Spreading some Christmas cheer! Tag: Cooper by Jessica Zeworth

Jessica Zeworth was very, very happy to be back at Sonora.

She loved her mom. Truly, she did. But if there was one thing Jessica hadn’t missed about being at school and away from home, it was her mom’s constant fixation on finding a miracle cure for Jessica’s Alopecia.

She had been under way too many treatments and thought maybe, just maybe, the options would run out sooner or later, but no. Her mother always seemed to find another kind of treatment for Jessica to try. “No more after this one sweetie, I promise.” And every time, Jessica believed her. This holiday season, the first year had gotten the chance to try some miracle pill with some name too long for her to remember or pronounce. Jessica couldn’t eat Christmas dinner; she had spent most of her holiday sick in bed. Where the heck her mother was finding these treatments, Jessica just didn’t want to know, and they always ended up having the same argument.

“Jessa, sweetie, I’m just trying to do what I think is best for you.”

“Mom, being bald really isn’t that big of a deal to me. I don’t
remember having hair in the first place!”

Sighing, the Pecari decided a trip with some fresh air would do her good; she hadn’t been able to do that all midterm. She couldn’t even go play in the snow. Whatever the heck that medication was with the long name not worth remembering had really taken a toll on her this time. The circles under her eyes weren't as bad as they had been a few days ago, and she wasn't as unhealthily pale as she had been, but she still looked, and felt, a little off. Stupid miracle treatments...

Next time, if the miracle cure was a pill, she was just going to hold it under her tongue and spit it out when Mom wasn’t looking.

Having tied a blue scarf around her head and wrapped herself up in a black hoodie, blue jeans, and sturdy black sneakers, Jessica found a bench in the Labyrinth Gardens and sat down with a happy sigh. It was still cold outside, even winter in Arizona could be chilly, but Jessica didn’t mind. She pulled her backpack on her knees, fishing out a super awesome Muggle book (The Knife of Never Letting Go was action-y and she liked it). Her fingers brushed against her present for Cooper Abramson. She smiled to herself.

It wasn’t like Cooper was her friend or anything; in fact, she was pretty sure Cooper completely hated her. Still, Jessica had made a mess of Charms class that day. Getting him a present just seemed like something to do about it. It wasn’t elaborate or anything, just a simple black baseball cap. He seemed to enjoy sleeping in class or not looking at people or whatever, so he could pull the hat over his eyes if he wanted. Jessica just thought it was a good idea and, being the bald girl, specialized in purchasing headwear. Now, the only problem was getting the present to Cooper. She could never find him; he had some tendency to vanish from time to time…

Hey, there he was! Instead of calling out to him (if she was Cooper, she’d just keep walking and pretend not to notice her), she pulled the present out of her bag, snuck up behind Cooper, and stuck the hat on his head with a grin.

“It’s a Christmas present.” She stated. “For making such a mess in Charms and ticking you off.” She took a step back to look at Cooper in his hat. “It looks nice on you.” She finally said with a smile. “I guess I’m good at picking out hats for guys, too. I better be good at this.” She joked, touching her own scarf. “So…amends?”

Cooper Abramson

Christmas cheer is not butter. It was not meant to be spread by Cooper Abramson

Cooper wasn’t entirely sure how to handle the Christmas Break he had just returned from. It had been weirdly...traditional. They’d all sat around the Christmas tree in the apartment and had cookies and cocoa and that sort of thing. Cooper had wedged himself in a corner, glaring at everyone and refusing the offered cookies. Melody had totally attached herself to Garen—Cooper’s hackles rose and he shook of a growl as the thought once again passed through his mind—and Kat just made him mad because of how much Melody liked her. Ever since his last full moon at Sonora, he had avoided eye contact with that one, and it had really been the last straw when Abby, who had disappeared herself into nowhere at the beginning of the break, walked in on Christmas Eve.

They had woken up in what Cooper could tell was a new house, even though his and Melody’s room looked exactly the same, which had freaked him out to no end even after Jessie and that one had explained that this was their new house to everyone. He didn’t trust them. It smelled different, it looked different, and Cooper hated sneaky things anyway. He hated surprises. Those were sneaky, and you could never tell what was coming next with sneaky people. Cooper liked to know what was coming next, and so far their stupid weird new family had done nothing to assure him that he knew what was going on in any capacity.

Anyway, Cooper had decided that he just wanted to go outside and freeze to death as soon as he arrived at Sonora, and had accordingly entered the Labyrinth Gardens wearing only a black t-shirt and a pair of blue jeans with the new sneakers he had gotten for Christmas. The brown-haired, brown-eyed boy frowned as he stared at the new Nikes. He was unaccustomed to receiving new clothes like that. Usually it was hand-me-downs or something like that, or at least off-brand, cheaper wizarding alternatives to Muggle brands. It was weird. He hated it.

As he walked, he debated what to do about the whole Kat issue. Although Abby’s sister was disgustingly pregnant at this point and he didn’t even know why she was sticking around, Cooper had also heard it mentioned that she was leaving once the baby came. Good. Riddance. But why did she have to leave then? Why couldn’t she just leave now? And take Abby with her. It wasn’t exactly that Cooper hated Abby more than the rest of them. It was just that if he had to put up with a zillion people in that stupid house he was going to scream. Just because Melody liked them more than him.

