Don't fall down, Beginners (1st and 2nd years). by Professor Wright

"Hello, everyone!" Professor Wright greeted the first and second years, with as much enthusiasm as he could muster.

Expression of overt emotion had never, it had to be said, been one of his strong points. He had grown up as an only child in a quiet, unobtrusive house, with quiet, unobtrusive parents, the sort of frowned at any sort of racket or show of uncontrolled feeling. He had always been quite confident they cared for him and each other, but it simply wasn't their way to make a fuss about it or anything else, which meant it wasn't his way, either, almost by default. However, he was in a good mood today. The activity he had come up with for them today would be interesting to watch, at least for him.

"Magic, as you all know, makes a lot of aspects of our lives much easier. We can use one tool - " he held up his own wand as an example of this - "to achieve many results with far less effort than our Muggle cousins." He had only ever personally known one non-magical person very well, and while his mother was a Squib instead of an actual Muggle, he suspected that a lot of the same principles and limitations still applied. "However, we still have to use our brains to get the best results from our magic, and that's part of what today's lesson is going to focus on.

"For the exercise, you're going to split into pairs," he instructed them. "One first year and one second year per pair, as far as we can. Once you're in pairs, the first year student will cast a Hover Charm - which is new to our friends in first year," he acknowledged. "The incantation is immivolito, and you can see the wand movement on the board. This spell is one with a rather boring name - it does exactly what it says. It makes an object hover in the air without moving, which is different from the flying charms. I am going to ask you to write about that at the end of the week, for anyone who wants to start reading ahead," he added blandly, then continued. "Once your object - a pillow - is hovering, I want the second year student to get it down again.

"I don't care how you get it down," he elaborated. "The one rule is that you must use a spell to get it down, and must not harm your classmates in doing so. There is one catch, though - these pillows are charmed so that if they fall to the floor or the surface of your desks, they will make a noise like shattering glass. Your goal is to figure out which spell you know which will allow you to get the pillow back down to you without allowing it to free-fall or land uninterrupted. If it 'shatters,' then you start all over again. Understand?"

Once he had clarified anything that needed clarifying, he added, "Your homework will be to write out a description of which spells you and your partner tried and what worked and what didn't. Pair off, come to me if you need to partner with someone in your own year - " he thought it would be simpler to assign roles in those cases than to have them fight over it - "come collect your pillows, and begin."

OOC: Welcome back to Charms! As usual - posting rules apply, creativity and realism will earn you more points than improbable performances, and tag me here if your student does something that could turn dangerous. If you have questions out of character, either catch me in Chatzy or on the OOC board. Finally, have fun!
