Georgia had to say that the realities of being a prefect were not living up to the hype she had initially felt. In fact, she was coming out of their first meeting with Professor Skies feeling significantly deflated. The problem, she supposed, wasn’t even really in the job itself, so much as the fact that this was a ball year and, as Professor Skies had just reminded them, it was traditional for the prefects and head students to lead the opening dance. Professor Skies had said if any of them really had a problem they should come and see her, and that she didn’t want anyone to have to ‘be embarrassed’ (the most euphemistic way she’d been able to think of to reference John Umland dancing with a piece of scenery when his brother was one of the people listening to this speech) but to Georgia, the only thing that sounded sadder than desperately struggling to find a date was asking a teacher for help with the same.
In theory, they were all in the same boat, and it would have maybe worked out had there been equal numbers of male and female prefects, but the girls outnumbered the guys by about three to one. And of those guys, two were the kind that wouldn’t look twice at a girl like her. She was not on the pulse enough with Pureblood gossip to know that Louis wasn’t as into blood status as he had been but even if she had been aware of this fact, there was the fact that he looked like a catalogue model whilst she was distinctly fat. She had been managing to care less about that, a bit. Between the circus girl labelling it ‘booty’ and the mall guy who’d been into her, she got that she wasn’t totally hideous. But unless Louis or Fabian had a particular thing for curvy halfbloods, she was pretty sure she was still the bottom of the heap as far as Sonora social structure was concerned. The only boy who needed a dance partner and might be willing to touch her with a barge pole was Joe Umland. They had being Teppenpaws and mutual desperation in common, but he hung out with the cute (skinny) girl in his own year a lot, and Georgia wasn’t sure that Teppenpaw altruism extended to being her dance partner just cos she needed one and a girl that Joe actually liked (whether even just as a friend) didn’t.
“Remind me again why we were happy to get these badges?” she grumbled to Zevalyn, as they made their way away from the meeting. “Do you have any idea who you’re going to ask to be your dance partner? Do you have any idea how to even dance?” she added, as another issue hit her.
OOC - Am allowed to make up what was said by DH Skies as I author her as well.

I suppose it is at that, at least this year
by Zevalyn
The prefect meeting could have gone worse, Zevalyn supposed. The duties expected of her were not particularly onerous or difficult. Some patrols. Being available to help people. That kind of thing. And, dude, she could dock house points under certain circumstances. That was like real power. She doubted she'd actually have the guts to do it, at least not until she felt more comfortable in the badge, but the option was there if she came upon trouble while on patrol. How cool was that?
Of course, the other thing that came up in the meeting was that the needed to lead the dance at the ball. She remembered Headmaster Brockert had mentioned a ball at the Feast, but it hadn't meant much to her as she hadn't been here for the first one all of the other prefects had attended.
She walked out of the meeting with Georgia, frowning thoughtfully as she considered this dilemma. Maybe Jozua? She knew him from Dueling Club, but she was pretty sure he was seeing Lily, so probably not him. Um . . . otherwise, she knew Georgia and um . . . she'd made the acquaintance of the two second year Aladrens trying to figure out which one of them was Gary Harper but she wasn't going to go to the dance with a twelve year old, so they were both out.
She laughed shortly as Georgia questioned the worth of being a prefect in its entirety. "Well, for me, it was acknowledgement that I'd caught up with everyone else," she answered the literal question posed to her.
As to the actual meat of the whole problem . . . "No idea. You're basically the only person I talk to much. Jozua, a bit, because I'm in his club, but . . . he's dating Lily, isn't he?" she asked, lowering her voice as she glanced toward the Pecari prefect. They seemed to sit together an awful lot at least. "I haven't really met many sixth years, having started late, so I might have to see if any of the fourth years are interested. But no, no idea really how to dance. Took ballet in first grade, but nothing since then. What about you?"

