Closing for midterm by Headmistress Powell

The evening before the morning that would see most students returning home for the two weeks of holiday, Sadi stood at the start of dinner, and in doing so called the attention of the students. "Good evening," the Headmistress greeted the school, her tone calm and even, as always. "I am sure those of you who will be returning home tomorrow are looking forward to seeing your families again. For those of you staying here over midterm, there will be some fun activities provided to entertain you." Sadi would be giving nothing away this evening; the older students would be familiar with the sort of midterm activites that had been on offer in previous years. It might be fun for them to speculate this evening, prior to the activities being offered the following morning.

"I would also like to take this opportunity to confirm the Midsummer activity that will take place at the end of the Spring semester. For those staff and students who are new to the school, you might be aware by now that Sonora conducts a festivity to celebrate the summer solstice each year. As per the normal rotation, this year's event will be a ball." Here the Headmistress paused for the noise level to die back down. When satisfied, she continued. "All staff and students will be welcome to attend, and those in sixth and seveth years may bring a guest." More details would follow about the guests that may or may not be allowed; Muggles, for example, would not be able to attend without seriously placing the school in jeopardy of the law - something Sadi was not prepared to do.

"Musical entertainment will be provided by California's Singing Sisters, and there will be a professional photographer on hand." This ball was perhaps a little more formal than the event held four years ago, and hence the reason for the next announcement: "Dance lessons will be offered to all students after the holiday. These are by no means compulsory," but would no doubt be well-received by several students.

"That's all for now," Sadi concluded her speech. "I wish you all a joyful holiday, and I look forwards to seeing you back and well in the new year." With that, the Headmistress resumed her seat, and prepared to dine as a delicious feast appeared on the tables.

Making it easy for you, Raoul by Holly Greer

Holly would, of course, be going home for midterm. She always had and being prefect wasn't going to change that. She had presents and her horse waiting for her at home. She'd planned to spend the last dinner of the term with the Ladies, but at the Headmistress's announcement, her plans changed. She wished them all happy holidays and excused herself.

Instead of sitting near the Crotalus students, she instead took a spot at the Pecari tables. Right next to Raoul Delachene.

She didn't actually ask him to the ball, but with the Headmistress's speech still fresh in mind and the expecant look she directed at the boy she had every intention of going to the dance with, she didn't expect she'd have to wait long before the words passed between them in the other direction.

But just in case that wasn't obvious enough, she wacked the nail over the head with a mallet. Boys could be quite dense sometimes. "Do you have something you want to ask me, Raoul?" She smiled sweetly at him. "About the ball?"

Better late than never! by Raoul

Raoul was enjoying the last day before midterm. He really was going to have a lot of fun come this Christmas. His parents were trying to find out who his real family was and they had a lead in Paris. Raoul might get to finally meet his parents! It was going to be amazing. His adoptive Mama and Papa were both wonderful people, but was there a child in the world who was adopted who didn’t want to meet their real parents? It was going to be pretty cool.

After dinner Raoul saw a familiar girl walking towards him. He smiled, his teeth, which had been maintained at a brilliant white shade, flashing handsomely at her. Raoul had filled out over the years. He had taken up surfing, so had gained a very fine bit of muscle tone. Today he had worn one of those shell bits necklaces that had seemed to become fashion among other surfers. He found them very nice himself. He was considering finding a more girly one as a present for his Holly.

She sat down next to him and asked him ever so sweetly if he had anything to ask. “Now Holly what could that be?” He asked, only a minor French accent still lingered from his years in the USA, but still there from his frequent visits home to Paris. He laughed lightly. He got out from under the table, and got down on one knee, as was proper in this situation. After all, Holly was his Princess!

“Princess Holly, will you go to the Ball with your Prince Raoul?” He asked, taking her hands into his.
