Library Helper Sign Ups! by Librarian Nicchi

Amelle was a little bit happy to be returning to Sonora once again after the relatively dull summer that she had had. There was one evening in particular that was interesting that had to do with Isis, but that wasn’t necessarily a fun thing for her to be a part of. It was a situation that she knew little about and she was highly doubtful that she had actually done any help, but she was glad that Isis felt comfortable enough to come to her anyway.

Aside from that, Amelle really hadn’t done much. She sang on occasion with her friends, went out a few times, and at the end of the summer, spent a couple of days in Staten Island with her parents. Amelle absolutely loved her parents, but they were quite overwhelming and often demanded more from her than what she was ready to give. She supposed that was a stark contrast to Isis from what she had gathered, but everyone had their family issues.

But now she was back at Sonora, basically her home, and ready for a new year in the library. Sure her job could be rather boring when she just sat around all day while the majority of the student body was in class, but there were people here that she cared about and who cared about her. Plus, she was really looking forward to seeing Rory and meeting the newest staff member whom Amelle had heard was actually younger than her! Finally, she wasn’t the youngest any longer.

The feast was over and although Amelle didn’t get a chance to talk with Rory or her friends, she was still happily content with her evening. There was just one last thing that she really needed to do before she went to bed that night. The Library Helper Sign Up. Amelle grabbed the familiar sign up and posted it on the board for all to see.

The sign read:

Students are encouraged to help in the library during the school year. There are two roles that are available and two coveted roles that will be awarded to specified individuals (if the numbers allow for this).

Library Monitors (Only Intermediate and Advance Students may apply for this role)

The Monitors help to check books in and out of the library, organize the books in the stacks, answer any questions that fellow students may have, and complete occasional errands that may be needed.

Library Assistants (Beginner Years can only apply for this role, but all other years are also able to apply for this role)

This role has fewer responsibilities than the Monitor. Their role consists of returning books to their rightful place in the stacks and assists the Library Monitor with whatever duties that needs to be filled.

The two coveted roles that will be elected to the individuals by the Librarian are the Head Monitor roles.

The two students who are granted this title will have the first choice in their work schedules and be Lead in deciding what duties each Monitor and Assistant will have for that day (should they so choose to do so), as well as other duties that may come about that the Librarian feels they are the best choice for.

Please note that only two Advanced students will be elected as Head Monitors and it will be based on their experience, responsibilities, and relationship with others. The Librarian will make the announcement to who was chosen when the final work schedule is posted.

If you are interested in either of these roles, please sign your name, the year you are in, and the role that you are requesting. Prior experience will be considered for the role of Monitor. For any questions, please see Librarian Nicchi for assistance.

OOC: This sign up will be posted for 2 weeks RL time. After this time, a ‘work schedule’ post will go up with a list of what everyone is doing.

Farrah had seen the sign-up sheet for the library helpers on her way to breakfast the next morning after the fast. Of all of the clubs that she had been a part of last year, she was most looking forward to this one. It was probably a little nerdy to admit to, but the library had always been a little safe haven for her. They had a small library/office back home and she would often sit in there while her father finished up some paperwork for his Vet clinic (usually just paying bills) and read whatever recommended book that he found for her. It was like their thing to do together. That and him teaching her about various animals which was now extending into the Magical world of creatures.

On top of that, there was the local library that she had her family or friends spent time at. Libraries were all the same even if they didn’t look like it. They had that same old book smell. Of course, in the non-magical world, libraries might end up going away some day due to e-books, but until that happened, Farrah would have her fill of them. Working in the library at Sonora was just one way for her to connect to her non-magical world. Her other way was ice skating. There was her nerdy talk with Kellen too that helped her through her homesickness too.

It was lunchtime now and Farrah had come back to the dorms to swap out her books before heading to lunch. On her way, she paused and pulled out a pen (she never understood why she needed to figure out a quill when a pen was just so much more convenient) and quickly signed her name on the sheet. There were other clubs that she was also excited to rejoin, like book club and science club, but this was definitely the top of her list. Once her name was signed, she tucked her pen away and continued on to the Aladren common room.

