Catching the drift by Pepper Jones

Although Pepper was sad to be leaving her family, as always, she was excited about the prospect of getting back to Sonora. Previously, she had always been returned to Sonora late in the evening. It was dark, and it was not sensible to walk out after dark, plus there was the need for supper. But today, she was to be returned early in the afternoon and it was very exciting! She'd seen the snow, of course, every other time she'd returned, but she'd never got a chance to play in it.

So, on the last day of the holidays, the Sunday before classes were due to start again, Pepper Jones arrived back at Sonora. She had had to come straight from church, and so was still wearing her Sunday best. Rather than the usual hand-me-downs from her one older sibling, unfortunately a boy with a preference for baggy jeans and metal band t-shirts, these clothes had been chosen specifically for her and fitted her nicely. Of course, she had had to bulk out the blue light-cotton skirt, floral shirt and little green cardigan with a huge, inherited sweater, some thick grey woollen tights, and her green winter coat, bought specifically for the days she left and came back to Sonora. The outfit was topped off with a cream, crocheted beret, and she felt rather neat in it all, as the only element from Demetrius was covered up.

Her patent leather shoes touched down on the snow with a crunch, the sum total of her experience of it so far. She set out along one of the many, winding paths, staring at the icing-like layer that covered every horizontal surface, forming a scene the likes of which she'd only seen on cards or television. She brushed her fingers along in it, scooping some up and letting the powder trail out between her fingers and couldn't help but grin to herself. As she took it all in, her mind raced with a list of things to do with the snow... Snow balls (no one to throw them at), snow angel (she'd save that until last, because she'd be soaking by the end) snow man. No, snow witch! She was going to build a snow witch!

Practically jumping up and down with excitement, she started trying to gather the snow into a base. She found it was less easy than they made it look on television, and that after a good bit of effort, all she had to show for it was an irregular and slightly dirty lump, and very cold fingers. She was quite proud of her lump though and determined to carry on. She wasn't going to waste her first ever chance to play in the snow, especially as who knew when she'd return to Sonora early enough to have another one?

"You'll be a grand snow witch," she told it, patting some more snow onto it and thoroughly losing herself in her endeavours, "Don't you wor-" she stopped as the would be snow witch darkened, a shadow falling across it. Mortified that someone had overheard her talking to a lump of snow, and embarrassed that they'd know as well how badly her project was going, seeing as she'd just announced what it was meant to be, she looked up, face clashing with the ginger hair poking out from under her hat. \n\n
