As usual, midterm arrived accompanied by a blanket of crisp white snow across the school grounds. The hedges of the labyrinth glistened with frost, and the air was still as most of the desert wildlife had fled from this sudden alteration to their habitual climate. The snow and ice would not surprise those who had previously witnessed Sonora during the holiday. However, the large red and white flag of Greenland that rippled over the entrance to the maze might alert them to other new additions. Once the flag had been viewed, it was likely a person would notice the pack of sled dogs happily trotting round the entrance, waiting to be fed, petted, and harnessed to a sled for an enjoyable ride around the gardens. A short distance away from these animals, a large noticeboard had been erected. With the same flag at its top, the text read:
Though physiographically a part of the continent of North America, Greenland has been politically associated with Europe for the past thousand years. Greenland is, by area, the world's largest island that is not a continent. It is the least densely populated country in the world. The total area of Greenland is 836,330 square miles, of which the Greenland ice sheet covers 81%. Greenland today is critically dependent on fishing and fish exports. The shrimp fishing industry is by far the largest income earner. A majority of the population speaks Greenlandic, most of them bilingual, but some monolingual. The culture of Greenland has much in common with Inuit tradition, as the majority of people are descended from Inuit. People continue the Inuit tradition of ice-fishing and there are annual dog-sled races. Association football (soccer) is the Muggle national sport of Greenland. The nation is not yet a member of FIFA because it cannot grow grass for regulation grass pitches. However its Quidditch league is world class, and Greenland holds the impressive records of most World Cup wins (189 triumphs) since the championship was initiated in 1473.
These dogs will not race, but they are friendly, and if you desire a gentle ride around the gardens to admire its wintery beauty, they will be happy to oblige.
The sleds would comfortably hold two adult riders, and the dogs had been directed to take their riders along a scenic route to the centre of the maze. Here would be found a frozen lake, with equipment and instructions for ice fishing.

When everyone came to the discussion of whether or not they would go home for midterm, Demelza's answer was easy. No, she would not be going home for midterm. It was so boring at her house during midterm! The only one of her siblings that were coming home was Kat, and she really didn't want to spend a whole two weeks or so with Kat and Glen. Besides, Mom had sent her a letter (the same day that Paul and Jamie had sent her one, strangely) explaining that Kat had a few worse problems going on and that Demelza should send her a present. Demelza was a bit worried for her little sister: what problems were these? They couldn't possibly have been worse than her cerebral palsy that she already had! Demelza didn't appreciate that her mom had left her hanging, but she tried to let the idea go: Kat always got sick, and she always pulled through.
The letter that Paul sent Demelza made her laugh in the most cruel way. Gosh, Paul was such a DRAMA QUEEN! Something about him wanting to break up with his girlfriend was involved, and then he asked her to write him a Christmas song, because she hadn't written one in a while. Demelza generally stayed out of drama at Sonora, and she liked it that way. Besides her and Starbuck not really being cool, she got along well with the people she hung out with, which basically included Delilah and Jude. Demelza found that it came in handy having a best girl friend and a best guy friend. If she had it her way, Demelza wouldn't talk to Starbuck, but she realized that that really wasn't what she wanted. She wanted to make even with Starbuck, but she just antagonized her so much... urg. Demelza couldn't stand her at times. And then Nina was really cool, but Demelza had a feeling that maybe Nina jut didn't like her much. She couldn't figure out why a lot of people didn't like her. Ok, so yeah maybe she was annoying, but she to be nice, unlike some people! Maybe Demelza wasn't the smartest and most considerate when she was hyper, but people would just have to deal with her being like that! She didn't realize when she did it half of the time! It was hard to find someone who liked her for her. Well, at least her friends did.
Then Jamie's letter just explained how much fun he was having on tour, basically. He seemed really excited when he wrote that his girlfriend, Katie's, little sister was going to RMI next year. Demelza guess that he wanted Katie's little sister to be friends with Kat or something. But Demelza had met her before, and she was more of the hyper, Demelza type of girl, so she doubted that Kat would want to be friends with her. Kat was a lot more quiet, but apprently she did make a few friends. And an enemy. That made Demelza laugh, because she had a few enemies of her own.
Right after she got these letters on the first day of midterm, she set to work, first replying to Jamie because she wouldn't have to send a little extra with his. after that, she realized that she had to write a song for Paul. She thought really hard up in her dorm, but she could't think up any lyrics. Of course, this meant that she would have to go to the gardens to she could think, because she concentrated better in there. Little did she know, however, that her sacred garden had been transformed! She was completely confused when she saw a HUGE flag of Greenland (she only knew it was a Greenland flag because a sign told her so), but she ran right past it when she spotted a pack of racing dogs. They were so cute! She ran up to them, petting them all, and down on her knees hugging them. Demelza loved animals! There was a sled connected to them, so she figured "why not let them give me a ride?" It would be so much fun! She would have to go very slowly, though, so she could concentrate on her writing.
"Alright, Rudolf, you lead the pack, but don't go too fast, pretty please!" She said to the leader, giving him a rub on his back at the same time. She climbed in the sled, quite alone, and took out her Self-inking quill and some parchment on a clipboard. She shouted "HY-YEAH!" really loudly to signal that it was time to go, and she started giggling to herself. That was fun to say! But then the dogs moved, so she sat back in her seat, enjoying the white beauty of the garden, despite how cold the brunette was in only her school robes. Her chocolate brown hair flew back behind her, even from the slow speed that the dogs were moving.
The beauty of the gardens helped her write lyrics to her song. She came up with the tune at the same time in her head. "Snows falling down, like knuts dropped in a well. Mmm, it'll never been same when more falls n' it's playing the "lame duck" game," She sung quietly, staring absentmindedly at her knees. Yes, Demelza actually did listen in Muggle school once, but she doubted that Paul would know what she meant by "lame duck" game. It had something to do with the Muggle government, but it fitted perfectly with her song. Although she had yet to know the point of her song, she still kept on going. But her head snapped up when she sensed someone by her and the dogs stopped. "Hello!" She said brightly to the person. "Would you like to ride with me? It's loads of fun, and the dogs are so cute, aren't then!" She said, grinning. She did absolutely love the dogs. She quickly stowed her quill and clipboard away under her feet, moved over in her seat, and gestured the person to sit by her.