Clark's initial enthusiasm about not getting Head Boy had faded a little bit overnight. He was still glad he hadn't gotten it, but when he looked over his class schedule and started blocking out time for RATS study and homework, he was coming to the conclusion that maybe being Head Monitor still wasn't in the cards for him this year. He'd practically lived in the library last year and he didn't know if he could handle that kind of commitment on a test year. Plus, he was still the Science Club coordinator and he was newly the official Captain of the Quidditch Team, and those commitments could not be shirked either. If he wanted any free time for having dates with Lena or doing extracurricular experiments with John, he was afraid he just couldn't resume the highest position in the library (assuming Librarian Nicchi would have given it to him a second time anyway, but he saw no reason to make the decision any harder for her).

Not being a helper wasn't an option, though, so the day after the feast, he found the sheet and added his name to it.

There. He nodded, satisfied by his wording. This way, if there was a shortage of advanced students signing up, he could still fill the void, but the window had been left wide open so that somebody else could take over the responsibility. He was cutting back on the library precisely because he believed there were other people willing to take his position whereas the Science Club and Quidditch Team needed him specifically. If there weren't other options for Head Monitor, he would be more than happy to resume the best Head position in the school; he'd just probably have to drop Herbology or something, which he could admit he had signed up for solely so he could tell his dad he was taking a class taught by Professor X.

Gia was in her CATS year and so she wasn’t really sure how much time she would have to do anything for herself. She had agreed to help Laila with the Spirit Club (something that she was finding quite entertaining even if she didn’t understand everything that was involved in it) and had offered up creating the outfits. That was going to take a lot of time out for her depending on the amount of people who were willing to join and when the actual first game would be. Gia didn’t mind since she really did enjoy sewing and was getting along great with her embroidery. As long as everyone was willing to let her take their measurements relatively early, she could get started on it and be done with plenty of time.

But because of that, it meant that she might not be able to really get involved in much else. She enjoyed the clubs that she had been a part of but she just wasn’t sure if she would have time for it all with her CATS and now her Prefect duties. She would try though. And it was that thought that had her looking at the library sign ups. She had always enjoyed working in the library ever since she was a first year. She couldn’t imagine not doing it now. She might not be able to go to all the art club meetings, but she could put books away. Plus, Librarian Nicchi had always allowed them to do homework when the work was slow, so she could work here and still get her own work out of the way.

Pulling out her quill, Gia wrote her name on the parchment and then headed off to the plant section of the library to see what she could learn about Herbology. They had taken some classes on it last term, but she knew that with Herbology being a main class now, there may be a CATS exam on it and she wanted to be as prepared as possible for it. After that, she needed to get a head start of her potions. It was going to be along, but hopefully fun, year.

Kit adored books, absolutely loved them. To be able to work in the library was like a dream. It was like an extension of her home, which was technically true since the entrance to her House was in the library. Plus, the role seemed easy enough. It seemed to mostly be returning books to their designated location with occasional assistance to the library monitor(s). In honesty, she kind of liked that it wasn’t that difficult. She was sure that the monitors had a lot more to do, but given all the activities that she wanted to join, having less responsibility while still having the joy of being a part of the library process seemed perfect for her.

Of course, this also required being chosen to be a library assistant. Kit didn’t know how many people would actually sign up and being a first year made it less likely that she would receive a spot at all if older years signed up. She could only hope that she would have a chance. Pulling out her pink quill, Kit added her name, in pink ink, because it was her lucky color to the list.

One of the perks of being in Aladren, aside from having his own room, was that the entrance to the common room was inside the library. Kellen always felt strangely safe and comfortable amongst the books, so he liked that he had to pass through them twice a day. The only downside was that Arianna had to do the same, so he couldn't exactly hide from her there, not that he could completely avoid anyway as they were in the same year. He could try though.

The young Aladren left the dorms early in order to grab a quick breakfast and get some Tai chi in before class. As he passed by the bulletin board, a note caught his attention. Kellen smiled as he read the sign up sheet for library assistant and saw Farrah name on the list. He couldn't get his quill out of his book bag quick enough. Thankfully, his mom splurged and opted for self inking quills this term so he wouldn't have to revisit last years potions class.

As someone who read a lot, and could use some extra practice with his levitation spells, Kellen felt like he was a perfect fit for the position. Plus he wouldn't necessarily be required to talk much, and if he was really lucky, maybe he'd land a shift or two with Farrah. In his best handwriting, the second year added his name to the list under his friend's.

