On the Snow Covered Grounds by Adam Whitney

Midterm was coming closer and closer to an end, but Adam felt like it was going on forever. He received owls almost daily from his parents. Apparently they hated themselves for forcing him to stay at Sonora during Christmas break. They were missing him and for whatever reason, sending owls would make up for it.

Or so that's how his parents saw the world.

Adam, though bored nine times out of ten, didn't actually mind being here during break anymore. Since the library incident where Adam actually ended up getting a kiss (how or why that happened, he would never really know) from Nicoletta, his midterm had looked all the more brighter.

Of course, the short times he had seen her since then had been amusing and confusing all at once. It was strange to him that after one simple meeting, Adam actually wanted to talk to her. When before she was just some plastic girl, she now was a girl he wanted on a level he didn't know existed before.

He'd catch her eye during mealtimes in Cascade hall or his heart would speed up slightly when he saw her coming down the hallway. They never stopped to talk, never acted as though they knew one another, but he couldn't quite hide the slight smile on his face whenever he would pass her.

It was annoying.

Adam sat down on a bench in the middle of the gardens when he started to become winded. It was chilly out, a cold he wasn't used to. It was snowing lightly. Adam liked it when it snowed...just not when it was in his commonroom. He was leaning back with his head tilted up and his arms resting on the back of the bench. He watched as the flakes fell from the grey sky. He didn't even more from this position even when he became aware of another presence aside from his own.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Miss me? by Nicoletta

Eerieness was a good word to describe what happened to Nicoletta the day she kissed Adam. It was like he knew what she had done, because that very night, she received a letter from Lucien. From that point on, she had tried to avoid Adam, but every time she saw him, she couldn't help looking at him.

She knew it was silly, but when she kissed him, she had felt something deep down. She couldn't explain it, but it had just felt incredible, nothing at all like kissing Lucien. Nothing like it at all. So, what was she supposed to do now? Knowing she shouldn't, she couldn't help wondering though where continuing with Adam would lead, regardless of already knowing the answer. Nothing could come of it. She was already promised, but like a moth to a flame, she just couldn't help it.

So, when she saw him heading for the Gardens, she followed. She wasn't fond of snow and the necessary clothing associated with it. She was bundled head to foot to keep warm, wearing a white faux fur coat, matching faux fur boots, and black pants, and still she was freezing. Shivering, she finally caught up with Adam when he stopped on a bench. Quickly, she joined him, partially in the hope to steal from heat and partially just to be near him.

"Mi-mi-miss me?" She asked with chattering teeth.\n\n

Only in your dreams by Adam

Adam only turned his head when the person sat down beside him. Though his face and body language didn't suggest it, the sight of Nicoletta sitting beside him really took him by surprise. Of all the people that could have sat down beside him, she was the last one on his list. He had never expected to be alone with her ever again. Unless completely on accident.

Though this didn't seem quite like an accident.

His eyes gazed down at her, taking in her appearance with a raised eyebrow. Always the Princess. Her outfit, though cute, was enough to say that she had never lifted a finger in her whole life. Adam was wearing a casual jacket with a pair of loose fitting jeans. Despite not being used to cold weather, he wasn't all that chilled.

Course, it probably helped that Nicoletta was sitting directly beside him, but that was besides the point. Adam wasn't really sure why she was sitting beside him. Other than the occassional glances, she had given him no indication that she even thought about him. Nor did she give him any explanation as to why she had kissed him. Not that he cared to know or anything...

"Not at all." Adam lied. "You haven't even crossed my mind." He turned his gaze back to the sky, but the sly grin that slid across his face should have indicated he was only teasing her. "Cold? I thought girls like you like the frigid air."\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

I thought it was in yours by Nicoletta

If she admitted it to herself, her pride was a little hurt that he hadn't thought of her at all. She thought kissing him would have left a lasting impression. But rather then, let him see it, she moved a little closer. Mostly, to get warm, but also in an attempt to see if he would squirm some.

Giving him a half smile before replying, she answered, "Contrary to popular belief, I don't have a heart of ice."

