

Elly slunk into class, and took a seat on the front row. This was highly unusual, but Elly was still doing her best to avoid Caedence and that second year Pecari whose name she thought was Tallow. She put her book bag on the chair to her left to save a space for Meredith. She soon realised, however, that it really didn’t matter whom she sat next to on this occasion, as they were required to form a group based on the word concealed on the parchment in front of them. Great.

The parchment sat immobile on the desk in front of her, mocking her. Elly sighed. She’d barely been in a good mood since returning after the holidays. She shook her head to try and clear the bad mood cobwebs. Feeling better, she looked again at the page, willing the letters to appear of their own accord so she wouldn’t have to bother with the lesson. Obviously, that didn’t work. Sighing again, she retrieved her wand and waved it lazily, saying “Aparecio” a little half-heartedly. Unsurprisingly, that didn’t work, either. She shook her head again – this bad mood cloud really needed to lift.

“Okay,” she said to herself, “let’s do this. Aparacio!” Elly knew her wand work wasn’t the best – it was part of the reason she enjoyed potions so much (that, and she got to chat to Meredith all lesson). Therefore she was astounded to see three, so faint they were barely visible, letters reveal themselves on the parchment. She grinned, starting to feel a bit more like her usually cheerful self. “Red,” Elly read aloud. “Huh.”

O'Leary

September 16, 2006 2:10 PM
With a keen eye on the students, Drake watched to ensure that none cheated. Cheating would be unbeneficial for them, because it meant that they wouldn't be able to perform the next lesson properly. Yet, it seemed that cheating was inevitable.

Like the dark creature he seemed to be, Drake blended to the shadows before looming behind this paticular student.

With his deep voice and controlled tones, he said, "Did you really believe that I wouldn't notice? Now then, I believe I will take this and give you this-" Drake took the parchment with the word 'green' and gave Michael a new blank parchment, "so that you can try again the right way. Also, I want an essay written on why this spell could be important and how it could benefit you personally by next class. Oh, yes, and it for the length...twelve feet."

Drake wanted to sigh in frustration, but didn't. He wanted to know when they would learn that they came to school, took these classes to learn valuable lessons for their futures. In the case of Dark Arts, anyone could become involved or become a victim to, which is why they learned to defend against it, and sometimes even that wasn't enough.

Maybe making the lesson interesting had been a mistake. He looked over to his daughter, Briony. It had been her idea. She had pleaded with him til he agreed. Damn soft spot.\n\n

Briony O'Leary

September 16, 2006 2:20 PM
Entering the classroom, Briony quickly took a seat at the front. She loved watching her dad in action, knowing that he wasn't like this at home. Not many people really knew him like she did. Most just saw the omnimous figure, the crimson vampire, as some liked to call him. To her, he was just dad.

After his dark performance, they were able to begin their lesson. For Briony, it was a breeze. Being the DADA's daughter, nothing less would do. With a flick of her wrist and the proper prounciation, the word appeared boldly on her paper. Red.

Now, she just had to find someone with the same word. Pushing the dark red hair out of her eyes, she looked around the room. Finding someone might be harder than she thought. She approached a couple of students, but they all had yellow or green, not red.

She approached another student, who appeared to be finished.

"Excuse me, do you have the color 'red'?" She asked tentively.\n\n

Adam Brockert

September 17, 2006 4:40 PM
Defense was the scariest class that Adam had and Professor O'Leary was the scariest teacher. The only class and teacher who scared him more were flying and Coach Fox, however, he no longer took that class and would have nothing to do with either ever again.

Adam could see the necessity of Defense. While there was no way he'd ever be an Auror or hunt down dangerous creature,he needed to protect himself from them in an emergency. Though he'd probably end up panicking in taking off in that situation anyway, even if he was way more afraid of people than creatures. Adam would far rather have been mauled to death than have to live with someone tormenting him.

He took a seat in the back, where Professor O'Leary wouldn't take notice of him, and neither would his classmates. Adam's anxiety increased about a billion times over when the professor stated that this (fairly harmless) lesson would be followed up by one involving groups . Groups were even more terrifying than partners. Adam wasn't even sure he was capable of group work. He feared he'd panic with that many people around them and have an attack again. Then people would laugh at him. And besides, what if he ended up in a group with people who were really mean to him? Adam shuddered at the thought. It wasn't as though people like him were well liked at Sonora. And it would be a lot of people in the group too, since there were only four groups total, and he figured the groups would be fairly even.

Unenthusiastically, he waved his wand over the paper, saying the spell. The first few times, Adam didn't get any result. He could handle that, he didn't expect to get it right away.
Finally, on the fifth try, Adam could faintly make out four letters. The word had barely flickered on the paper, but he knew that only one of the colors named had four letters in it. Adam was in the blue group. Hopefully either Ginger or Pepper or both would be in the same one.He wasn't sure he could make it alone. He really didn't think he could handle it.

Adam turned back to the parchment and began trying to make the words appear completely. Obviously, he wasn't going to get up and look for other members of the blue group. That would involve going up and speaking to his classmates, who might tease him for one reason or another. And with his luck, Adam would get stuck working with the worst possible people.