Making a come-back. by Barnaby Pye
Helping out in the library was the one extracurricular activity at Sonora that truly brought Barnaby joy. Book Club was always fun and he liked to sit around and here what kinds of things other people had to say about various titles. John Umland, for example, was someone with whom he had always admired. He had a certain way about it him that made Barnaby feel at ease or comforted.

He hadn’t been feeling well when he arrived at Sonora, it had been an exhausting summer—late nights going over all kinds of books and sifting through notes with Tarquin, and he had not slept at all on the wagon ride. Tarquin had also began drinking a new tea and insisting that Barnaby try it as it made him feel loads ore energetic, but Barnaby had barely been able to keep a cup down.

The next morning however, after breakfast, as he walked back to his dorm to collect his bag for school and noted that the library was unusually empty for a school year he remembered that the library assistant program had not yet started. Last year he hadn’t participated—the reasoning for why momentarily escaped him but he was sure there was a reason for it. There had to be. Barnaby Pye never did anything for no reason, that just wasn’t like him. He noted that a few of the students in his year had signed up for the monitor position and though he hadn’t participated as sequentially as they, he didn’t see why he also couldn’t apply for that role. After all, next year he would be in advanced classes and he was just as qualified if not more as the others from all the years he had spent going through his father’s library with Tarquin.

So he added his name to the list:

And set off to the room he now shared with only Jack Spencer—he briefly wondered why Jax Donovan no longer shared with them but it was a passing thought and not one he could dwell on for long. There was something else more pressing that tugged his mind away from it although he couldn’t quite be sure what it was, to collect his things for school.

Jack had been a diligent and faithful member to the library since his first year. He hadn't been as faithful to the Book Club, but he enjoyed being here in the library. There was a comforting atmosphere to it, a different sort of feeling from the fast-paced pitch. They were both equally appealing, but in different ways.

Just recently Jack had begun to imagine that he might actually be able to receive honourable positions at school. He'd been surprised with the position of Prefect. He hoped it was only a stepping stone towards the coveted position of Head Boy.

Likewise, after being a Library Monitor for a year, the role of Head Monitor became his new goal. Whilst his brother was rather passive when it came to these sorts of things - how he'd happened to stumble upon Prefect, Captain and Head Boy at Sonora was a mystery - but proactive when it came to friendships, Jack was the opposite. He wanted to do his best and had dreams of what he wanted to do with his life. He wanted to get involved, but his social circle was lacking. He hoped to make better friends with the other library monitors this year particularly if he was to earn the position of Head Monitor eventually.

When the sign-up sheet went up, Jack signed his name as he left his common room for breakfast. He saw that his room-mate had already signed up, and thinking of Barnaby made him think of his quite former room-mate. There always seemed to be drama brewing around him, but Jack didn't know what exactly or if his premonition was even correct. In any case, his business wasn't Jack's.

Initially, Tess hadn’t been sure if it was a good idea to sign up to help in the library again. It would be yet another thing to add to her year, and she already had baking club to run now. Also, her duties might get in the way of her returning home for visits. However, she had enjoyed being a library assistant last year, and being busy would probably be a good way of taking her mind off what was happening at home. Besides, everyone else who worked at the library seemed nice, and she was sure there would be some way of swapping shifts if she needed to occasionally.

With that decided, she made her way to the library once more. The signup sheet said that she could now apply for the position of Library Monitor, which was definitely tempting. However, seeing as she’d initially had doubts about being able to give the position of Library Assistant the time necessary, she decided it would be better to wait until at least next year before applying to be a Monitor. Anyway the signup sheet showed that there were already a few people applying for the position, all of whom were older than her and no doubt had more experience. Yes, it definitely made sense to wait until next year, when she would go for the position. As much as part of her wanted the more important role this year, she was smart enough to make the logical decision.

John’s CATS had gone as expected, proving no obstacle to taking on a full load of Advanced courses. His family had proven more difficult. Dad and Julian’s doubts about his course load had been expected, but John had been startled when his mother’s expression upon hearing his plans for the next two years had been just a little doubtful, too. He had been even more surprised when she had actually said something about it. John could never remember Mom doubting him before.

