Even though the shock of not being named prefect had worn off, Tawny's anger had not. It was just in the Pecari's nature to hold grudges. Granted, she wasn't sure who exactly she was mad at, so she just chose to be mad at everyone . The staff, the people who had been named prefect, the Twerps, Pippa.
It was somewhat hard to be mad at Jose. Tawny liked him a lot. Still, he had gotten prefect and she hadn't. That wasn't fair. Tawny had needed the title. Jose didn't even act like a part of their year. It seemed like he wanted to be one of the Twerps. Something that the fifth year girl found unfathomable. Why would anyone want to be one of them ?
It kind of hurt too, that he would want to be associated with them over being associated with her. She hated them for trying to take him away from her. That was the main reason for Tawny's hatred of them. That, and they were really annoying. She knew that if she didn't get Head Girl-and she had to be Head Girl-it would be their fault.
It was easier to be mad at them than it was Jose. It was easier to be mad at Edmond, Andrew and Marissa as well. And at the staff. How could they have not chosen Tawny? It truly baffled her. She knew she was a better option and she had really needed to be prefect. Pippa was prefect and it was just another way that her sister had bested her. Her parents were proud of Pippa and now they wouldn't be of her. It was always like that and Tawny hated it. Why couldn't she be the special one for once?
Plus, she still wasn't betrothed. Pippa had been betrothed forever, and Tawny had heard that Quentin was now too. Worse than that, Alessa was betrothed. Alessa who was younger than her. Okay, granted, it was only by like, three months but still, to Tawny, the grade level seperating them made her feel the age difference between them was much larger than that.
At least the Twerps weren't betrothed. But then, Tawny didn't think most of them were purebloods anyway. And no way Nina's liberal father was going to arrange her one.
Still, the fact remained that they had not yet been able to find someone willing to marry Tawny. Granted, she wished she could marry someone whom she loved and whom loved her but that was just not going to happen. It wasn't done that way for girls like Tawny so she wanted to get betrothed. She would hate to end up an old maid. She could practically hear her grandmother saying that she was a lost cause.
If she had been prefect, it would have been different. It might have made her look more attractive to potential suitors. Tawny just had to be Head Girl now. For the sake of her future.
It occasionally happened that Dana wished she wasn't in pecari. It didn't happen often, because her housemates were friendly and pleasant for the most part, and she liked sharing a room with Alison. In fact she only really got the feeling when Alison was out of the dormitory, and Dana was in need of company. She wasn't really friends with anyone else - she knew the Quidditch team but they were all younger than her, and most of them had their own friendship clique that Dana probably couldn't permeate even if she'd wanted to. These were the days when the other Houses had more appeal. If she were in Crotalus she'd have two roomates, and she'd be able to keepo an eye on Jethro. If she were in Teppenpaw she'd be sharing a room with Pippa, who seemed nice, and she could talk to Nathaniel, too. If she were in Aladren, her brother's old House, she'd share a room with Taylor and have plenty of other people in her year to talk to (though admittedly she wasn't sure if any of the Aladren sixth year boys really did social conversation). As it was, she was in Pecari, so when Alison wasn't around, Dana found herself wandering round the gardens to pass time.
That was what she was doing now, because Alison was nowhere to be found, Dana was fed up with studying, and the weather was pleasant. Cooling down a little as they got closer to winter, but it was still the Arizona desert, so it wasn't exactly cool by normal standards. In fact although Dana was wearing a lightweight summer robe (pale blue silk with small yellow flowers embroidered on the sleeves) she still felt warm (How other students could walk around in jeans was beyond her). She created a gentle, flowing breeze as she walked, which was pleasant.
Sometimes she was bound to come across other people on her walks, and today she came across Tawny. It hadn't really occurred to Dana before, but Tawny was sort of in a similar position, not having other people in her House to takl to. Then again, there were hardly any students in that yeargroup altogether, so none of the other House might provide any improvement. "Hey," Dana alerted the younger girl of her presence. It was then she noticed that Tawny didn't look especially happy herself. The sixth year wasn't the sort to pry, but she was the sort to help someone out if it was in her power to do so. She'd leave it up to Tawny to decide how much she told, with the innocent question, "You okay?"
Tawny was brought out of her thoughts by a voice asking if she was okay. She looked at the person who had spoken, which was Dana Smythe. The fifth year had never talked to the older Pecari before, but truthfully, Tawny didn't have a problem with her. She did not appear to be prissy like some of the other girls in their year groups. Of course, Pecaris tended not to be so. It seemed to go against the definition of what a Pecari was.
Which was why Tawny did not especially hate her sorting. Truth be told, she was glad she wasn't in Crotalus which was considered the most respectable house, because that's where the prissy girls were mostly.