And the discussing people's sexuality board too

“That’s really cool,” she smiled, when Zevalyn pointed out the plus side of being a prefect from her point of view. “I guess having it vaguely endorsed that I’m a decently responsible human, according to someone, and that the school isn’t totally rigged against halfbloods is kinda nice. Though would I trade in self-validation if it meant not having to dance in front of the whole school?” she grinned. “That’s a pretty tough one to call.
“Yeah, I think they are. Or like… they’re super close anyway, and she looks pretty badass so I’m so not going there,” she nodded, when Zev asked whether Jozua was dating Lily. “I don’t exactly know who’s in duelling club, but given how close they are, I bet she is, and I am not getting on the wrong side of any of that lot.” The fact that the medic or teachers could fix them all up pretty easily (at least, in so far as Georgia had seen) didn’t actually make Georgia any more relaxed about the possibility of getting hurt. Getting hurt would still… well, hurt.
“No and no,” she replied when Zevalyn asked if she had any options or dance experience. “Like, Joe’s in the same position as us, but like…. ‘Hi, we’re both mutually desperate’ doesn’t sound great and I don’t even know him. There’s Kir, this fourth year boy, who I’ve at least talked to, but he’s gay. I mean, I guess that might make it better in some ways. At least he’ll know I’m not asking him out on a date date. But like… it might look kind of lame dancing with someone younger than me. I can’t remember whether he’s taller than me or not...
“Oh,” she added, realising she might have put her foot in it… She didn’t think Kir’s sexuality was exactly a secret… He hadn’t had any problem telling her in pretty much the first conversation they’d ever had, “I don’t think it’s exactly a secret, about Kir,” - it was, in fact, not a secret in so much as something cannot be secret when it is utterly wrong. What Kir had actually told Georgia was that he was singing a song that was popular in the gay community, which combined with his tendency to wear a rainbow flag thing had Georgia adding two and two together and getting five - rather unsurprsingly and understandably, but incorrectly nonetheless, “but like… don’t say it in front of anyone who’ll be a jerk about it. He’s a nice guy. I don’t want him getting his head flushed down the toilet cos of me.”

Good to know; this where I’ll go to do that then
by Zevalyn Ives
Zevalyn nodded in agreement that validation of responsibility and lack of prejudice was nice, then laughed a little when this was posed against needing to dance in front of everybody. “I can’t speak for you, of course,” she said smiling, “but I think I’d pick the self-validation for me. There’s what, twelve of us, plus the Heads if they’re not prefects too? Add dates, and we’re talking a crowd almost big enough to get lost in.”
In response to Georgia’s slightly rambling answer to her seemingly straightforward yes-or-no question about Lily and Jozua’s dating status, she shook her head. “I’m in the dueling club,” she pointed out, “but you’re right, and after this week, I’m not sure Jozua is really a good idea. He seems a bit of a disaster this year.”
“Oh, of course not,” Zevalyn promised to keep Kir’s not-quite-a-secret to herself. “But I think a fourth year would be okay, since there aren’t really all that many in fifth. And they might like getting to do the prefect dance, because maybe it would encourage the teachers to think of putting a badge on their robes.” She hadn’t needed to try to draw attention to earn her own badge, and wasn’t sure Georgia had either (and Georgia had both other potential candidates in her House and the knowledge that she was actually eligible for it) so maybe that was just a competitive Aladren mentality, but she felt it was a valid consideration.
Though, unfortunately, there was a dearth of Aladren fourth year boys as well. And the Crotalus crop of that year probably wouldn’t look twice at a half blood or a muggleborn. “But I don’t know how much Kir or Isaac care about that.”
“Well, maybe once we wrangle up some dance partners, whoever they might be, we should invite them for double dates to the music room and get in some dance practice so we don’t all look like idiots.”

OOC - I’m going to kind of overlook your line about Jozua being ‘a disaster’ as in Transfig Georgia remarks on the whole dance thing and prefect getting ‘better and better’ and in the first post of this thread, it says they’ve just had their first meeting about being prefects with DH Skies for her to drop the ball-shell on them, so this presumably would have to have happened first.
IC “Well, remind me not to make you pissed either,” Georgia teased, when Zevalyn pointed out that she was in the duelling club. “But you only do it cos you think it’s like extra homework. Not cos you actually want to go nuclear on anyone’s ass,” she pointed out.
“Ok. So… maybe I’ll ask him?” she shrugged, when Zevalyn seemed to suggest that dancing with a fourth year wouldn’t be total social suicide. Although she thought that a gay twiglet fourth year was probably pushing it. But pretty much all the guys at Sonora tended towards the lean and/or buff side. The only slightlier chunky one was Jozua, who was already a firm ‘no,’ so she was probably going to look kind of fat whoever she danced with because… well, on account of being kind of fat.
“Sure. When I have one, I’ll let you know. Urgh, and there’s dresses to think about. It’s like super formal,” she warned Zevalyn, seeing as she hadn’t been to the last one (luckily, which meant she hadn’t witnessed Georgia’s sartorial humiliation). “When they say ball, they mean it. I have no idea what suits me. Apart from probably nothing. But like… there must be some things that will look less horrific than others.”