Kicking a tuft of grass angrily, Cooper stopped dead in his tracks as something appeared on his head, partially blocking his vision, and accompanied by a person’s voice. Not just any person. That annoying, pain-in-the-tail stupid idiot bald girl he met in that man’s class just before Midterm.

“What the hell are you doing?” the twelve-year-old turned around and snapped, interrupting the girls spiel as he glared daggers at her. “That’s my head. Don’t. Touch. Me.” and with that, he took off the thing on his head and threw it at Jessica, still glaring daggers.

Then we can...pass it around! by Jessica

“What the hell are you doing?”

Jessica blinked a couple of times and tilted her head to the side. Well, he was being extra cranky. Did he not have a good break too? On top of being sick the whole time, thanks to her Mom and her stupid miracle treatments (which had been a Muggle treatment this time around; the magic ones could be even worse), her dad had been on lots of business trips. By the time he had gotten back, Christmas day to be exact, Jessica was too sick to continue the treatment anyway.

She caught the hat before it could fall to the ground and frowned at Cooper. “Okay, noted.” The halfblood sighed and looked at the hat. She was getting tired already. I swear, if the next treatment is a Potion, I’m dumping it in the sink. I’m so tired of these things. Her frown and her tired look vanished quickly, quick enough for someone to think they might’ve imagined it. It wasn’t a big deal; she was back at Sonora and that was how she liked it!

“I won’t touch you.” She stated. Jessica paused for a second, then held out the hat to him. Time to try again. “It’s a present.” She said again, firmly, but with a smile. “I saw it, and it made me think of you. Go ahead, take it.” She stared at him for a second before adding, “You are going to take this hat, and we are going to make amends. Understand?” Jessica wanted a friend, Cooper looked like he needed a friend, so she was going to keep trying. She grinned. “I’m really not that awful, so you should stop hating me. It doesn’t seem very fun to be so angry.”

Christmas is not a breadbasket either by Cooper

For a minute, it looked like freaky bald girl was actually going to take the stupid hat and go away, just like Cooper wanted her to, and good riddance. She also looked like she was going to pass out or something for a second, which the Aladren thought would not be so great. After all, if freaky bald girl passed out or something it would probably be his fault and then he’d have to go see the stupid medic whom he hated and tell her something was wrong with freaky bald girl. She looked sick all the time anyway, sort of like he did after a bad full moon, but Cooper knew better than to think she was actually a werewolf. He knew that whatever was wrong with her (and whatever mental disease she had) was probably a result of her freaky bald disease. If he was lucky, it would be something deadly, and then she would die and finally leave him alone. But of course, he wasn’t that lucky.

Just like he wasn’t lucky enough for her to actually take the hat and leave him alone. As soon as she continued the conversation, he knew that he was in trouble. Cooper groaned and rolled his eyes. He hated girls, and especially the freaky bald ones. And the pregnant ones. And the sisters of the pregnant ones.

At least she wasn’t dumb enough to touch him again. But she was dumb enough to try and continue the conversation and give him the dumb hat. He didn’t want presents, especially presents from people he basically didn’t know who really annoyed him. It was just something he wasn’t interested in. He barely put up with Christmas as it was, and now he was getting ambushed at school by people too? That was just plain annoying. Cooper glared viciously at his yearmate as she kept talking. Hate. Hate. Hate.

“I don’t hate you,” he snapped, grabbing the stupid hat for effect before he realised what he was doing. Dragon snot, he’d just fallen into freaky bald girl’s trap. Now all Cooper could do was put the hat on his head and pretend it hadn’t come from her. “I just hate you,” he finished somewhat lamely, before mustering all of his glaring and snapping powers for an additional “A LOT” before crossing his arms and glaring at Jessica once more. “Now will you leave me alone and go to stupid girl things with your stupid girl friends?”

It could be! by Jessica

If looks could kill, Jessica would probably be dead many times over by now, thanks to Cooper and his eyeballs. Jessica wasn’t the type to notice that, though. And even if she was, she didn’t pay any attention to it. The eleven year old found life was easier that way, treat people the way you wanted to be treated and all that. Somehow that rule didn’t seem to apply in the real world. Oh well, sooner or later it would pay off.

And paying off it was!

After declaring that he didn’t actually hate her, Cooper snatched the hat from her, and he even put it on his head. Her smile brightened. He actually took it. He really, actually took it! Jessica couldn’t ask for anything more. Actually, yes she could. Friendship would be nice. Gift accepting was definitely a start.

“I just hate you, A LOT.”

Jessica couldn’t help but giggle. She quickly covered it up with a small cough, then putting on an I-Didn’t-Just-Laugh-What-Are-You-On expression on her face. It was one of the more serious facial expressions she knew how to do, but the fact that her eyes were practically dancing in her inner laughter betrayed her attempts. Whoopsie.

The girl frowned for a second before shrugging. “Well, I would go do stupid girl things with my stupid girl friends, but I don’t really have any of those.” She paused for a moment, thoughtful. “Actually, you’re the only maybe, sort of, any kind of friend I’ve had.” Ever. She grinned. “I think most people are put off when they see a blonde girl, y’know?”