Danae Dupree

September 17, 2006 8:51 PM
Danae sighed as she entered the Dark Arts classroom. This really wasn't a class that she wanted to take. She didn't want to learn how to defend herself against the Dark Arts. She didn't want to have to deal with the Crimson Vampire, but yet here she was.

Once seated, she listened to the omnimous tones of the professor describing their assignment. She tried hard not to roll her eyes. What was the point of learning how to reveal words on paper? Big deal.

Wanting to look like the angel, she appeared to be, Danae took out her wand and began to say the appropriate word. After several tries, the word still wouldn't appear. Frustrated, she gave a loud sigh. She really wished they were doing something more interesting.

A moment after she had sighed, she heard a voice next to her say, 'Just don't get mad. You might blow up the paper.' She quickly arranged her face into the sweetest expression and turned to the voice.

"Oh, I'm not mad, just a little frustrated," she answered softly. "My name's Danae. How did you get your word to appear so quickly?"\n\n

Caedence sighed at the girl. Mad and frustrated were the same in ceadence's mind. None the less, the girl at least was asking for help. CAedence scrutenized her paper, just to make sure. Then she touched it. Realising that there was just no way around the spell, she took a deep breath.

"Well, you see, first you have to want to do the spell. With Proffeser Vampire here, I know it's tough," Was that a joke? with a mental shrug, she continued, "Then, just sort of think 'I want the words!' you know? Just want them to appear. And say the spell with confidence. Like a broom, it can tell when you want it to work. Just dont get angry, I once blew up my cauldron trying to levatate it."\n\n

Elly

September 18, 2006 3:14 AM
"Excuse me, do you have the color 'red'?"

Elly peered around in her seat to see who had spoken.

“Oh, hi!” she said cheerfully to the other girl. “Yes, Red.” Elly said pointing at her parchment where the word was still only noticeable if you knew what to look for. Realising this, Elly quickly turned the paper over, hoping that this girl (who looked astoundingly similar to their professor) wouldn’t judge her by her shoddy spell work.

“I’m Elly Eriksson,” she said, smiling and extending her hand to the other ‘red’ student. “I’m in Pecari,” she added, though after she said it wished she hadn’t. It wasn’t that she was ashamed of being in Pecari; in fact she quite liked her house. It was just that she’d never introduced herself as belonging to any particular house before. It felt odd, especially as she was inadvertently associating herself with Tallow and Morgaine.

She smiled again at the other girl before peering round the classroom. “So who else is red?” Elly asked, more to herself than to anyone else.

Michael Tallow

September 20, 2006 7:31 AM
Michael absolutely hated to have things snatched away from him. It peeved him to no end; he found the behavior invasive and rude, and completely within the domain of adult behavior. Ie: the sort of behavior that said in proud letters: I am an Adult. I am Superior. I am better and bigger and there is Nothing you can do about it. He had already made up his mind that he did not like Professor O'Leary. The way in which his parchment was then snatched only further cemented this feeling.

He felt the compulsion to answer to the unspoken opinion his professor's manner seemed to say; Michael fought it down. What was the point saying anything? Even though the class's title was Defense Against the Dark Arts, it was still a class, so that meant: it's the Professor's Way or a million feet of parchment. Much like the twelve he was now stuck with.

Well, it wouldn't be the first time he'd been stuck with essay writing as a punishment. He didn't like to write, felt reading was inconvenient, but he took these supposed punishments as challenges. Michael would certainly write all twelve feet required; he would also write about why the stupid spell was important. But he would make it as boring and as dull and as completely brainless as possible.

Without plagiarizing, of course.

Michael purposely kept his mouth shut and gave the new piece of parchment on his desk a foul expression. It helped that he now knew that the hidden word was a color of some sort. It made the probable result easier to visualize. And visualize he did; thinking back to the past year's tutoring, he remembered his oldest brother sharing how he managed to master new spells.

"Picture what should happen in your head," Danny had said. "Picture exactly what the spell should do and what should happen. And then do it. Easy as pumpkin pie."

Michael sometimes wished his older brothers were quite so talented. They made everything sound far easier than it was. Still though, he clenched his jaw and visualized: he saw the words hidden in the parchment, saw the spell unbinding them, and saw the words appear.

"Aparecio," he said, and his eyes involuntarily widened. The word 'green' appeared yet again, faintly at first and then boldly as the spell rooted itself through. "What do you know. . .it actually worked."

He ignored the satisfaction that welled just as equally as involuntarily from the spell's completion. He didn't care about things like that after all. He got the same answer both times; who cared about how he got there? If the easy way works, then use it. That was his opinion, and O'Leary could stuff it otherwise.

Grail Markner

September 20, 2006 9:31 PM
Grail walked into the depressing DADA room with the same mood as the walls. Depressing. Stupid Alice and her depressing letter. Why did her sister have to come to her for help? Alice hated Grail. And the feeling was so mutual. At least this was keeping the Alice in Grail's head at bay, even if she couldn't say the same about the mini Chali and Libby. She reached inside the black hoodie and touched the note she was finally able to decipher.

Sitting down and trying to get her mind of the letter, she listened to the equally depressing teacher. Joy. Dead-like, she repeated sfter the teacher's wand movement, whispering the word to the spell. After she was done, she looked down at the paper, and flickered her wand up.

