Boom! by Andrew Duell

Andrew had a nice view of the clouds. They were soft and fluffy. The ground that he was laying on was a bit hard though, and there was at least one pointy rock poking him unpleasantly in the back. The garden was peaceful though, just that slight ringing noise he could hear. Why exactly was he laying here again? He tried to sit up, that was a mistake. The world spun a bit around him, and he returned to his previous prone position. "Okay, let's wait a bit before we try that again," he thought to himself. At least he thought he had thought it to himself, maybe he had said it out loud. It didn't really matter, he was pretty sure he had checked to make sure no one had been around. Hadn't he? Why would he do that? He was here to...?

The fog lifted from his mind suddenly, and he jumped to his feet. Again, a bit of a mistake. He dropped to his knees, but now he could see the results. Things hadn't quite gone according to plan. There was a small, slightly smoking crater in the ground a few feet from him. Bits of debris were scattered all around. He groaned. Looks like he was back at square one. He took out his project notebook, and scribbled in it very quickly.

'Test 03 on project 01 - failed. Observations: 3~4" depression crater, debris scatted in ~10' blast radius. Analysis to follow.'

He shut his notebook, and quickly began cleaning up the area. This might have attracted some attention.
