Can you tell me which flower's going to grow?
by Jessica Zeworth
Jessica’s mom had been overexcited and couldn’t wait until Christmas to send her daughter a package. For once, Jessica didn’t mind her mother’s uncontainable excitement one bit. This package wasn’t filled with some kind of Alopecia miracle cure (like most of them were) or really ugly hats (which was also the norm). No, this package was different.
Inside was a brand new ukulele.
The Pecari barely contained her own excitement by squeaking over her breakfast in the Cascade Hall and scurrying up to her room. Her old ukulele had been, well, old, and they had been looking to replace it for a super long time. Her mom wouldn’t let her bring the old one to Sonora, something about Jessica being irresponsible. Obviously she wasn’t irresponsible anymore! She had a brand new ukulele. But there was a damper on Jessica’s excitement. It was Friday; she still had classes to go to.
So with a heavy sigh, Jessica attended all of her classes. Normally Jessica liked school and classes, but there was a new ukulele in her room needing to be played! The second year was hardly able to stop bouncing up and down in her seat by the time her last class was over. As soon as they were dismissed, she picked up her bag and practically sprinted out of the classroom.
The girl made a quick decision about where to go and practice. She wasn’t sure other people in Pecari would enjoy ukulele music, and her room was too…not big. The library was obviously not an option and the Cascade Hall was probably loud. The Quidditch Pitch probably had people Quidditch-ing…the Gardens! Jessica grinned. She grabbed a black hat with kitty ears on it (bald heads tended to burn when spending any time out in the sun), her new ukulele, and skipped off to the Labyrinth Gardens.
It took a while, but Jessica found a very pretty spot to sit and play. She sat down on the tree stump and took the ukulele out of the case. Mom had already tuned it and everything! Yes, this was much better than silly miracle cures that didn’t work. She played a few mini songs, to warm up her fingers, and smiled brightly. The ukulele sounded amazing, too! Now, for a song…
Her fingers found the chords and Jessica began to sing. It was MMMbop by Hanson; the song was upbeat and cute. Jessica absolutely adored it…and she loved being able to play again. The girl didn’t hold back one bit, thinking she was alone in her spot in the Gardens. When she played the last note and heard a quiet clapping, she realized she wasn’t.
“Oh,” Jessica blushed a little and smiled at her audience, “I didn’t see you there!” She paused and felt really awkward for a moment. “My mom sent me a new ukulele!”
OOC: If whoever is replying is interested, this is the version I think of Jessica playing: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XjH_a7J-BcM However, it’s a solo version, and she sings a little higher.