"Aparecio," she muttered, flicking the wand in the right way. Nothing changed. Riiiight, enthusiasm. She sighed.

"Deadpan..." Libby mocked.

"Go away," she muttered softly aloud, and tried to summon every little bit of "enthusiasm" she could get. Lightly, she reflicked the wand. "Aparecio," she said in an overly-fake enthusiastic voice, trying to think happy thoughts. Riight...

And the paper said: B...ue. She guessed blue. Fine then. Just the way she felt right now?

"How about Gray?" Libby giggled.

"Go away!" she said this time, louder. Then stopped. Oh no, did she say that too loud? Would the people around her think she was crazy? Was she crazy? Oh no, oh no! She began shaking and turned quickly to the person behind
"DoYouHaveBlue?" she asked quickly, shaking still. Wonering if this person heard her, which is why her eyes were squeezed shut when she turned.

"God, you're so stupid!" Chali laughed manaically.

"Go away..." she whimpered again, opening her eyes and shaking harder.\n\n

Briony

September 21, 2006 6:43 PM
Briony gave a wide grin when the girl said red.

"I have red too," she said, showing her own parchment where the word was boldly displayed.

Quickly, she learned the girl's name was Elly and she was in Pecari. She supposed that it would be a good idea to introduce herself, except that once she did, Elly might make the connection with her last name. Not that many people had crimson red hair.

"I'm Briony O'Leary. My House is Teppenpaw," she told the other girl. She looked around the room, "I don't know who else is red."

Realizing that Elly had been talking to herself, Briony blushed slightly at having answered her. Why was she such a dork sometimes?\n\n

Danae

September 21, 2006 6:55 PM
Danae plastered a smile on her face after the girl had sighed at her. She hated the way the girl acted like she was just a brainless twit. Did she not know who she was? She was Danae Dupree, one of a long line of pureblood wizards with all the right connections. They were known around the world by anyone that was anyone. Of course, that must explain it. This girl was no one.

Not feeling a bit sorry for her, Danae decided this girl would be perfect for her little experiment. She needed to find someone that was naive and gullible. The perfect way to begin of course was through flattery.

"Oh, you're so right! I bet you'll get the best grade in this class," Danae gushed. "I'm going to try again."

Turning back to her parchment, Danae pointed her wand once more at it and in her 'I'm better than you' voice, which contained the most confidence, she stated clearly, "Apercio!"

Slowly, and still very light, the word appeared. Yellow. She looked toward the other girl's parchment. Yellow.

"Hey, look, I have Yellow too. We get to be in a group together," she smiling. \n\n

Eavan Valentine

September 27, 2006 2:41 PM
Eavan sat in a random seat in class. Not near the front because she couldn't people watch, and not near the back becausr then she could see the professor properly and it was harder for her to concentrate. So somewhere near the middle it was.

She got out her wand and began to roll it back and forth across the desk, trying toavoid the blank piece of paper sitting on it, and looked around. There was a girl not far away talking to herself...she could reember her name, but Eavan was sure she was a first year. Another, rather sallow looking boy was getting reprimanded by the vampire-like professor. MAybe she should star this before she gets 12 feet too.

Evan picked up her wand and tried to remember the wand movements, but couldn't. She glanced around her for a moment or two a the other practcing students and got both the movements and the incantation. Doing them as correctly as she could she stated the incantation clearly.

"Aparecio!"

Nothing happened at first, but then, very faintly, Eavan saw the barest bit of a word. It looked like green, but just to make sure, Eavan tried the spell again. This time the words shown in relative brightness. "GREEN"

"Cool," Eavan said under her breath. It wasn't as hard as she had thought.

She glanced round the room again, trying to see who had a lso gotten green. The only paper she could see with "Green" written on it was the boy who had gotten yelled at for cheating. Well, she might as well...

"Hi, I'm Eavan. I noticed we both had green," She said brightly when she found her way to his seat.

Michael Tallow

September 28, 2006 9:06 AM
As he was aggravated and in a mood of general irritation, it really couldn't be taken personally that he reacted as he did. After all, it was only common sense that when a person was scowling and looking unapproachable that he then be left alone and unapproached. Apparently, this particular logic escaped the first year girl who all but bounced up to Michael's side. She even went so far as to introduce herself. The silly idiot.

"I'd compliment your observational skills, but as you missed my obvious body language, I'm going to hold back." His tone was too flat to be sarcastic, but the dryness managed to convey enough contempt that Michael felt suitably placated. He did not return the favor and introduce himself.

With his blue eyes centered on a corner far opposite of the room, he carelessly gestured to the open desk next to him. "You can sit there, but try to fight the urge to talk to me. I'm not interested in whatever-" He paused and switched his gaze to her robe's crest. Super: a Teppenpaw. She was probably going to start bawling and claiming mental distress just like that spazz Brockert always was. 'Cept, of course, that particular pansy was in Crotalus, so apparently not all the cry babies ended up in Teppenpaw.

"Whatever you might say- I don't care," he finally finished, and purposely set his jaw to rest on his palm, eyes back to their spot on the corner opposite. While the thought made no change in his expression, he did rather hope that she did not start crying. Something told Michael that his professor might not believe him innocent.

