Where's a firstie when you want to scare one?
by Ash Craven
Ash wandered the paths alone. Sorrel had been being slow, unable to find anything in her trunk (their mother having packed most of it, as the twins were seemingly allergic to such an activity, especially when one of their friends was over) and he hadn't been bothered waiting for her. It made them look clingy, and like they couldn't venture one step into the scawy ole world outside of the commons without having someone's hand to hold. She would catch him up.
As he walked, failing to appreciate the beauty of the early morning sun, the smell of the air, and the sheer awe inspiringness of his surroundings, Ash ran a hand through his ebony hair. It was, as ever, unbrushed. He couldn't be bothered. It always stuck up anyway, even without Sorrel ruffling it constantly (which she did). He occasionally shoved some gel in it, though that only added to how much it stuck up at rough, random angles (and it managed a fair amount of gravity defiance without, to be honest).
Another term... New firsties... Apart from Marc, they'd been moving in packs last night, sticking in clumps in the hall like they were afraid that if they strayed from the pack, the second years would pick them off. Actually, thought Ash, as he flopped down onto the ground (without a second's worth of regard for the laundry spells his mother had cast on his jeans) and leaning against a mossy statue (with a similar amount of disregard for his current T-shirt) that wasn't a bad idea... Muggle borns were gullible for the most part, and even those that knew about the magical world didn't necessarily know the ins and outs of Sonora. Annoying as they could be, he wasn't sure he'd mind if a firstie strayed across his path right now. It might even be fun... For him, anyway. \n\n

Fawn was bored, not having anything to do in the common room. Actually she couldn't master the stupid jig to get back in and therefore needed to wait for an older Teppenpaw to come along and let her in after breakfast, though she wasn't about to admit that, so she decided to go for a walk to ease her cabin fever. After all, there was only so much one could do to entertain ones self when sitting in a hallway in the wee hours of the morning, and she was sure she had done at least ninety percent of those things.
Wandering around the maze sounded nice, so the Cherokee girl decided to give it a shot. Just so long as she didn't get lost, she'd be fine. With Ringo, the Tokay Gecko, riding on her shoulder, Fawn strolled across the dry grass and into the gardens. They were impressive, there were hundreds, maybe even thousands of different kinds of plants. Hopefully none were student-eating ones!
Petting the lizard as she walked, she took a little time to admire the lovely plants, the ones that didn't look dangerous, and wonder what charms must have been used to keep them alive in such harsh climates. As she stopped to look at a particularly interesting blue fern with fangs, the braided girl noticed something out of the corner of her eye.
Sitting next to an odd statue of what looked like a chimera was a boy with black hair. He seemed to be thinking of something, as he didn't notice her, though that may have been due to her stealthy footsteps. Turning to face him, she smiled slightly and politely said, "Oh, hello. I'm sorry, I didn't know someone would be out here this early. I'll go if you'd rather be alone." She didn't want to intrude on someone's privacy or anything, and would not like to upset anyone, especially if they were particularly vengeful. It was better to be safe than sorry, after all.\n\n

Ash looked up as he was addressed. He'd been so busy trying to concoct a scheme, that he hadn't noticed this potential victim at first. He squinted against the sun. A girl. Excellent. He had no qualms about freaking out girls. If she'd been a boy, he might have felt like he shouldn't push his chances, given that there were so few of them. Though he could always have said that he was checking they weren't a wimp. He could use the same excuse if this turned out to be an ok girl (she seemed to have a lizard, after all, which raised Ash's opinion of her a little).
"Nah, you're fine," he said, wondering why she'd bothered to disturb him if she was simply going to ask if he'd rather be left alone. Wouldn't the logical thing have been just to go by? Girls... Firsties... No understanding either of them, and this one was both. "I didn't think," he said, echoing her words, "that anyone would be coming down to this bit of the gardens, I guess that's why you thought I might be wanting to be on my own, huh?" he asked, ad libbing fairly wildly. He wasn't sure what threat he was going to decide there was supposed to be down here, but vaguely aluding to it was scarier than saying 'Oh hello, did you know there's meant to be a [insert scary monster here] down this part of the paths, isn't that terrifying?' "Why else would anyone come down here unless they wanted to be avoiding people, right?" he asked, in the tone of one guessing at what someone had meant. "I wasn't really looking for solitude," he told her earnestly, "I was just wandering, not paying a lot of attention. That's why I stopped when I got here rather than..." he nodded down the path, everything about his tone and face implying there was some terror down there that no one dared speak of, yet everyone knew what they meant, when they said 'y'know'. "There's a difference between wanting some alone time and being suicidal. Going down there on your own is the second one, don't you think?" he asked.\n\n
OOC: sorry it took so long, computer's been down. BIC:
Fawn halfway listened to the boy talking about being alone and nodded. He was apparently chatty enough, so she guessed he didn't mind her presence too much. Still, she wanted to continue her walk and maybe explore a little. Just then something he said made her head snap back to attention.
"There's a difference between wanting some alone time and being suicidal. Going down there on your own is the second one, don't you think?" he asked.
Now what on earth had he meant by that? What could possibly be so bad farther on down the path? They wouldn't keep anything too dangerous in here, would they? He was just probably exaggerating and it would turn out to be a rabid prarie elf or something. Still, his story might have some credit.
"Why do you say that?" the dark skinned girl asked him. "I don't see what could be so dangerous. What's down there?" He may be just crazy, or trying to make her look like a fool, but her curiosity was peaked now. If there really was something dangerous down there she wanted to go and see it. Ooh, maybe it was a dragon! That'd be really cool! Though she doubted they'd keep such things here, one never knew at this place.\n\n

Tell me who that is and I'll react accordingly...

Ash was slightly irritated by the fact that she wasn't hanging on his every word. Not that he wanted wussy little firsty girls fawning all over him and wanting his attention, but when he was telling her that she was risking life and limb, the least she could do would be to look suitably frightened. He smirked slightly as she jumped to attention. This was better...
Realising that a smirk may imply that he was joshing with her, he decided he'd better go for smug superiority, rather than apprehensive and chilling. It was better like this anyway. If he went for apprehensive she'd think he was afraid. Ash wasn't afraid of anything. If he'd ever bothered to read about boggarts, he would have thought himself more than a match for one, because he was sure it simply wouldn't be able to take on a form.
"They didn't tell you?" he asked, raising his eyebrows and continuing to smirk. "Oh," he added, catching sight of the house logo on her robes, "You're in his house. No wonder..." He sighed as if resigned to telling a story he'd repeated far too often. "Last year, some kid disappeared," he said. "People get lost around the castle all the time, disappear for days if they take a wrong turning," brilliant, he congratulated himself, he'd hinted that something was up with her Head of House and that you could disappear for days in the school. Even if she didn't believe his main hook, some part of what he'd said should spook her good. "But," he said, slightly more dramatically, as if getting into the story, "that night, they heard screams from out here. Turns out the last place anyone saw him was heading down that path. Some people say that the statue's meant to be some kind of warning," he said, nodding to the stone Chimera behind him, "Others go further and say the statues actually come to life at night," he scoffed, "That's taking it too far, if you ask me. What I do know for sure is they never found him. Only pieces of him." \n\n