Unfortunately, a lot of Pecaris were on the other end of the spectrum, and loud and annoying. Dana and her roommate, Alison, did not appear to be but then there were the Twerps. Tawny might even like her house if it wasn't for people like them . They seemed so full of themseves and aside from Nina, they had no good reason to be. They were a bunch of nobodies.
Not that Tawny liked Nina either. In fact, the fifth year regarded her distant cousin with more annoyance and jealousy than the others, except for Singing Twerp, who she had managed to figure out was the one who played beater, while Red-haired Twerp was keeper and Other Twerp was a chaser. Her problem with Nina was that Nina was "above" her in the Brockert family hierarchy, being that Nina's great-grandpa was the patriarch and Tawny's was just his younger brother. Not to mention her parents were comparatively liberal. This was why Tawny referred to her as Royal Twerp.
As for Dana, the fifth year felt the need to be pleasant to her. She wasn't someone Tawny needed to win over to her side so she could get Head Girl, but she was a Smythe after all. Her parents would not like it if Tawny was rude to someone from such a good family. It's why she was normally polite to Dana's cousin Jethro as well. That and he was particularly non-threatening. Besides, Dana was being nice to her. Dana had asked Tawny if she was okay. Tawny really appreciated that as nobody ever seemed to care how she felt.
"Oh, I'm fine." She told Dana, smiling politely. Tawny actually was, even though she was still kind of mopey and just because Dana was being nice to her, didn't mean Tawny was going to spill her guts to her. They didn't know each other well enough and the fifth year tended not to trust easily. "How are you?" Tawny asked.
Tawny's 'Oh, I'm fine' was accompanied by a polite smile, so dana took her reply at face value. Whatever had been bothering her was obviously not incredibly important, and therefore there was no reason for Tawny to share her thoughts with someone she barely knew, like Dana. In a similar fashion, Dana wasn't about to start whining about feelign lonely to a girl who wasn't a complete stranger exactly, but who definitely wasn't a close friend. Therefore she replied, "I'm fine, thank you," with a small smile of her own.
"Thought I'd enjoy a short walk to make the most of the pleasant weather." She elaborated with some small talk about the weather - how traditional of her. It was actually true, though, which she thought counted for something. She added a little extra so Tawny wouldn't think she was being uncreative. "I always freeze when I go back to Illinois at midterm," Dana explained. She couldn't remembered off hand whereabout Tawny would be likely to spend her holidays - she had never been good at remembering all the important societal facts that her mother seemed to have down to perfection. Dana knew it was important, she really did, but she simply wasn't interested enough for the information to sink in. She was glad that all the Smythes still lived in Illinois; it made her own family easy to place.
Thinking that some light conversation might be exactly what she needed right now, Dana crossed to a small stone bench just a few feet from Tawny. "Do you mind if I stay a while?" she asked, anticipating that there would be no objection (because she knew Tawny had been brought up the way she had herself) and sinking lightly onto the seat.
Then there's no point in trying to be attractive
by Tawny
Tawny nodded. To be honest, she did not care really why Dana had come out to the Gardens. The sixth year's reasoning was not necessary, given that it was probably not something Tawny-related. She did not expect Dana to be plotting against her as they really did not know each other. Nor did she have an issue with Dana that required her to know the older girl's motivations in order to stay one step ahead like she did with the Twerps.
Not that it was hard to stay a step ahead of the Twerps. They appeared to be basically really dumb anyway. Besides, they were all so self-centered that they wouldn't notice her trying to destroy them and so arrogant that they would never suspect that there was someone who did not worship the ground they walked upon. It really did work to Tawny's advantage. The only thing that would be make her happier than destroying them would be destroying Pippa.
However, she did care that the older girl didn't know why she was out here. "Oh, me too." The fifth year lied. Who wanted to tell others-especially someone they didn't know very well-that they were busy sulking and trying to think up ways to win Head Girl? Granted, Dana hadn't gotten prefect either but for all Tawny knew, the other girl didn't care. Though she thought at least one Smythe had been prefect before. She wondered if Dana resented Lucas as much as Tawny did Pippa.
But yet, some people might not necessarily want the honor. Tawny knew that this was probably a fact, but it wasn't something she particularly understood. Who didn't want to be important? Of course, technically Tawny was important. She was a Brockert, after all. But next to her sister, she just felt like she didn't matter sometimes. Like everything she did was wrong. Her becoming prefect would have proven to them all that she was just as good as her sister.
"Sure, you can stay." Tawny replied. She could think of no reason why Dana couldn't and she wasn't someone Tawny felt she could get away with being rude to anyway.