Whatever Eavan as expecting from the dejected boy in front of her it wasn' this. He didn't even try to be nice. Earl would have punched this boy in the face, but that's probably why he was in Crotalus and she was in the good-natured house of Teppenpaw.

Eavan's grin was all but gone now, replaced by a sort of scowl. Anyone who knew her would think this a strange thing., as she rarely ever actually scowled. But this boy didn't know her, and frankly, she didn't want to know him either.

She sat in the chair indicated by Mr. Sourpuss and gave a definitive and indifferent "Fine" before lapsing into silence and continuing her people watching, wondering who else was in her group. Hopefully someone she could talk to. She glanced at the boy again, who from now on would be Mr. Sourpuss in her head, and wished she were in a group with Gil. He's talk to her.\n\n

Echo Elms

September 28, 2006 10:54 PM
The parchment on the desk was Echo's first clue that things were going to be a little different today. He shuffled through his bookbag and pulled out his notebook and pen and waited. Professor O'Leary was quickly becoming his favorite teacher. There was something about him that inspired Echo to sit up straight and pay attention when he spoke. Maybe it was that he reminded him a little of Leonardo Idoya, but more so, and he was, therefore, terrified of the man. Still, terror and respect went together somehow he didn't understand and DADA was his best class. He took it very seriously.

Today's lecture was mad crazy short. He had only a few words of notes in his notebook: Ah-pair-ah-see-oh - color on paper - groups by color.

He pulled his wand out of its brown suade bag Elly had made for it over the holiday, and watched the other kids for a couple minutes. The girl a few desks over got it when she moved her wand like so. He practiced it.

"Aparacio," he said, trying to imitate Professor O'Leary's pronunciation. He said it again, and twitched the wand. The third try was the charm.

"Blue" was scrawled across his sheet.

The people he saw were reds, and Caedence was yellow (thank goodness it wasn't blue). Echo got up and started wandering from desk to desk glancing at peoples' sheets and holding his up and waving it questioningly. He stuck to the outsides of the class: the people on the sides, the people in front or in back. If he had to, he'd tackle the middle but the desks got more dense there and he might accidently trip over a bag or brush against someone's elbow or shoulder. He'd already had a recent accidental bump with someone this week in Astronomy. Creepy stuff.

Before he got there, though, there was one more kid in the back to check with. He really hoped the kid was a blue -- he was already getting the ticklers just thinking about going up the middle row -- but then kid was one of the second years. Maybe he wouldn't like working with a firstie. He walked over and waved his parchment at him uncertainly even though he could already see the other kid's paper said blue.

"Uh, you got blue too? I'm Echo."\n\n

Saul Pierce

September 28, 2006 11:25 PM
Saul had not made a good first impression on Drake O'Leary. Even if laughing at the man's overly serious delivery of the statement that fairies were dangerous hadn't put him on the professor's bad side, Saul was almost certain the man hadn't been amused by his answer that 'Tinkerbell in a bad mood' was an example of a dangerous fairy. Even if she was.

Things had not gotten much better in the last year and a half. Saul hadn't gotten a detention yet, quite, but he'd lost quite a lot of points for his House, rarely gained any, and overall stood out as one of the worst DADA students in the class, simply because he wasn't able to keep his mouth shut when he should. It was horrible having at teacher with zero sense of humor. He liked the practical lessons because, in those, he at least had a chance of not getting himself into trouble.

Lessons like this one were the only way he kept himself from failing the class. He was good with the wandwork and stuff, it was during the discussions that he managed to make himself look like a dunce. That's what happened when the room itself was imbued with enough Dark Arts to suck up every drop of humor and leave all of his answers sounding stupid and childish. Or maybe it wasn't the room, it might be an anti-humor field that the professor generated that drained all fun within a twenty foot radius of him.

Taking out his wand, Saul looked down at the blank seeming parchment, gave it a stern look, then flicked his wand with a sharp twitch of his wrist and said firmly, "Aparecio."

A very faint smudge appeared in the middle of the page, neither dark nor distinct enough to make out any individual letters. He was on the right track though, and a second, louder, "Aparecio!" accompanied by another quick flick brought it out into legibility.

Green.

Well, that was hardly exciting. It couldn't have been a fortune cookie saying or anything, could it? Just . . . green.

Bored, he sat back in his seat and looked around the room. He was one of the first people done. In any other class, he would have been happy about that and started talking with his neighbors, but O'Dreary didn't like talking, and he was still on a warning after an incident from before break.

So he just sat there, and when he saw O'Dreary glide into the row in front of him to speak with Michael, Saul pretended to be reading the chapter in his text. The words on the page just sort of blurred together, though, and as soon as the professor moved on, Saul sat back in his seat and watched with curiousity as a girl approached his roommate and greeted him.

After eavesdropping on the brief exchange between them, Saul couldn't keep him tongue in check any longer. "Hey, Michael, lighten up," he told his Housemate, "she's just trying to get to know the people in her group." He gave the girl a grin, "Hi, I'm Saul, and I'm a Jolly Green Giant, too." He lifted up his parchment with word green on it for her to see. He'd picked it up by its bottom edge, though, so from her point of view, it would be upside down.

