Leonidas was a worrier by nature, and the notice in the Cascade Hall had given him plenty to brood over that he had not expected. One thing he was not concerned about, though, was how the new challenges would affect his Quidditch team. He trusted them to retain team unity even as they were all pitted against each other in the school games, and he was proud of them for being people he could trust that way.
Admittedly, it helped that his review of the teams had shown him almost no pairs of friends, leaving him with the assurance that almost all the teams were doomed to total dysfunction and were not places where people were going to make friends, but still. His team had good people on it. He trusted them. He just trusted them more because he knew the Pitch would be a refuge from the endless misery of dealing with their other teams. There was nothing wrong with extra assurances and finding the silver lining to the prospect of spending months working with a bunch of little girls from other Houses, was there? He didn’t think so.
He still didn’t mention it to them when they met for practice, though, instead opening with a cheery “Good afternoon, everyone!”
He looked around at his teammates, making sure to make eye contact with everyone. Now came the difficult part. “First things first, everyone congratulate Clark – he’s your new assistant captain.” He got through that whole sentence without wincing and was proud of himself for doing it. No one objecting now was no guarantee that no one would finally stop pretending that outside social standing didn’t matter when they were all on the Pitch in the future, but it would be a good start.
“I assume you all know by now that we won’t have any games this year, but we’ll still meet for regular practices, and if you can talk any of the first years into joining up or cause any last-minute personality changes in future first years that you know, please do so,” he continued once he was confident that no one was going to object to their first non-pureblood Assistant Captain in the better part of a decade so strenuously that it came to blows. “We’ll practice with what we have now, though. Theodore, John, I’ll appreciate it if you two watch what our Chasers do and give them advice about how to make your jobs harder.” He really would appreciate it, since he was sure they both knew more about Chasing than he did and that was their weakest area now. “Though I’m going to go ahead and make yours a little harder anyway, John,” he continued. “Since we don’t have games this year, I’m going to start training you to work with Clark so we have some options after I leave.
“Today, though, just try your hand at covering him without getting in his way without any Bludgers and we’ll work from there. Clark, Seek normally, and Jack, Louis, Theodore, you know your positions. Let’s practice some Quidditch.” Or, in his case, watch other people do so, at least for now. Being the leader wasn’t all it was built up to be in his opinion.
OOC: Welcome to practice! If you’re a walk-on, assume Leonidas had you introduce yourself and take turns passing a Quaffle with the Chasers. Posts should be at least 200 words, realistic, and have good spelling and grammar. Have fun!