No, but if it happens, I'll know where to go
by Zevalyn
OOC: Okay, that's fine. BIC:
Zevalyn laughed at Georgia's joke not to make her mad. "Well, no," she agreed that she had no intention of 'going nuclear' on anyone, "but it is good practice, and I'll be glad for it if I ever find myself in a dark alley at night or something." She wasn't exactly sure what the statute of secrecy said about acts of self-defense, but there had to be exceptions for that sort of thing. And even just knowing she had magic would make her more confident and less scared should anyone try to mug her, especially once she learned apparition for real.
Zevalyn nodded. "You do that," she encouraged the asking of Kir. "And if he says no, then it's because he's gay and there's nothing you can do about that, right?"
She frowned at the news that the ball was super formal. "Like a prom?" she guessed, putting it in terms she understood. "I guess I'll have to get a dress over Christmas - I can finally go home this year, I think!" By midterm, Zevalyn expected to be completely on target, and while CATS review would have taken over playing catch up, it wasn't so urgent that she couldn't take a couple weeks break from school for once. "Do you think you'd be allowed to visit me, and we can go shopping together?"
1ZevalynNo, but if it happens, I'll know where to go380Zevalyn05
“Maybe,” she reiterated, when Zevalyn said she should ask Kir. “I think I’ll keep thinking about it for a bit…” she shrugged. Ok, so that was a bad plan in that all the available guys could get snapped up but it had the distinct advantage of not actually having to do anything right now. Procrastinating and avoiding unpleasant tasks were solidly in her skill set.
“Oh, that’s cool,” she grinned, when Zev said she might finally be able to go home. “I’ll definitely try,” she nodded about shopping. It would be fun to have some help, and some moral support. It would have been better if Zev wasn’t quite so skinny and gorgeous and bound to suit absolutely everything - or, if they were making wishes, that she, Georgia, was too - but she knew her best friend would be a good shopping buddy. She thought she’d actually believe her if she promised she looked good, because Zev probably didn’t want to see her looking stupid in front of everyone. Her mom always tried to tell her she looked nice in stuff but she always said it, even when Georgia was full on aware she looked like garbage, and she just couldn’t believe her. “I mean… like, it’s pretty easy with wizard transport, so then it’s just like… going out for the day. And my parents let me do that, so it shouldn’t be a problem. It’ll probably be easier the week I’m at my mom’s cos my dad doesn’t really have wizard stuff in his house, though I’m sure I could like… look up the nearest public floo station if I had to come from his. Are you on it, or do you use public?
“Like prom, and like… Well, you know how the clique girls are in high school dramas. The money some of these girls have to spend on dresses is ridiculous.”
“Okay,” Zevalyn agreed, not pushing Georgia since she didn’t seem willing to try asking anyone out yet. “There’s still time,” she reassured, as much for herself as for Georgia. She’d been in ‘as quickly as possible’ mode for so long it was sometimes hard to remember not everything had to be done last week.
“Great!” she enthused in genuine excitement when Georgia said she could probably come shopping with her. Shopping was much more fun with friends and Georgia knew how formal was formal enough for this dance, so Zevalyn didn’t make the same mistake her friend apparently had last time. “I don’t have a floo connection, but my neighbors do. Amber’s mom was my muggleborn liaison after I got an arrest warrant put out on my first one.” Zev grinned in embarrassed hindsight. “Amber’s our age; she’s a squib and she did her best to slowly introduce me to magic while I was in denial. If you don’t mind her coming along, I’d like you two to meet. And she’s really fashionable now, so she could help us find stuff that looks awesome. She’d probably like being part of something wizardly. I think she feels left out and abandoned since I came here,” Zevalyn grimaced regretfully though aside from writing more often, which wasn’t what Amber really wanted anyway, and might even have made things worse by fanning the jealousy, there wasn’t anything Zev could have done to improve the situation.
“Do you have any friends from home you keep up with? Or have you been drifting apart from them, too? I mean, Amber’s kind of in the opposite boat - she was born surrounded by magic and then had to learn to be a muggle, so she at least kind of knows what I’m getting into, but she’s moving away from it while I’m moving into it, and it’s hard.”