OOC: Prof, as there haven't been any class threads for Saul since his first day, I'm guessing here that Saul's usual manner would be frowned on and he'd frequently get himself in trouble. If I'm wrong, ignore comments about his previous history in the class as appropriate.\n\n

Echo passed Elly on his way across the front of the room. He tapped his finger on the closest corner of her desk and when she looked he waved his parchment, showing its firmly blue letters to her and the girl she was talking to. "Blue?" he asked. But Elly had red and so did the other girl and they seemed to be talking. He waved, disappointed, and moved on to the next occupied desk.\n\n

Ginger Silverstein

Ginger wasn't sure how she felt about this class yet. She thought the subject was still rather interesting, but she still felt uncomfortable around the teacher. She didn't like how he forced people to talk in front of everyone else like he did when she was a first year. She thought that the teacher was creepy, but he was interesting all the same. She knew he was Irish in some way because of his name, and red hair. Her mother's side of the family was mostly irish. Her cousin Mendelson had bright red hair and freckles. Ginger had the pale skin, but she took more of her father's Swedish heritage in her appearance.

She knew that she would need to wear some bright colors to lighten her mood up just a little because the classroom was very depressing. She always got some sort of negative feeling everytime she stepped in here, and bright colors were the only solution that seemed to keep her on task. She wore her bright green shirt with the 1 up mario mushroom with her usual frayed jeans. She wore bright neon green converse with the green streaks in her blonde chin length hair. She wore several black and neon green bracelets on her arms.

She sat in the near back, it was once again full because she spent too long playing with her cat before she came to class. She saw Adam with his usual worried look on his face, and smiled at him. He probably hated this class a lot more than she did, once again she felt bad for him.

She eyed her paper, and contemplated doodling on it before the teacher told her not to do anything with it. He was lucky he said so in time, because she was starting to rummage through her pen case to look for a color to draw with. She sighed, and put her pen case away after he instructed the class. She was relieved that she didn't doodle on that peice of paper.

She got her wand out of her pocket, and practiced the wrist movement for a couple moments. The wrist movement wasn't that difficult it was just the fact that one had to be precise about how they said their spells. She practiced with the spell a few times before she decided that it was okay to actually try it. "Aparecio" She said rather enthusiastically. It was hard to get it out considering that the room seemed to drain it out of everyone. She closed her eyes and thought about a video game. She had to pretend that she beat it or something. "Aparecio!" She said a little more enthusiastically.

After a couple moments she saw letters appear on the paper. "Blu" So she was in the Blue group it seemed.

A little after she found out where she was, a first year girl asked her if she had blue rather quickly. Ginger could tell that she was nervous, just like Ginger had been last year. "Yeah I do," she said with a sweet smile. Maybe this wasn't going to be a really bad class. She wondered who else was in the blue group. \n\n

Gray

September 30, 2006 2:15 AM
She smiled, glad the girl was looking at her softly. That was good, maybe Chali or Libby wouldn't appear here? Since they did only come while she was nervous and all. That was stupid. Especially since she was always nerbous. And with a new twist, she was mainly nervous around strangers and Leo. Which was stupid too. Why couldn't her sisters leave her in peace? She didn't like feeling crazy. Actually, who did like feeling crazy. No one. Especially not her. Not with voices. She was at least gald Alice wasn't there to bother her. Only good thing. But, oh wait, the blue group. Right. And the girl too. Oh yeah.

She looked back up. And smiled again (her old one seemed to fade away while thinking of being crazy) at the girl. She didn't know what to say now though. "Uh.. well. Good. Blue." Okay... now what? Uh... names? Did they say their names? Oh, whoops... no, not yet. So her name. She would say that next? Oh, the laughter of her sisters was just bubbling up. Not good. She quickly pushed some blonde hair out of her face and held out her hand, smacking the girl in the arm. She pulled back right away.

"Oh sorry!" she muttered. The teasing from Chali and Libby were starting to come. No, push them back, she begged. She tried again, being so much more careful this time. "Uh... Grail... Gray. Gray Markner. That's my name. And I'm in Aladren." A pause. "Oh! And you?" Okay that was it. That little thing was too much to hold back. The laughter in her head erupted strongly.

"Oh my god! You little idiot! Stop now, before it becomes too funny!" Libby was cracking up. Gray nearly began shaking.

"No! Don't make her stop! It's never too funny to see Grailie make a fool of herself!" Chali giggled. Grail shhol a little more. Trying not to shout at herself out loud. She looked past the two twins laughing in front to notice a left behing Alice. Making her feel a little better. Meaning, she had to speak. Break the silence, or in her case lack of thereof.

"So, uh, what do we do?"\n\n

Adam B.

September 30, 2006 6:25 PM
Adam had been sitting there, nervously, waiting for someone to come up and ask him what group he was in. He wasn't really looking forward to it, but at least he was prepared. He just hoped he didn't have to group with anyone really mean, like that Aladren guy, the other Geoff, who'd aimed bludgers at Kaylie during last year's quidditch game. Sometimes, Adam really wished his sister wouldn't play. She could get seriously hurt. Same with Ginger and Pepper. He didn't want them to get hurt either. They were his friends and he'd hate to see anything happen to them. Ginger's roommate and that Tallow boy scared him too. More than the average person did. Adam also hoped that either Ginger or Pepper would be with him. He didn't feel at all at ease around anyone else. He'd probably need one of them to get through this particular lesson without having one of his attacks, since he knew the odds of himself being in with a large group of people were pretty high.

