Who might I spy in the gardens? by Ayita Bly

While her summer had been odd, Ayita decided it was by far her favorite. She had never minded the way she spent her previous ones—on the street, dependent on the goodness of human nature, compassion of strangers—she liked staying with the Headmistress’s family quite a bit. There was no worry of if there would be a meal, and regularly provided care was much more comforting than hoping someone might pass by with a kind word.

Still, the brunette enjoyed Sonora, and she was glad to be back. This year, she had some exams named after furry, whiskered animals, but they were not until the end of term, and she was not terribly worried. Ayita was not the brightest child scholastically, but she did well enough. She studied, and her grades reflected the fact.

Tonight, however, she did not particularly feel compelled to study. The year was only just beginning, so nothing as of yet was quite difficult enough to need extra time. Ayita instead decided to spend some time in one of her favorite places: the Labyrinth Gardens. Out here, she felt at peace, as if she was one with the world surrounding her. Often she did not feel as though she belonged in a world so different from her, but nothing here suggested she differed from any other guest.

Footsteps in the distance informed her that she was not alone, but she hardly minded company. While having few friends—she felt as though she had somehow drifted from Josephine, and she was not sure who else would want to call her “friend”—she was fond of company. The fifth year liked to hear others speak, learn of their stories and cultures, and smile. Communication was the only real method to appease her curious nature.

Ayita noticed the footsteps sounding closer, and as she rounded a corner, she discovered whoever the source was. “Oh, hello!” she offered crisply, every syllable perfect and forced. Even after four years here, she still overcompensated for her native tongue. “Out for a stroll, as I am?”

Sibling Rivalry by Darian Javaris

When Darian was sent to attend Sonora Academy, everybody said he was the most disagreeable-looking child ever seen. It was true, too. He had a little thin face and a little thin body, thick dark hair and a sour expression.

His thoughts went to his mother. She had not wanted a little boy at all, and when he was born she handed him over to the care of his sister, who kept him out of the way. Making them now teenagers, made it harder. Javiera his sister was constantly trying to remind him that she was older by such a small time space, and now that they were in second year, she didn't have to worry about him on a daily basis, therefore he barely saw anything of her.

So it was on this fine sunny day, in the gardens that he was hiding away, not really taking in the beauty of the gardens but he paused for a moment to look around.

He muttered away kicking the stones on the path, "Javiera has everything, and still the world holds no joy; and yet she insists on making fun of those who would see it for its possibilities. The flowers are beautiful and where is she, inside somewhere keeping to herself."

Suddenly he wasn't all alone, and he looked up in surprise. It was like someone was looking straight through his invisible self. She looked right at him, and offered a friendly hello. He felt even more ashamed that he hadn't spent the time to even meet anyone.

"Uh... you might find it extremely surprising, but I am actually hiding. And not from you, the person I'm hiding from would never actually venture out here on such a lovely fine day."