She had not, however, surprised him enough to make him reconsider his plans. He couldn’t imagine it would be much different from the past few years. Maybe a bit more interesting, but that didn’t sound like a bad thing to him. He didn’t know what the big deal was supposed to be, really. They were classes. John’s biggest problem in any formal class he’d ever taken had been sitting still and facing in the right direction long enough – admittedly, a fairly difficult problem to tackle at times, but the ‘more interesting’ bit might help with that. He had sustained attention on one topic for two-thirds of his free time for two-thirds of last year, after all, because it had been both interesting (it was the one thing he’d ever attempted that he had known from the start was truly beyond his skill level) and necessary (which was why he had just pushed himself toward a higher skill level). He had even let his other extracurricular work slip a bit in favor of it in the months between New Year and Easter. If not for the ‘necessary’ bit, which had added a constant undercurrent of anxiety, he thought almost all the memories would have been of exhilaration. He’d loved it, except for the part where he’d been constantly worried he wouldn’t finish in time. John did not think he was really constructed for downtime. He required occupation.

It was only when he saw Clark’s library sign-up that John finally, at long last, felt a sliver of doubt about the wisdom of what he was going to attempt. Yes, Clark was still apparently much distracted by his hormones, but…still. Lena was, he had decided, marshmallow fluff on the cocoa of his friend’s life. One did not dedicate oneself to marshmallow fluff and spill the cocoa, no matter what the evolutionary inclination toward over-the-top, one-note sugary sweetness told one was a good idea. That meant Clark was either a) absolutely shattered over the Head Boy thing and no longer thought he was fit for leadership, which John thought was unlikely, or b) actually concerned about his workload this year, which was only slightly heavier than John’s….

Clark, though, was someone who had to sleep – that would have been the one disadvantage to the arrangement had they moved in together, as John’s sleeping had always been erratic at best and had gotten worse over the years he hadn’t had any brothers around to threaten him with bodily harm if he didn’t at least pretend he was out. Maybe he was just accounting for his need to go to bed and pro-social tendencies and overdoing it a bit. That made sense. Feeling better about it all, John took out his own pen as planned and signed up.

A balancing act. by Laila Kennedy
Her first year, unsure that she would have been able to handle the responsibility while acclimating to the new world she had been thrust into, Laila hadn’t signed up for the library helper program. Her second year Laila had also let the ball drop and her third year she had just started intermediates and was worried about completing her coursework and handling the responsibilities of the library helper program. However, now that she was starting her second year of intermediates felt more confident. It was true that she was going to sign up for all her usual clubs and was leading two clubs (one with assistance from Gia and the other a partnership with Tess) and that Spirit Club was going to be really hard to balance with her other duties, but helping in the library was something that Laila thought would be fun and so she wanted to do it.

It was due to her long list of extra-curriculars (who would have even thought a boarding school could offer so many ‘after school’ programs?) that Laila wrote her name down for Library Assistant versus simply Library Monitor like the other fourth years were likely to do. Laila didn’t want to jump into for the first time expecting to be a leader simply because of her age and besides, she needed to know if she could balance all of her work or not. When she was an Advanced student she would be able to drop a couple classes if she wanted to (she was already considering dropping either Defence or Transfiguration but she wasn’t sure, she kind of wanted to keep them all), but until then she would have to manage a full load plus activities.

Laila wrote her name on the list after John Umland’s, the host of the book club, and wondered when the first meeting would be. She couldn’t wait to share her newest obsession with them, they were sure to appreciate it! She hurried off to find Professor Xavier in the gardens, there was about an hour left until dinner ended and she had a couple questions for him regarding their last lesson.

One of the first things Emerald did the day after the Opening Feast was head to the library. She'd gotten a glimpse of it when she'd been led to her common room the night before and now in the light of day with more time, she could see it was marvellous! Normally, she wasn't given to excessive hyperbole. Showing too much enthusiasm tended to make one seem less intelligent but if anything was deserving of a feeling of excitement, it was an enormous library!

And she would finally have the opportunity to find a quiet place to read without the interference of small children. After all, she was currently among the youngest students in school so there couldn't be. And surely, her roommates would not be an issue and she wouldn't hvae to worry about any Pecaris getting into her common room and running amock. Even if her roommates did feel like being talkative at times, why, she could just come here and find a quiet corner of her own.