So far though, nobody had come to speak to him. And that was fine, of course. Talking to people made Adam's stomach get all queasy. He never knew what to say and everything he did say sounded moronic. Adam was pretty sure everyone hated him.

Now, however, there was a first-year boy speaking to him and waving around a paper which contained the same four letter word as his own. Adam thrust his trembling hands under the desk so the boy wouldn't see. "Um, yea. I-I have blue too." He looked quickly at the boy, who'd introduced himself as Echo. Adam noticed a Pecari patch on his robes. Pecaris were, by definition, bouncy and loud and active and well the polar opposite of what Adam himself was. Stuff he found intimidating. Then again, Ginger was a Pecari and he liked her. Plus, he certainly didn't want to judge someone by their house reputation as he certainly wouldn't want to be judged by his. "I'm Adam." He introduced himself, thinking please be nice, please don't hurt me. \n\n

Ginger wondered if the girl was like Adam, and scared of a lot of things. She looked really nervous like Ginger did her first year, so she couldn't help but be very polite to her. She also wasn't a Pecari, most of the first year Pecaris really got on Ginger's nerves but there were a couple of them that she didn't mind. She felt bad for the firstie, especially if this class was rubbing her the way that it did to Ginger her first year here. She eventually managed to kind of get used to the gloom and doom.

"Aw it's okay," she said undermining the little tap on her arm. So the girls name was Gray. That was a cute name. She smiled warmly at her. She tried not to giggle as Gray struggled to introduce herself. Even though Gray had the Aladren patch, Ginger still had the hunch that Gray was one. Probably the nervousness and the meeknes when it came to personality.

"Nice to meet you Gray," she told her as Ginger shook her hand. "I'm Ginger Silverstein. I'm a second year Pecari." She wanted to add that she was one of the shy ones, but that was kind of implied by the way her posture was, but Gray seemed too nervous to notice something like that.

"I think we just have to find the rest of the people with Blue on their papers I guess." She said with another reassuring smile.

Echo Elms

October 01, 2006 12:12 AM
The older kid's name was Adam. Echo tried to think if he'd known that or not as he pulled up a chair. He liked the way Adam stuck his hands under the desk as though to say, "I'm not going to try to shake your hand." He doubted the guy did it to be nice, but it was comforting anyway. Adam's robe identified him as a Crotalus, and Echo never quite knew what to expect from the Crotali. If one house could host both Leonardo Idoya and Josh Santoro, then houses didn't mean much of anything.

While he was on the subject, he glanced around for Leonardo and let his gaze slide right over him so it didn't look like he was looking at him. He and the Idoya with the mismatched eyes had managed to avoid noticably noticing each other since that awful awkward breakfast near the very beginning of the year -- a pattern Echo had every intention of sticking to.

He didn't look at Adam directly either. The guy seemed to radiate discomfort, making Echo the outgoing and confident one in this group -- that was enough to make him uncomfortable too. The guy looked like Echo felt the first day in Cascade Hall when Meredith spilt pumpkin juice all over him when he was trying to be invisible.

He kicked the legs of his chair absently, thinking maybe he'd come a ways since then. Invisibility wasn't something he sought anymore. He settled for not sticking out.

Adam, though. Maybe he should say something? Elly would. She'd be talking and smiling like she does with everyone. That wasn't really Echo's thing. Maybe Adam was really cool, maybe he wasn't. Either way, he didn't say much. That was points in Echo's book.

"So, you, um, you think there's more blues out there?" he asked, not really expecting an answer. Grinning suddenly, Echo imagined Saul jumping up and singing out, "We got the Blues" to the entire class. Saul would have actually done it, too, even in Professor O'Leary's class. That kid was a riot -- he also happened to be Echo's potions lab partner. Echo found him sitting in comparative quiet with the green group. No fun. Saul would have enjoyed the Blues.

"That kid, Saul," Echo added, "He's my lab partner in Potions. If he got blue, he'd be all seranading us by now." He didn't believe he actually managed to say that much outloud without it having to do with the class. And to a second year! He might have swelled with pride if he wasn't so worried about how his comment would be recieved. He glanced at Adam to see if he was crazy off base or if the guy had a sense of humor. Maybe didn't appreciate Saul's antics, or he just plain wouldn't get it. "You know, like, the Blues," he added, just to make sure. His grin slipped a little as he contemplated that maybe he was completely out of line for a firstie.\n\n

Gray

October 01, 2006 6:02 PM
Pecari. Gray looked the girl over again. She didn't seem like a Pecari. To her the Pecaris seemed a little stuck-up, way too outgoing, way too happy and perfect, and way too... annoying. Just... annoying. That summed it up pretty well. But this Ginger actually seemed nice and... not stuck up. She nodded, smiling a little more. Maybe the annoying ones were only the first years.

"Nice to meet you too Ginger," she said. She was still speaking softly, shyly, but the truth was she was a little more comfortable. Chali and Libby were actually stayong slightly silent in her head. She was glad Ginger wasn't an outgoing Pecari. She didn't like people who were too outgoing, they seemed almost inhuman. Energizer Bunny-like.

