Captain Leonidas Bennett

November 19, 2015 6:59 PM
The sun was just barely up when the signup sheet was pinned to the Aladren common room notice board on the first full day of school. It was written on a plain sheet of parchment with only a simple blue border and the clear, formal best handwriting of its author, one Leonidas Bennett, for decoration.

The words, which Leonidas Bennett’s oldest sister had helped with, were a little less formal. Leo himself wasn’t crazy about it, especially the exclamation points, but it got the point across and guessed it couldn’t hurt even if Eliza was wrong about it possibly making them seem more open to outsiders than they might sometimes appear. If his sister was right, that would be great because the team desperately needed the numbers now that Francesca was gone and Leonidas was already considering which of his Housemates might be easiest to persuade to join, but if it turned out Eliza was wrong, Leonidas didn’t think she was wrong enough for it to actually hurt his chances of getting the new recruits he needed.

Having gotten Leonidas' letter the night before, Clark had promptly replied with his acceptance of the assistant captaincy. It hadn't really been a surprise - he got along with Leonidas well enough that skipping the captaincy directly to John seemed unnecessary. And while Leonidas might prefer Jack to John, even with the Aladren team seeming to be an old purebloods' club at times, skipping over both Clark and John to select a third year over a fifth year prefect and a fourth year would have been just a little too obvious. Unlike Oliver, the rest of the team could at least pretend there weren't social castes in play.

While Quidditch Captain was not actually a badge Clark felt he needed (mostly because it was one his Dad had never held), he'd accepted on the basis that (a) Aladren needed all the muggleborn and half-blood representation it could get, (b) he like Quidditch well enough, (c) he couldn't let down John like that, and (d) it surely wouldn't hurt his Head Boy chances. So he'd agreed to take on the responsibility and now he had two shiny new badges to wear around on his school robes.

Seeing the notice now, Clark didn't hesitate for a moment before adding his name to the sign-up sheet. Even if he hadn't been the new assistant, he wasn't sure he could have quit the team all together. He was currently still the school's undefeated seeker. If Aladren started losing because he'd quit in a fit of pique, he would have failed his House, and what kind of prefect would he have been then? Certainly not the kind that could count on his own Housemates to vote for him for Head Boy.

Playing on a team without Francesca would definitely feel strange. And he almost had enough other activities to count as a real and sociable person without bothering to play (especially if one counted his activities with Liliana…). He even had, via prefect duties, science club and a mutual interest in chess, enough legitimate excuses to find himself around Clark and John, who he had found to be surprisingly decent company over the years, in spite of their lesser backgrounds. However, he rather liked the sport, he definitely wasn’t going to lose face to Liliana if, after playing opposite her all these years, he quit now that they were…. whatever they were to each other (just the thought of the many ways she could misrepresent that as affection had him reaching for his quill) not to mention the rather frosty atmosphere he imagined it would create in his dormitory if he didn’t sign up. They were already a player down, although they’d done decently for first years - not as well, to his chagrin, as Pecari, but better than Crotalus, and they only needed for one to be interested….

He smiled to see that Clark had got assistant captain. Really, there were no other logical choices - Leonidas, if he had been so inclined, could not have chosen based on blood without skipping over so many years as to make that very obvious, which would likely be enough to tear the team apart. And, whilst Clark was probably not destined for a terribly high place in the world, Theodore would honestly say that he deserved this. He added his name underneath the younger boy’s.

For reasons unknown (he suspected a manufacturing flaw), the pair of eyelids John had been issued at birth had an annoying tendency to remain light well past the hour when they should have become heavy any time there was a break in his routine. He had had trouble sleeping before and after the ‘first day of school’ every year even in the days when said first days had taken place entirely in his kitchen and living room, so coming back to Sonora could throw him off for days and usually, it seemed, did. This year, he'd also been preoccupied with unanswerable questions about whether his neighbors really were going to try to kill each other and how Joe was settling in to Teppenpaw, so John had not slept well at all on his first night back at school.

He was still in an inexplicably good mood as he got ready for the second day of school, though, and it only continued to improve when he got to the common room without walking into any walls and then saw the Quidditch sign-up sheet on the wall. The phrasing of the call to arms struck him as funny for some reason, but it was the new information on the state of the House he gathered from the sheet that made him smile. He had never succeeded in really convincing himself that his Beating mentor might really behave terribly and he was relieved to see that Leonidas hadn’t disproven his hypothesis. He felt around in one pocket, concluded his notebook and pen must be in the other, and got the pen out to sign himself up.

Louis Valois

One of the first things Louis did the morning after the Opening Feast was to check the notice board. Pausing only to have a brief shower and throw on his clothes (still managed to look nicely dressed despite the little time taken), Louis was still yawning as he walked down to the common room, not wanting to delay putting his name down. And yes, the Quidditch signup sheet had been put up!

He’d really enjoyed his time on the team last year and, due to spending a large part of the summer with little else to do, had been practising quite a lot. He’d been bought yet another broom over the summer (Louis playing Quidditch was something his father approved of), and had spent hours practising his shooting, and just flying around.

He really hoped the new first years would be up for Quidditch, and filling the empty spaces. Maybe he’d have a word with a couple – but then again, Emmy-Lou would never let him forget it if he was actually nice to the firsties. He chuckled at the thought.

Pulling a small quill out of his pocket, he added his cursive script to the signup sheet.

Jack Spencer

Since Aladren's sweet victory last year, Quidditch had been on Jack's mind. He loved the sport and was more naturally athletic than his older brother. Though Jack had been rather suspicious about having a witch as his captain, he'd warmed up to Francesca and saw how serious she was about the sport. But he couldn't deny that, with her gone, he felt more confident and comfortable with his team.

When he saw the signup sheet on the noticeboard in the morning, Jack was in too much of a hurry to properly take a look at it. During his lunch, Jack returned to the common room eager to sign his name for this next year. Aladren was a strong team and Jack was quite proud that the potion had sorted him into this house instead of another.