She didn't have a heart of gold either, which was what most people saw. She did have a caring side for those that she was allowed to associate with. She always got Christmas gifts for her friends, picked with special care. She also cared for her twin. So much that she put up with his girlfriend when she had spent time there over the summer. She had actually been nice to her, so long as she didn't have to do it at school.

Being aggressive, Nicoletta wanted to take him by surprise, like he had done to her in the library. She took one of his hands in her own, and locked her blue eyes with his.

"I missed you," she said softly.

She had. She felt an attraction towards him that she didn't feel with anyone else. She had liked what they had shared in the library, as fleeting as it was, and wanted to push it further even though it was wrong. Oh, so wrong.

Is that what you wish for? by Adam

Adam watched Nicoletta from the corner of his eyes. The bench wasn't all that long and Nicoletta was already sitting close to him, but the fact that she moved even closer made Adam reget sitting at the very end. If he moved anymore, he'd fall completely onto the snow covered ground.

So, he stayed absolutely still. Didn't even breathe, until Nicoletta had stopped moving. He didn't want to show how uneasy he was with her sitting so close, but he couldn't prevent his body was shifting slightly to show his discomfort. There were rules to be had and she was breaking them. She...wasn't supposed to pay him any attention. People like her were supposed to be with others like them. Sure, Adam would have liked t have fit in with them so as to never know what it was like to live paycheck by paycheck. To have servants, but he wasn't like them and he had accepted that long ago and accepted the rules that came along with it. So then, why was she sitting here? Why was she going against what they had been taught?

"Really? And here I thought you could live comfortably with a Yeti." Adam stated casually. His eyes widened when she took his hand. He had to turn to look at her, uncertain as to what she was playing at. "Me?" The look on his face was a mixture of amusement and curiosity. He couldn't figure her out. One moment she completely ignored him and the next she was holding his hand. "I just assumed you went around kissing boys when you were bored." It wasn't really, but he didn't want Nicoletta to really know what he thought about it all because, truth be told, he did miss her. He thought about her constantly because she had kissed him without any explanation and then ignored him there after. It wasn't normal. She wasn't like the other girls and it was driving him crazy. What right did she have to torment him like so? Honestly, what had he done?\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Perhaps by Nicoletta

Could she be hurt? Yes, she could and the words that fell from his lips stung. She may have been impulsive to kiss him like that, but she certainly wasn't a kissing hussie.

Releasing his hand, she got up from the bench, not looking at him anymore. She allowed her long hair to cover her face, as she stared at the snow on the ground. The toe of her boot making an indent in it, as she twisted it back and forth.

The flirting in the library had obviously meant nothing to him. She figured he must charm girls all the time. She hated the fact that she allowed herself to fall into his trap. At the time, she thought she had held the cards, but now she knew better. He did.

Nicoletta Dupree wasn't one to continue a losing battle, so as she began walking away, she softly stated in her best formalality, "I apologize for having bothered you, Mr. Whitney. Be sure it will not happen again."\n\n

Of course it is by Adam

When she let go of his head, Adam stared at her in bewilderment. And even more so when she stood up from the bench so suddenly. What was her deal? Why did she always act so warm one minute and then so cold the next? Honestly, he just didn't get her.

Adam stood up after her when she began to walk away. Her voice sounded...wrong. Not like the Nicoletta he had been speaking to. It took Adam a moment (well, really several) to realize that he must have said something that upset Nicoletta. Perhaps she didn't understand his humor? More than likely, she didn't, anymore than he could understand her behavior.

He strode quickly to catch up with Nicoletta and grabbed her wrist to stop her from going any further. "I didn't mean to make it sound as though you were bothering me." Adam stated. "I'm sorry if what I said upset you, it's just... you went and kissed me back in the library and then ignored me ever since that I just thought it had been no big deal for you." Adam stated, feeling rather guilty for having assumed that of her. \n\n

Confident, aren't we? by Nicoletta

She didn't turn around when he grabbed her wrist, but she listened to his apology. Was he really that clueless that he didn't get it? She wanted him, even though they didn't belong together. Everything dictated that. Every standard she was supposed to have, the only one he met was being pure. So, of course, she would ignore him after kissing him, but what about him? Why did he do the same?