At Ginger's comment, Gray then looked around for any sign of other blues. There had to be more, and to get credit they had to work in a group. "Yeah, but who else is blue?" she looked around, then noticed two boys talking. She heard the word blue tossed around a bit. Gray pointed over at them. "Those two... I think," she began. Was she wrong? Probably not. "They said blue... maybe they are?" She looked back at Ginger and shrugged.

OOC: This is continuing from me and Gray's post, but we gotta have the group form together at some point if we want to get this show on the road. :)

BIC: Ginger could tell that Gray was starting to relax a little bit. Perhaps the next time she talked to her she would losen up a little bit. That is, if Gray ever wanted to talk to Ginger again outside of class, she seemed to be a nice person to hang out with. Ginger wanted to hang out with some of the fourth year Pecaris, but she could never catch them at the right time. The twins were always busy or out and about, and she never saw Mia or Steven around for some reason.

She shrugged when Gray asked who else was blue. She of course wasn't going to know that until she managed to see them.

Ginger looked around when Gray mentioned that she saw two boys talking about blue. One of them was one of the Pecari firsties that she actually thought was bearible, and the other one was her friend Adam. The scared little shy Crotali who had a panic attack at the begining of the year. Ginger honestly had no idea how Adam got into Crotalus. She smiled at Gray, "One of those boys is my friend, I'll go check and see. I'll que you over if I find out that they are in the blue group."

She got up, and walked over to Adam's table. "Hey there," she said with a nervous smile. "I was just wondering what color you got," she gave Adam a reasurring smile.

Echo scanned the room again and caught two girls looking questioningly in their direction.

"Blue?" he mouthed, eyebrows up and questioning. He fumbled around for his sheet, almost swept it off the desk, and held it up by its now crinkled edges up for them to see. He didn't know if he would have been able to read it from that distance, but it was worth a shot. Echo sure wasn't about to go calling out across the room -- particulary not in the middle of DADA, the most serious class on the planet.

He leaned forward a bit, wondering if he needed to stand and go closer to see what they wanted. Maybe they just wanted to talk to Adam because he was so cool -- he glanced at him and doubted it -- or maybe they were looking for their group but had red or green...\n\n

Nikki Ramirez

October 03, 2006 4:40 PM
Nikki had heard stories about their Defenssee Against the Dark Arts Teacher. Drake O'Leary was suppossedly the Crimson Vampire. HAH! Yeah Right! This guy was about as much a vampire as Leo Idoya was the queen of Switzerland. Nevertheless, she paid as much attention to him as if he really was. But that was because she did that tin every class, well unless it had to do with someething she already knew everytthing about, like those crups. Professor O'Leary told the class to cast a spell over the papers lying on their desks.

Nikki got out her wand and copyed the teacher's wand movement. "Aparecio" Nikki said firmly. She could see letters starting to appear on the page. She thought they said 'yellow,' but just to be sure, Nikki cast the spell agaian. "Aparecio." The letters stood out vividly now, confirming her first thought. Yellow. She stood up with her sheet of paper and walked around to find anotther yellow. Nikki saw the word Yellow written on a piece of paper on a desk she passed, she looked over at a desk near it, where two girls were sttanding over another piece of paaper with yellow on it. One girl Nikki didn't reecognize and the other had her back to her. As Nikki approached them, she realized it was Caedence, the Pecari girl from the snowball fight.

Nikki smiled as she held up her sheet of paper with yellow written on it. "Keep you're enemies close," she said jokingly, in her strong Mexican accent, the only thing that suggested she was not fully of American decent.\n\n

Adam managed a tiny nervous smile. Echo seemed...harmless enough. Though one could never be too sure. "Well, um, there probably have to be more blues. There are only four groups, so it's unlikely that it would be just the two of us." If only it could be! The fewer people around him, paying attention to him, the less he'd have to feel nervous about.
"I uh, don't really know what the blues are." Adam admitted, after Echo told him about Saul. He vaguely knew of both the boy and his family, who were performers. He thought Saul had a brother or cousin something in Pecari too. Adam had heard of another Pierce around. Saul seemed to attract far more attention than either his relative or that Adam himself would want and was more than happy to let it all be on his yearmate. However, Adam didn't find Saul especially hostile and feared him only slightly more than the average person because of his loud nature

Adam looked down at his desk, feeling like everything he said was just so dumb. Echo was probably going to hate him like most of the rest of the school did and think he was a huge freak. "Is it a muggle thing?". His voice had no disdain to it, merely curiosity. Like lots of purebloods, he really didn't know much about muggle stuff.

Another familiar voice reached them. Ginger! Adam looked up at her, smiling nervously and replied "We've got blue, you? This is Echo." He added.

Not humorless, just muggleness-less. Not knowing about the Blues was a possibility Echo hadn't thought of, but he shouldn't have been so caught off-guard by it. After all, a lot of the other kids had no clue when it came to muggle stuff -- but then, wizards had music too. Didn't they have the Blues?

"Uh, it's like a type of music. It's got a, later," he cut himself off because there was a girl coming toward them. Danger: Older female. Name unknown. Possibly Pecari. He tried to look sort of less dorky -- but that would probably require a major haircut and a nose job. For all Echo rather liked his crooked bumpy nose (courtesy of his new not-exactly-a-friend-but-no-longer-an-enemy, Brandon, who beat him up in the third grade), it just didn't make him look particularly suave.