It wasn't as if she didn't want to be friends with the girls she was sharing a room with, it was just that Emerald was so accustomed to noise and found it rather...completely aggravating. It would be nice to have some time when it was quiet. So refreshing.

And there were so many books. The Aladren wandered around the stocks in awe though she tried not to let it show on her face. Fiction and non-fiction, many different disciplines, ones that weren't even taught at Sonora. And there would be time now, so much time, nobody constantly bothering her to play with them or screaming about how Topaz was being mean to them. Topaz always seemed to wait until Emerald had just gotten nice and comfortable and in a really good part of a book to start terrorizing the younger kids and making them scream. It didn't matter that she didn't have to do anything with them, they were disruptive and got on her nerves. Emerald knew full well Topaz had to be doing it on purpose to irritate them and her both and she was definitely looking forward to four years primarily free of the creepy little brat. Unfortunately, Topaz would likely be in Aladren too but for right now, Emerald wasn't going to think about that. She was going to enjoy herself.

That's when she spotted it. The library helper sign-ups! This was one of the two must do activities for her at Sonora along with book club. She'd be spending hours and hours in the library as it was so she might as well be a helper. So she signed her named to the list.

Just because she had gotten Head Girl didn't mean for a second that Chaslyn could slow down and relax. She couldn't remember the last time she'd done such a thing actually. Possibly it was so long ago that she'd been too little to do much but eat, sleep, cry and go to the bathroom. Two of those things were rather luxuries at this point, one she wasn't supposed to do but couldn't stop at times, and the final of which, well, she was certainly allowed to make time for because the alternative was unacceptable. Not to mention embarrassing and gross. Still, she felt guilty if she took too long and always brought something with her to study just in case.

Mother's reaction to her getting Head Girl was as she expected-practically non-existent. That was how it had been when she'd gotten prefect as well. Congratulations from all her other relatives and nothing from Mother but a letter reminding her of the importance of doing well on CATS,to practice her activities, and that she should be starting a club. This time was a letter reminding her the importance of RATS, to practice her activities and that she needed to be starting a club.

Sometimes, she wished Mother would just say that she was proud of her and that she loved her, but it never came. Only when Mother was trying to paint Amity as a failure, a disappointment and a bad daughter did she ever seem to mention Chaslyn's accomplishments with anything like pride. She was only praised by Mother when it was at her sister's expense. It had been that way their whole lives. She felt awful about it, but she had to settle for that. That and not being yelled at.

So obviously, not signing up for library duties this year was not an option. She had to do it and she had to be Head Monitor. In fact it was more important to be Head Monitor this year than it had been last year because if the position was revoked, it would mean that Chaslyn had not done a good job, and Mother would be furious. She didn't even like it when Mother was furious with Father or Amity or Phillip or Aunt Alice, she certainly didn't like when Mother was furious with her .

She placed her name on the list for the last time.

Simon had been a bit dazed and confused through the length of the school tour, but he had made note of where the library was. The library was very important for anyone who meant to be serious about his studies of magic, of course, but it was also a place which was inherently attractive to Simon on its own merits. He had never been brilliant at any of his studies, but Simon nevertheless enjoyed being among his books at home. Books held no expectations, passed no judgments, had no ambiguous facial expressions; the histories were the only ones that even did anything for him to compare himself to particularly, literature generally being dedicated to showing what kind of person not to be. Books were relaxing, as long as he wasn’t being quizzed on them.

Accordingly, the first time he got a chance, Simon found his way back to the library. He took several wrong turns along the way, but persevered and made it through the doors at last. Relieved, he just wandered around for a while, seeing what there was to see; once he was startled when a person a foot taller than Simon and with features that resembled those of the villain of one of Simon’s old picture books asked if he needed any help, but other than that, he might as well have been alone, a comfortable thing for him. He relaxed to the point, in fact, that he almost missed the sign-up sheet posted near the front altogether on his way out, but somehow his eye lit on it at last and he stopped, reading what the librarian had written.