Slowly, she turned to face him, her face still down. She attempted to mask her feelings, as she brought it up to meet his eyes, and failed miserably. It was her eyes that gave it away. Everything was there, everything that she wanted to say and couldn't.

Instead, turning her face away, her profile clearly visible and she lied, "You're right. It didn't matter at all."

She would have continued leaving, but he still had her wrist. She really didn't want him to let it go. She wanted him to tell her that there had been something. That it hadn't all been in her head.\n\n

Shouldn't I be? by Adam

Adam waiting quietly for Nicoletta to do something. Anything. He had apologized for his words, was that not enough? Did she expect something more of him? He didn't understand girls like her. Morgaine, who was Pure, had flat out made it clear her feelings towards him. Well, really, Morgaine just hated everyone, but still, there were no games with her.

But, it was like he was always stepping on glass with Nicoletta. She confused him and excited him. She left him wondering and wanting. These feelings he had never had before about anyone and they terrified him. Were they normal things to feel? It wasn't like he had anyone to ask, really.

His chest hurt when she looked at him. It took him a moment to realize he was feeling guilty because he had hurt her. And it was with this trail of thought where Adam began to question why she was so hurt. Had she meant more by what had occurred earlier than she was letting on? Was the kiss more than just a kiss to her? And, if that were the case, what did all this mean for her?

"Hey..." Adam said softly, saying it again to get her to look at him before finally just lifting her chin in his direction with his free hand. "I was wrong." Adam said slowly. "Truth is, I can't stop thinking about you and I keep hoping you'll come out of nowhere and kiss me again."\n\n

I suppose by Nicoletta

Her eyes searched his. Did he really mean what he said? Did he really think about her constantly, as she thought about him? Why did it have to be this way? Why couldn't he have met standards? Then, everything would be fine. She would be free to express her feelings without worry, as it were though...

Nicoletta knew that she should free her wrist and run before things got deeper. She could do it. She was an ice princess. He had said it himself that she was frigid. And it was true, she was. She upheld to her beliefs, so much so that she had chosen not to associate with Gwen Carey, all because the girl made the little mistake of talking to someone not on par at the feast. Yet, here she was with Adam. It was hypocritical, but she couldn't bring herself to care at the moment. Not when he looked at her like that.

Instead, she found herself responding by drawing closer to him, "Sometimes, hopes come true."

Closing the gap between them, she kissed him again on the lips, softly. His lips felt warm. She pulled back slightly, opening her eyes slowly to meet his. This time, she didn't run.\n\n

*Grins* by Adam

His heart was racing as Nicoletta's face slowly drew closer to his. He honestly didn't believe that Nicoletta would ever kiss him again. He thought that the kiss in the library was her simply teasing him like girls liked to do. She had never given him any indication that she had been remotely interested in him in the past. Was it merely because he hadn't backed down from her on that day that got her locked onto him? Was she testing him?

Because girls were cruel like that and Nicoletta was one of the worst of them.

This time, when Nicoletta's lips met his, Adam was in the right mindset to respond. Her lips were soft, sweet. He couldn't believe that he was actually kissing Nicoletta yet again. She was pretty, with her curly hair, and intens eyes. The kind of girl Adam would always be drawn too. But, maybe that was simply because she was the girl he was never suppose to have.

The kiss wasn't very long, but it was effective. Once again, Adam was confused with just about everything when it came to Nicoletta. When she pulled away, Adam watched her carefully. He wanted to keep kissing her, but, he needed to know first. "Nicoletta...where...what are we doing?"\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

The inevitable question. Her hand shifting to hold her upper arm, as she shifted from foot to foot. How was she supposed to answer that question? She didn't really know. She knew that she wanted to kiss him more, wanted to be near him.

