Wandering by Tawny Brockert

Over the previous summer, Tawny had come to the conclusion that she actually liked being at school better than being at home and midterm had only enforced those feelings. At school, people didn't necessarily compare her to Pippa quite so much and certainly not to Melora. People here wouldn't necessarily even realize Pippa was her sister, given how many Brockerts were around...and Tawny did her best to encourage them to think otherwise. If people asked who her sister was (as she'd only claimed to have one) she tended to tell them it was Chelsea. (She picked the older girl rather than Nina because last year she'd said her sister was older.)

And why shouldn't she? The fifth year was popular. Chelsea was a somebody . Pippa wasn't. Not here. As far as Tawny could tell, her sister was only friends with that pathetic baby, Nathaniel. Actually, Tawny had suspicions that Nathaniel wasn't even the type that liked girls.

Of course, Chelsea or Pippa-or even Nina or one of their other relatives-could blow this for her at anytime. Tawny sincerely hoped that neither Quentin nor Alessa had the Brockert family tree down. Maybe she could even fool them into thinking Chelsea was her sister.

Nina, on the other hand, Tawny was pretty sure knew better. She wasn't a hundred percent sure the younger Pecari was Chelsea's actual sister but she was pretty sure both were the family patriarch's great-grandaughters. Nina might know that branch of the family better than she did.

Perhaps, Tawny should have claimed to be an only child. It would have been so much simpler.

The other reason she preferred school to home was that, despite classes and school work-some of which Tawny didn't even mind, she loved potions in particular-she still felt she had more freedom at school. Especially in Pecari were manners weren't especially important. People weren't always watching her here. She wasn't always considered the bad one.

Things could have been better at home too. If Grandmother Royce wasn't so involved. If her parents weren't so spineless and would stand up to the old woman. If they didn't all love Pippa more than her.

School wasn't perfect of course. Tawny didn't have many friends herself. She liked to think it was because the other students just weren't her type of people. The firsties in her house were rather irritating and most of the other girls were so prissy. The only other girl about her age that she didn't have an immediate problem with was Alessa.

Maybe she should introduce herself. They were cousins after all. And, aside from that, stick with the boys.

That brought Tawny to another issue. Jose was supposed to be her friend. She had thought they were friends. However, suddenly, he was pretending to be a firstie.

This made her mad. Sure, Tawny could understand lying and pretending to be something you weren't. She did it all the time. The issue was why he wanted to be a first year. Wasn't his own year of Pecaris good enough? Meaning specifically, as it was just the two of them, wasn't Tawny good enough? Was he going to be just like everyone else? She was never liked best.

Well, then, if he didn't want to be part of their year, be grouped with her then maybe Tawny should be prefect when the time came. After all, she was the only second year Pecari, now wasn't she?

She hoped the staff would see it that way.

Suddenly, Tawny heard someone approach. She stiffened. Hopefully, it would be someone who didn't irritate her.

Oh! Hey there! by Jose Hernandez

OOC: Realizing that you posted this a few weeks ago, I'm going to assume this is taking place about midway into the semester instead of towards the end. BIC:

Jose liked spring in Sonora. Though the weather charms at the school kept winter from becoming too bitter, it was still far too cold for Jose's California sensibilities. Plus, the spring brought out fresh life in the gardens, and he just felt like he was coming out of a dark cocoon when the sun shone so brightly overhead and he could walk outside without wearing his coat.

Happy with the world, Jose wasn't quite skipping down the Labyrinth paths, but every few steps, he'd jump up and try to touch his hand to the top of the hedge line bordering the path on either side. Still no taller than an average first year, he was mostly managing to scratch up his hands and arms on twigs and make the hedge line shake with impact as he half fell into it. He was not the least bit discouraged. Someday, he'd be able to reach. Even if wasn't growing as fast as he'd like, he was pretty sure he was ability to jump was improving.

What did make him come to a sudden cessation of his current pursuit was the appearance of another person as he turned a corner in the maze. Forgetting entirely about the top of the hedge line, Jose broke into a bright smile. "Tawny! Hey! Long time no see!"

He wasn't entirely sure how or why that had happened. They'd been cool last year, but this year . . . Jose was pretty sure they hadn't done much more than exchange pleasantries and he suddenly felt really bad about that. He was at the same school two years in a row. His old friends weren't gone just because he'd been making new ones.

"Wow, seriously, we shouldn't let that happen again. How've you been?"
