Near a blind panic [Tag: Jose] by Andrew Duell

The Pecari commons was around here somewhere. He wasn't looking for it, necessarily, only one of it's residents. He had to find Jose. Andrew strode up and down the paths of the gardens. This was direly important and he hoped and prayed that Jose could help him. He knew he had to move fast, but he also had to move cautiously. One wrong move would foul up the entire operation, then he'd be stuck. It didn't help that he'd already heard from his mother, Jhon was to blame for that one. She probably got to her room after the opening feast and sent a full report back to her mother and his.

He kicked a rock that was laying in the path, it skipped a few times then disappeared into the shrubbery. He looked around again where was his friend? For that matter, where was he? Crap, he didn't recognize this part of the gardens. Stupid gardens. He flopped down on a convenient bench and tried to relax a moment. That didn't work, he was back on his feet and pacing through the gardens aimlessly once more. He pulled a small notebook out of his robe and started flipping though it as he walked, murmuring to himself. He caught some movement out of the corner of his eye, he looked up. Jose! On another path, how in the blazes do you get over there from here? "Jose!" He called out, "Wait up!" He looked up and down the path he was on, ummm... left, why not. He headed that way looking for a cross path over to his friend.

Take a deep breath. Good. One more time. by Jose Hernandez

Jose was on his way back to the commons from the Hall. He had a small cache of munchies - carrots, mostly, which were supposed to be brain food - to chew on while working on his first assignments of the year. He'd been walking this route for just over five years now so he wasn't paying it much mind when he though he heard a shout and some leaves rustling.

He looked up and saw Andrew on the other side of the hedge. The Teppenpaw looked momentarily baffled by the wall of plant between them, then started hurrying down the wrong way. Clearly he did not spend as much time out here - especially in this part of the maze - as most Pecaris did. "No!" he called after his friend, "You wait, I'll find you!"

At a quicker pace, he navigated through a few turns until he was in the same row Andrew was in. "Hey, what's up?" he asked curiously. "What brings you out to the gardens looking so hassled already?" They'd only barely started classes again. Surely it wasn't Fawcett's Advanced class already that was causing Andrew problems.

Then he added, because it was something he had already thought it was he should mention next time he saw Andrew and here Andrew was, "Your cousin sure asks a lot of questions." It was probably something Andrew was aware of already, being related to her and all, but the other sixth year hadn't thought mentioned it to Jose, and it was a dominant enough trait that the information ought to be shared one way or the other.

Maybe relaxing, a bit... possibly... by Andrew

Andrew watched as his friend wandered off down a path that he was sure was the wrong direction. Where was he going!? The path should come out... he turned around, but couldn't find where the path he was looking for had been. Or was that some other section of the gardens that he was thinking of? He looked around again and Jose popped out of a side path he hadn't even seen. How..? Someday he was going to have to map this place out. Someday.

Now... how to begin... and Jose brought up Jhon. Well, that was easier... and should have been tackled sooner. He gave Jose a weak grin, "Yeah.... right... Jhon. Heh. I would have warned you sooner, but I wasn't sure what house she was going to end up in. Heck... I probably should have posted a bulletin for the school as a whole. She's..." he paused, looking for the right word, "...mildly obsessive? I'm not sure how it is with your standard, everyday wizarding families, but my mother and aunt tend to follow the news and gossip of the big pureblood families kinda like... people watch soap operas. My best guess is that is the closest drama they get since they don't have daytime tv." He shrugged, "I don't see it myself. Anyway, Jhon got sucked into it as well and you're a California Pierce." He announced that last bit with the best dramatic booming voice he could manage. "I'm hoping she goes crazy the first week or so, then calms down. I think Coach Pierce is in for the worst of it though. Good luck to you, let me know if you need any help wrangling her in that department."

Crap. Now he had to get down to actual business. "But... yeah, that's not the only reason I was looking for you..." he paused again, Jose was his friend and he needed all the help he could get. "I heard an alarming rumor from Jane at the opening feast... she thinks that the prefects are opening the dancing at the ball."

Jose blinked. Then he did it again. He might introduce himself in the standard format (Hello, I'm Jose Hernandez of the California Pierces), but he wasn't sure he'd ever heard his family's name used in quite that way before, nevermind get looped in with the pureblood families, which they weren't. They were a mongrel family. That was a big deal to both them and the actual pureblood families.

Furthermore, he hadn't realized that was why Jhonice had been asking him so many questions. He thought she just wanted to know more about Quidditch in particular and Sonora in general.

And if this was about families and Coach Pierce was the first name on her list . . . Jose really hoped the coach wouldn't hold it against the Pecari Quidditch team. He really hoped Maria's attempt to reach out a little worked and she'd hold some small smidgeon of family fondness for him and not hold the inquisitive questions of a gossiper against the girl's whole House.

It was almost a relief when Andrew distracted that line of thought with a question about the dance. Jose nodded. "Yeah. Saul had to when he was prefect. It's what got him to finally ask out Briony in the first place. And I think it was the same for the one we went to before." He shrugged, unconcerned. "Dunno who I'll ask this time. Tawny, maybe. We went together last time." He frowned a little. "I hope she's not still mad about the whole not getting prefect thing, though."

He grinned then, the frown quick to fall away. "So, who are you asking out?"

Oh good, then I'm not alone by Andrew

Great, independent confirmation. He had to accept it now, he was going to have to help lead off the dancing. Andrew sighed, okay he could do this, somehow. Jose seemed awful casual about the whole thing; in fact judging by his reaction, he almost seemed more worried about Jhon then the dance. When Jose mentioned he would probably ask Tawny, Andrew crossed her off his list. Literally, he had his list of the possible candidates in his notes he marked off that Jose was going to ask her.

"Well, that's one of the problems I'm running into..." Andrew responded to Jose's inquiry. He showed him the list he was working on, "I've got the fifth, sixth and seventh year girls here, and started marking off those that already spoken for that I know of to see what options I have. Once that is complete, I'll have to move onto phase two and and come up with a plan to actually ask her. I was hoping you might have some strategies in mind for phase two. You at least went to the last ball, I didn't."

He remembered it, he hadn't been able to work up the courage to ask anyone, and he was really hoping he wasn't going to have a repeat performance. The school seemed to be forcing him otherwise. "You really think Tawny is still mad?"
