Professor Skies was jerked awake by a strange sensation. At first, she assumed it was a hypnagogic jerk – the strange falling sensation that sometimes accompanies waking. Except that, as the information from her senses crept in, she realised that she was lying not on a soft mattress, as she would expect, but on a hard, dusty floor. There was also too much light and noise around her.
Opening her eyes, she found herself in an unfamiliar room. It was small and plain with a bare, dusty floor and white walls. And all her colleagues were there. That had to mean it was a dream. She must have drifted back off after her sleep twitch. There was no other logical explanation. And so, initially, she didn't panic. She stood up, dusted herself down and waited to see what would happen. It was at this point that a voice broke into her thoughts, echoing from the chamber itself.
“Greetings visitor,” it said, in a calm and reassuring female tone, “We have been unable to verify your identity. The Headmaster has been alerted and we kindly ask you to wait. If we were expecting you, we apologise for any inconvenience. If, however, you're sticking your nose in where it shouldn't be,” the voice continued, its silky smooth tone dissipating to be replaced by a stern voice full of warning, “then we're not sorry, you'd better start preparing your excuses and they better be good ones. The headmaster will be with you shortly,” it concluded.
A little doubt crept into the corner of Selina's mind.... If the voice was to be believed, then there was a very good reason why she wouldn't recognise where she was. However, there was no reason for her to be here - for any of them to be there. It just... didn't make sense. It made much more sense for her to be having a very strange dream. A rather vivid dream, she had to admit. For all its limited décor, the room felt very definitely real and tangible, in a way that things almost never did in dreams... Her mind was just threatening to voice the rebellious thought that this might actually be happening, when it was cut short by someone else speaking.
Nathan slept through the initial transfer, but the sound of a female voice - something that was definitely out of place in his sleeping quarters - woke him sufficiently to sit up and take note of his new surroundings. They were quite unfamiliar. To be fair, he had only been at Sonora a year, but he was the groundskeeper, and he had felt it his duty to at least recognize all of the grounds he was keeping. This place was not on his usual rounds, or even his unusual rounds.
He thought he must still be on Sonora Academy property though, given that he was surrounded by all of the rest of the staff.
The female voice was still talking and he tuned into it to catch her warning that 'the headmaster would be with him shortly'. He looked around and verified that, yes, Mortimer Brockert was, in fact, with him already. Well, that was odd.
It was then that he noticed at least one being was missing.
"Alice!" he called out, not quite panicking, but only a few surprises short of reaching that state. "Alice, are you here, girl? Has anybody seen Alice?"
He probably should have been worried more about the Teppenpaws under his charge now, but he'd been responsible for his cat a lot longer than he had been responsible for a quarter of the school's student population.