Unfortunately, it wasn't like she could show him off to anyone. If people knew, she would be more of an outcast then Gwen. Undoubtedly, her parents would disown her and no one in the respected wizarding community would marry her. So, how to answer? Maybe, she should try being honest. She didn't want to be. She didn't really want to think about it.

"Adam," she started, biting her lower lip, "I...feel...I mean I..."

Nicoletta wasn't often at a loss for words, but this was one of those times. She didn't want him to go away, but he might when she finished.

Taking a break, she began again, "I can't help, but feel drawn to you."

Okay, good so far. Another breath, she could feel tears threatening to fall, "I want more with you, but you have to know as well as I do, we can't be together."

Please tell me I'm wrong, she begged in her mind. Please tell me no one else has to exist.\n\n

*Blinks* by Adam

Was that the first time she had ever called him by his first name? Adam couldn't be sure, but it felt like that was the first time he ever heard her say his name. He liked hearing it from her, but with the rest of her sentence, Adam wasn't so sure that would ever be a choice for him.

Which ruined the entire mood for him.

Back to reality. Back to the world in which Nicoletta threw herself into. Back to the only thing that ever defined her. Back to the only thing that ever defined him. The Poor Sickly Pecari Boy.

It digusted them that they could all be labeled so easily. That their lives were ruled by what their families desired. They had no paths to choose from like the poet, Robert Frost, once claimed. No, their's were long since set in stone, walked for them.

"Following the rules, is that what you want?" Adam asked, his voice quiet, but the hint of anger was behind his words. "If that's what you really want, then I'll walk away. Just say it." HIs blue eyes were staring hard at her, challenging her to make a choice.\n\n

You miss alot when you do that by Nicoletta

She didn't like him looking at her like that. A slight tremble escaped from her body. No!Her mind screamed. No, it's not what I want!

Instead, she pulled away slightly. Her dark hair falling to hide her face. In the span of moments, slightly slumped shoulders resolved themselves into a steel spine. Turning back, mouth set in a firm line, her blue eyes now competing with his own. She knew what she had to do, and do it she must before they got closer, before the hurt became deeper.

"Let's be honest, Adam," trained snideness in her voice, "Did you really see us together? By being with you, I would be throwing away everything! And for what? Maybe, for only a week we might last?"

Spinning around, her back now faced him for she couldn't bare to watch what reaction her words might have, "Would you really want to parade me around in front of your friends? I know I don't want mine to know about you."

Goodbye, Adam, she mouthed to herself, tears now rolling down her cheeks. She reached up a hand to brush them away while she waited for him to leave, so she could compose herself before going back inside the school.

Probably by Adam

Her sudden change in demeanor bothered Adam. She had been so vulnerable just moments before. Adam had been able to see the 'real' Nicoletta, if only for a brief moment. And he had discovered that he liked that Nicoletta. She was smart, funny, entertaining, and a sort of beauty that wasn't present when she was showing off this Nicoletta.

It was...disheartening.

And why? Why did she feel she had to act like this all the time? Did she think she wouldn't be accepted if she acted like the real her? Why was she so terrified of acting normal? Or why bother being friends with people who wouldn't or couldn't accept her for whom she really was?

Did she really want a life like that? A life to which she would forever be unhappy? She might not even realize how unhappy she truly was until she was left alone in a cold and empty house with only her own thoughts to keep her company.

Her words were like a knife in his already dying heart. Everything that Adam had thought about, she threw in his face. He was worthless. His family meant nothing. He was dirt. Would he parade her around? Of course. If he really cared about her, he would have ignored all others. But then, Adam ignored everyone's opinions of him as it were. It would have been no different.

Still, he knew she was only saying this because she felt she had to. Looking at her back, Adam struggled to figure out what to do. His body decided for him. Adam moved and wrapped his arms around Nicoletta, hugging her from behind. Mouth close to her ear, Adam whispered, "I'm sorry I'm not good enough. I hope he's good to you." He kissed her jaw line and released her from the hug.

"See you around, Princess."\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