Simon bit his lip for a moment, but really, he had no choice. Father had been very clear that Simon should be involved in things at school; the thought of Father frowning at him had not been why Simon had allowed himself to be ushered to the Quidditch sign-up sheet, but it had not helped him maintain his lack of interest in joining, either. This seemed like a respectable thing to be involved in, and a responsible one, the kind of thing that would prepare Simon for his role in life, and it was here, where he had decided he liked to be. There were, therefore, few downsides to signing up, so he did - Simon Mordue, First Year, Library Assistant.

Not sure why I didn't join sooner. by Daniel Fintoc
Daniel had grown a lot over the past year and that was particularly noticeable after a summer away from Sonora, during which he’d had to get the new school robes his extended frame was desperately in need of. Not only did the physical changes make him feel much less of a kid but he thought he was maturing a great deal, not that he hadn’t been mature before of course. Dan had always been an odd mix of seriousness and fun and that probably wasn’t going to change completely. He still felt dwarfed by Chuck but at this rate he doubted that would forever be the case, although his cousin had a lot of bulk that he hoped never to have.

There were little things that he thought and did that made him feel so much more grown up entering his third year. One thing was for certain, he now had a crush on a girl who wasn’t some three years his senior and hopefully that meant something might come of it. Whilst he still held the same great admiration and respect for the beautiful redhead, Dan felt himself growing out of it. He was beginning to experience real feelings (or rather, realistic feelings) for another girl and hence he hadn’t put Makenzie as “best looking” in the yearbook at the end of last term. No one could possibly find out who he’d voted for in such a category of course and to most people that section probably didn’t mean anything, but to him writing a certain name down on the parchment had been the pinnacle moment of admitting his new crush.

Academically speaking, he was so ready to be an Intermediate student, and that wasn’t just because of who would be in his classes. But there was something about his thought process in the lead up to signing up again for Quidditch that had lead him to realise that maybe he was ready for something new in his school life: responsibility.

Dan always spent a lot of time in the library. It was filled with all kinds of books that were great sources of knowledge for his studies, because being studious was what intelligence was really all about. And sometimes it was nice to be sociable whilst one studied so the library was a great place for meeting up to work with other people. He had his lonely dormitory for the more serious thought-consuming of homework.

There were a lot of people already signed up for library duties but that didn’t put Dan off since he knew there were plenty of hours in the week for them all. Spending so much time in library meant he already knew how everything worked pretty much so it wasn’t going to be difficult making sure he was a good library assistant. That was the position he settled to go with, even though being an Intermediate now meant he was eligible to apply for the higher role of library monitor. It certainly wasn’t because he lacked ambition in any way but because he knew to be realistic.

Daniel signed his name neatly and smiled. He was going to be a library assistant and even if it was only a fairly small responsibility to have, it felt nice and he was suddenly very keen to get started.

Amelia had been stunned by the size of Aladren’s library when she had first been led through it to her common room. Over the days that followed, she had started to feel a tad intimidated by it. She liked to learn, yes, and even to read, but something about this library made her feel a bit…inadequate. Thinking about the Aladrens in her family didn’t help, either – they were all much more serious, stern, intellectual characters than she was. It wasn’t that that was all there was to them – Anne was a lot of fun, sometimes, and Uncle Geoff…well, actually, that really was all there was to Uncle Geoff, but her cousin Alicia was fashionable and loved parties on top of being really, really smart – but it just looked to Amelia like it was a much bigger part of who they were than she felt like it was for her.

Since she had to go through it at least twice a day anyway, though, Amelia realized she was quickly getting a feel for the layout of the library. She began to look for secret exits and other secret passageways besides the one leading to Aladren – there had to be some, didn’t there? What was the point of just building one, other than because it was traditional for Houses not to visit each other? – and so to just rush in and out of the actual door to make it to things on time. As a result, it was only one day when she needed to check out some books that she noticed the sign-up sheet near the front.

Library assistanting. Well! That was something she was a little surprised that students were allowed to do, but it said right there that even Beginners could do some things, and her roommate Emerald was one of those who had signed up. That made signing up seem like an even better idea than it had at once; she had Quidditch in common with Kit, so if she and Kit were both here with Emerald, they could have that in common, too, and go further toward Everyone Being Friends. Nodding, feeling very clever, Amelia put down her books long enough to sign up as Amelia Layne, 1st, Assistant before rushing back over to the desk to finish checking out in time to get back to her room before curfew.
