Spectating in the spectator stands [tag: Gia] by Laila Kennedy

Although Crotalus had not made it to the championship game, Laila was still up and early that morning to cheer on the Pecari team and her friends, Sammy and Joella, to victory. She didn’t own many brown articles of clothing and she didn’t much like to wear brown because she thought it had the tendency to blend in with her brown hair. But she was determined to show support for her friend and so she found the next best thing—a pair of jeans and a white t-shirt, neutral colors that didn’t outright declare a loyalty in either direction. However, she did pay a visit to the MARS room before heading over to the match.

When Laila showed up to the Pecari match, she had painted gold into her hair and left two streaks of gold paint just under her eyes like the grease the baseball and football players put on to reduce glare during a game back home. She had been hesitant to ruin her clothes with paint too, but after some careful consideration, she realized that it didn’t matter—she could always get another white t-shirt, and so Laila had painted a glittering ‘4’ on the back and front of the shirt and ‘MEEKS’ over the number on the back in an arch the way professional jerseys had them done.

“Hi guys,” she greeted when the Donovans arrived and scooted over so they could sit next to her. She might not have always felt like she belonged at Sonora, but she did always feel wanted by her friends and she did love a good sports game. Even if she didn’t always understand all the rules that went with Quidditch such as the reasoning behind the Snitch making up such a huge portion of the win. And as she cheered on her friends, an idea came to her.

“Hey,” Laila said, turning to Gia all of a sudden, her pony tail swinging lightly as she did so. “If I started a spirit club of sorts next year, you wouldn’t be interested in helping me get it started, maybe be my vice-president or something? We could do stuff like organize cheers for the Quidditch matches and if the professors were okay with it come up with spirit days before the matches where we could dress up and play games. Or we could host all-school parties on Halloween and Valentine’s Day?” She tilted her head and moved her shoulders up, an encouraging and hopeful look on her face. “What do you think?”

Cheering for Pecari by Gia Donovan (and Jax)

Gia and Jax left the gardens both in relatively good moods. Gia had just confessed to her brother that she was attracted to both males and females. She had thought for sure that she was some sort of strange person for having feelings for both. She knew that males liked females and occasionally there were males who liked males and females who liked females, but she didn’t know that a person could like both. She thought that Jax and their mother would look at her differently, treat her differently, maybe even hate her. But then Sammy indirectly told Gia that she had feelings for Joella. Gia had thought Sammy had a crush on Jax, so she was quite confused by this news and it had Gia thinking that she ought to talk about her issues with someone. She wasn’t quite comfortable doing so with Sammy just yet, so she had turned to her older brother. Jax had always been there to support her and her mother, his opinion on her situation was rather important to her.

And luckily, he had shown quite the love and support that she had been hoping for. He did not quite understand her dilemma, but he wasn’t prosecuting her or looking at her any differently. That was what mattered the most to her. She wasn’t sure how her friends would take it should she tell them, but she would be happy knowing that, for now, she had her brother on her side.

As they made their way down to the pitch, they spotted Laila in the stands and made their way over to her. Gia was caught a bit off guard by the gold she was wearing all over her hair and face, but she appreciated the support anyway. Jax was technically an Aladren, but he was there to support their Pecari friends. Gia was wearing Pecari colors, but now she wished she had a shirt like Laila’s. “I like the shirt.” She commented with a smile.

Gia was looking up into the sky trying to catch up on the game when Laila grabbed her attention. Gia blinked at her. A Spirit club? What was that? A Ghost club of some sort? Gia wasn’t into ghosts. But as Laila went on to explain what she was thinking about, Gia had the impression that ‘spirit’ meant something else entirely than what Gia was thinking about. “That sounds quite lovely.” Gia started, trying to think of how to respond to the question. “But I am unsure what spirits have to do with Quidditch games? Unless you mean the adult beverages? I do not think the school would allow such things for us to partake in.”

Hopefully soon we'll be cheering for everything! by Laila

“Thanks!” Laila exclaimed when Gia complimented her shirt. “Actually, I can help you make one for next year, if you want that is…” Laila was a little envious of the close friendship Gia and Sammy shared, and she regretted the offer as soon as she made it. The special shirt she had made for Sammy was her shirt and her way of showing support. If Gia got one too then Laila wouldn’t be special anymore and she missed feeling special.

However, Gia’s compliment stuck in her head and Laila started to think about the spirit club, she realised that maybe while the Meeks shirt wasn’t something that made her special, she could have something else. She could start a spirit club, and with Gia who was older at her side she thought the club could be quite successful. Gia’s reaction to her suggestion surprised Laila, however. Growing up in a town where showing support for the high school sports team was the only thing to do, the use of ‘spirit’ in such a situation was self-evident. But this was Sonora and once again Turner’s Point rules were proved to be wrong.

“A spirit club is a club that organises events to pump up the student body and get them excited about things. So for Quidditch games we could make posters and get the audience really involved. That’s what a spirit day is, it’s where you pick a thing and everyone has to dress up, like as firemen or police officers or something. It’s not really for any reason other than for fun. And for holidays we could have competitions or parties…” Laila frowned as she searched for the words to explain her idea. “It’s like, have you heard of the phrase ‘to raise one’s spirits’? Sometimes spirits can be used to talk about emotions or mood. It’s kinda like that!”