Not that he was trying to be suave. Not being thought of as "that dumb firstie, why do we have to work with him?" would suit him just fine. Adam seemed more comfortable with this girl than he was with him, so -- considering Echo didn't think of himself as a threat -- then that probably meant this girl was a-okay. Still, he wasn't taking any chances. Adam might not be a-okay either. It might be a clique thing.

"Hey," he said brightly (but not too brightly) when Adam introduced him. That was it, just "hey." He was going for "not locker-stuffing material." He'd heard all about muggle locker stuffing traditions while he was home was very glad Sonora had a fortunate lack of lockers. He half smiled too, just for good measure, and let Adam do the talking.\n\n

Gray

October 05, 2006 5:53 PM
After seeing Ginger walk over to the two boys and stay, Gray realized she was right in hearing. The two boys were blue as well. This meant Gray actually had to summon up strength to walk over to the three, and join the group she was put in. Great, two other people she didn't know. They also had the possibility of being that annoying Pecari that Ginger wasn't. Great. Not only could one of them be an extremely annoying Pecari, Gray also remembered she didn't have much luck talking to boys outside of August, Gary, and Leo (and even with them she had some problems). She shoved her hands into her pockets and touched the note. All the sudden, Alice was in her head. Great, now a dose of insaneness to go along with that shy.

"You are never going to get a boyfriend, I'll bet. They'll all run and hide each time you utter the language you speak when you talk to them," she could tell her head-Alice was trying to impress the other two. And hard, rom her earlier quietness while Chali and Libby raged.

She found herself looking right at Ginger, instead of the other two boys. When the older boy (Adam?) finished introductions, Gray spoke softly. "So... they're blue too?" she asked, trying hard not to look at either boy. Not going to look at them out of fear of what her sisters would say when they saw her reactions (saw!? She was referring it to seeing, she was going crazy!). She heard Chali and Libby making rude statements to her in the back of her head, and Alice following along half-heartedly. She really needed this to stop. Speak! Look at them and speak!

So she did turn, and look. And oh, what should happen but her hearing Libby whisper to Chali, "Oh, she's going to make the hugest fool of herself," and she was nervous again. She was glad she wasn't shaking from before, at least. Say your name, now. She had to, to drown out the three in her head. "Gray Markner. Aladren." She had murmered it so quietly, she wasn't even sure the two heard her. She looked to Ginger for help.\n\n

Guenther Heindrich pulled the door open a little at a time. Nervously, he walked up to the teacher and handed him his pass. "Sorry I'm late." he apologized.

Walking to the back of the class to find a seat, he looked for someone who could tell him what they were doing. He didn't want to bother the teacher in any way. One of the students in the back was happy to give him the instructions, to Guenther's relief.

Guenther took the piece of parchment and attempted to make the words appear in the way that the other student was attempting. "Aparecio" He said softly, twisting his wrist like the others around the room.

It didn't work. Unfrustrated because he knew he wasn't going to get it the first time, he tried again. "Aparecio"

Nothing. He sighed. Well, there was only one way to get this and it was to keep trying. He tried to figure out what he was doing wrong. He stopped for a moment and looked at the student next to him. The kid had said the same words he had, but the wrist movement was different. Guenther had been moving the opposite way, because the boy had been facing him when he was showing him how to do it.

Guenther mentally slapped himself. He should have seen that one coming. "Aparecio" he said again, doing it the opposite way as all the other times. IT WORKED! A word was appearing. It was GREEN!

Echo Elms

October 07, 2006 11:22 AM
What a strange group of people, Echo thought. In all his time at Sonora, just about everyone Echo met was pretty confident and people-oriented. Now, here he was, in a group with Adam and Gray who were sort of the opposite of confident. Echo had gotten used to being the only awkward member of a bunch and he almost wanted to exaggerate his weirdness just to make the dynamic more of what he was used to -- which was rediculous when he considered just how hard he worked at trying to fit in.

He slid his seat over towards Adam to make room for the other blues (and lots of elbow room for him), and hooked his feet around his chairlegs.

"I'm Echo, Pecari," he introduced himself to Gray and immediately began looking for some imaginary item in his bookbag just in case she was a hand-shaker. He found a pencil and an eraser and decided that was a good enough thing to pull out even though he already had a ballpoint on the edge of Adam's table. He'd need to pick that up at some point. Right now, he'd have to reach around someone to get it. "And this is Adam, he's in, um, Crotulus. And you said you're Gray, right, and she's Ginger." Reviewing is good for the name-remembering muscles. He went around the circle one more time. "Adam, Ginger, Gray, Echo. Okay, so, um, now what?"

Right, so, self. You don't talk half this much to Elly and Mer. But someone needed to take some charge of the group and the others didn't seem to be stepping up. He couldn't just sit there and listen to awkwardness, could he? Not when they had a purpose. So much for not being a stupid firstie, his geeky side was definitely going to take over in about two second. Was his face turning colors? He looked for Professor O'Leary in the crowd and he seemed like maybe he was thinking about saying something. That would be really good right now.

OOC: We can probably move up above and get this show on the road.\n\n
