(OOC: Co-written by the authors of Elly and Irene)
The invites had been sent out only that morning – Elly didn’t want staff finding out, or someone accidentally telling Saul about his surprise party. Then it just wouldn’t be a surprise. After some deliberation, Elly and Irene had compiled an invite list that included select sixth years they thought would be happy to come (Briony and Pepper of course, Geoff Layne because he seemed a lot less stuffy this year, and Morgaine, because it hardly seemed fair not to ask her), the entire sixth year (except Steven because he seemed evil and Paul because Elly just knew he wouldn’t come) and just Irene and Jae from fifth year. The girls had originally considered asking the entire Pecari Quidditch team, to give them an opportunity to offer well wishes to their captain, but Elly had decided if they did get into any sort of trouble, it was best they were all in the upper years (and she didn’t want the entire Pecari team in detention at the start of the next Quidditch season). Then, because there were other seventh years invited, not just Saul, Irene had made a banner that read ‘So long, Seventh Years.’
To Irene, the whole thing seemed surreal. It had been Saul who lead her to her classes her first day. The thought tugged on Irene's heartstrings as she felt the reality of time. Saul was already leaving.... Where had the time gone? Soon it would be Irene leaving Sonora, and Elly before her. What was Irene going to do without Elly? The thought was almost panicking. What if, after her older friends were gone, she had no friends? Would she wander the halls of Sonora, being the ‘weird girl’? Irene desperately wanted to keep Saul and Elly there with her, so they could all graduate together...
The party was scheduled for two nights before they all left for the summer. It started at 11pm – an hour after curfew. All exams were over, classes were finished, and all that remained was to pack. And party. This particular affair, planned to be much quieter than Elly’s normal parties, would be held in the gardens – naturally – in a clearing that happened to contain a rather battered-looking wooden swing hanging from an old ironwood tree. Earlier that evening, Elly and Irene had decorated the place with the banner, and had managed to catch a few glow worms in glass vials. In the night-time they would produce a little atmospheric lighting. Elly had found Simon earlier in the day and asked him to please leave the decorations were they were for the time being – she promised to clear them away after the party.
As for getting Saul to the party itself, Elly knew she might not be able to coax him out to the gardens after hours without a real reason. So as it was getting late, as the three of them sat doing nothing much in the commons, Elly said, “So, Saul, I got this surprise for you. It’s out in the gardens, and you have to see it now.” As usual, she was smiling, and her eyes were alight with that mischievous glint that would by now be so familiar to her friends. “Are you coming?”
Irene and Elly stood to leave. Irene picked up her schoolbag which, instead of being full of books, was full of a few sandwiches as late-night snacks, and lots of pepperoni. Elly’d had to charm the bag to stop it smelling so strongly of the meaty snack, because Saul would have been able to identify it immediately. If necessary they would use that as encouragement to get Saul to come along.
Some minutes later, three Pecaris were sneaking out of their commons by the light of their wands. They were a great team, Irene thought as they snuck through the maze, creeping along through the labyrinth until they entered the clearing, where a couple of other people had already gathered. The crowd looked larger than it was because of the final decoration Elly and Irene had installed: life-size cut-outs of Meredith, Echo and Brett stood around the clearing. As they entered the clearing, Irene looked around, satisfied with their handiwork. Elly had done a fantastic job and she had worked so diligently in order to pull this off. Irene wouldn't be surprised if she had put off studying for exams just to figure out the perfect sandwiches to carry with them. This was the proper way to end a year. Why hadn't she done this before? This was fun! Irene thought back to her first year, meeting Saul and Elly as she tried out for Quidditch. In those years, she had played reserve under the ruling of the Cravens. Now it was Saul's reign, which would be coming to an end soon... Elly would be taking over, to serve another rockin' Quidditch term. Irene felt so strongly for everyone around her and emotions seemed to be running strong this night. She was going to miss these guys after they left her.
“Hey,” Elly said, greeting those already there with a smile. “I’ve got gobstones and exploding snap. Irene has the food.” Elly grinned and winked at Saul The Guide – he could hardly just leave Sonora without them making a fuss.
Irene held out the sandwich bag, "So what're you hungry for?"
Saul had no idea what the 'surprise' was that Elly and Irene had waiting out in the Gardens, but he grinned and followed them out of the Pecari Commons. Though genuinely curious what they were up to, all his guesses as they walked through the darkened paths were so wild even Saul knew they were unlikely. Of course, this was Sonora, so who knew? Maybe they really had found a magic beanstalk that led to a giant castle in the sky.
He recognized pretty quickly that they were heading toward the swing, but as they entered the clearing, he was still surprised by the banner and the people there - even Echo and Brett were there, in effigy - but so were a good number of other actual people and this was after curfew, after all. Not exactly the time of day he would have guessed they would have pulled a surprise party. But then, it was Elly and Irene.
He laughed and clapped his hands and grinned at his friends, caught both of them in quick hugs, and then looked into Irene's bag and his hand closed around the pepperoni almost by divination, and his nose caught a whiff of it as it escaped the confines of the charmed bag. "Pepperoni!" he exclaimed with joyful enthusiasm, coincidentally answering Irene's question. "You guys are the best friends ever!"
Then he turned to the rest of the party-goers. "Congrats to everyone graduating! It looks like Irene brought food. Eat up!"
