To Holly Greer by Post Owl

Holly, the letter clutched between the talons of an owl owned by the United States Postal Service began shortly. In fact, the whole letter was short, which made it a light and almost relaxing trip between California and Arizona. The weather had been good, too. Winter's chill had lifted, but the air hadn't yet reached its sweltering heat of summer.

Mom and Michael divorced. It's official. They signed the papers last night. They were so close to a year, too, but I think your dad still has the record by a couple weeks. I'm staying with my dad until she finishes moving out of Michael's place. Guess it's good she never sold her old house.

Just thought you should know.

Prepping for the dance by Holly Greer

Holly was looking over the makeup supplies her mother had let her take back to school with her when the announcement came over midterm that there would be a ball at the end of the year. She'd worn make up before, of course, to a couple of movie openings and award ceremonies, but her mom had always helped her put it on and she was starting to worry that she might not do a good job of putting it on by herself.

She was about ready to start practicing the application of eyeshadow when the owl interrupted. Holly accepted the letter and gave the unfamiliar bird one of the treats she had taken to keeping around in the event of an owl delivery from Anabel, Cecily, or Chelsea. She recognized the handwriting on this envelop but it wasn't from any of those girls.

It was from Danny, her half-brother. Her muggle half-brother who should not have had access to owls.

With some trepidation, she used her favorite letter opener to slit open the envelop and then she took out the short note, which Danny had clearly torn out of a spiral assignment pad. The confetti along the top had at least been removed.

His words did not come as a surprise. He'd told her on Christmas that their mother's marriage was failing fast. She'd actually expected this note a month ago. With a heavy sigh of disappointment (she'd kind of liked Michael and had secretly hoped they might work it out after all), she put the letter aside and looked at her eyeshadow compact.

She wasn't in the mood to experiment anymore. She wanted Wendy.
