"Chrissy's getting married? I didn't know she was seeing anyone…
Jennifer had forgotten that Jake (naturally) wasn’t quite as up to date on the goings on of the seventh-year Crotalus girls as she was—after all, they were the ones she’d spent the most time with recently (ie at the beginning and end of days in the dorm room), and had for the past several years, so it was assumed that the people she talked to all knew the same information. “She’s…not, really,” she replied hesitantly, not entirely certain that this path was one that should be gone down. “Her parents arranged a marriage for her, a few years back I think.”
It was a strange thing to be discussing with her boyfriend, not because of her roommate’s potential circumstances, which were unfortunate, but more because Christine kept thinking perhaps the same route might be the best option for Jennifer. Jennifer didn’t really have any illusions about what was going to happen with her and Jake; he was going to discover the high-life of a professional quidditch player (because he would make it big) and decide she wasn’t worth it anymore, and she, more likely than not, would end up marrying one of her mother’s friends’ sons like her mother wanted. That was, assuming she and Jake made it past graduation.
“I actually have no idea what people are planning to do,” she picked up once more as they entered the gardens. “It’s awful of me, but…it just hasn’t come up much. Or I’m spending nowhere near the amount of time I should be doing something besides working and being a wonderful role model for the younger students. Behaving well all the time is actually more than a bit aggravating. I suppose if the same thing hadn’t happened over the holidays, I might be doing a bit better now, but…” She grinned at him while checking to make sure there was no sign of anyone coming near the little corner they’d meandered to. “I don’t tend to let up or relax, do I?”
Assessing that there was no immediate risk of another’s presence, her grin widened. “That’s actually part of why I chose to kidnap you, to tell the truth. You see,” she gently pushed him onto a bench, and then sat on his lap facing one, one leg to either side. “I’ve come to the conclusion that there needs to be a healthy balance between good and bad, but, for the life of me, I can’t figure out how to manage it. So what do you say, Mr. Santoro?” she whispered in his ear, “Willing to help a poor girl out?”

Jake looked momentarily confused when Jennifer answered his question by stating that Chrissy didn’t have a boyfriend but was getting married. But, as she expanded her explanation, it made sense again. It was an arranged marriage. Jake forgot those existed. He wasn’t sure why since much of his extended family still opted for arranged marriages. They were a bit less stiff about it than other families, but they were arranged nontheless. His parents had done away with arranged marriages because of whatever happened to the two of them when they were younger. No one ever talked about it, but they all knew that something happened. As a result of his parents new look on life, the Santoro children had the opportunity to find love and marriage on their own.
“Oh right, betrothals. I forgot about those.” Jake admitted. Actually, the more he thought about it, the more he was sure that most of the purebloods in his year had families who opted to have arranged marriages. He was fairly certain that Jen’s parents had been an arranged marriage and he wondered if that meant that she was supposed to be in one as well. His lips curved downword for a moment at the thought but otherwise kept it to himself. There was no need to talk about things like that now anyway. Today was a rarity in their relationship and he didn’t want to spend it arguing with something like that.
“Aggravating?” Jake’s eyebrow rose, “and here I thought you’d mastered it splendidly.” Jake didn’t know what sort of pressures Jennifer had both as Head Girl and for her school work. He figured that with all the time she did spend dealing with her work, duties, and Quidditch, that it was best if he didn’t add on to the pressure for her girlfriend role as well. His duty was to Quidditch and, on occasion, schoolwork. Of the vast amounts of freetime that he did have, he spent training himself. He had to be sure he was in top shape for when he joined the team in the summer. On top of all that, he had to deal with letters from Anita who had plans for them getting a place in Portugal together. She couldn’t wait to get out of her house and Jake was her excuse for it.
Jake actually laughed when Jennifer admitted to never relaxing. “No, you don’t.” He agreed. It was one of her traits that Jake had grown used to over the years as both her friend and her boyfriend. It certainly caused for a lot of arguments between the two just as his jealousy did, but it was also something that they’ve both acknowledged and dealt with. Not to say that they still didn’t let the little things get between them, but that was inevitable.
Despite Jennifer being so much smaller than Jake, she could still catch him off guard as she did so now with her slight push. His legs hit the bench and he, not so gracefully, sat down with a startled ‘whoa’. His hands landed on the curve of her hips while she settled into his lap. A curious look mixed with pleasant surprise passed across his face while he tried to figure out what Jen was playing at. She usually wasn’t so bold, or at least, not quite like this. Still, he grinned as she whispered in his ear. “I wouldn’t be a gentlemen if I didn’t.”
