Jamie had been smarting pretty badly over being stuck on the reserve bench. It wasn’t totally surprising, given that Rupert and the Anns were in the same year and went to all the same la-dee-dah parties but it was still gutting to have a girl who’d been repeatedly beaten by a novice second year chosen over him. Well, it was Pecari’s loss. He would almost have been annoyed enough to root for the other team, because them being beaten by tiny little children yet again would show Princeton - in case he didn’t already know - what a terrible mistake he’d made, but flying for the rag-tag bunch of misfits was the other reason he was in such a bad mood. Shino had been chosen for her team - if you could call it that - and was going to be beyond insufferable over the fact that she had something he clearly also wanted. Whilst he was still mad at Princeton, he had opted for hoping she would get so thoroughly thrashed that she wouldn’t dare to bring it up at all as being the lesser of two evils.
The only thing that lightened his spirits slightly was the utterly foul weather the morning of the match. His visions of Quidditch mostly involved seeing himself cruise to an easy victory (now whilst Shino looked frustrated and an angry captain berated her in the background) hair whipping lightly in the breeze without getting too messed up. He hadn’t signed up for anything like this. And, he thought, with a thin smile, he doubted Shino had either. There was the possibility of greater spoils to the victors, for having fought in such conditions, but it would be worth it to her looking anything but her usual well-composed self.
He settled comfortably into the reserves tent. He would have liked to be able to brush Shino’s achievement in making the team off, as them just having no other choice. However, the slight flaw in that theory was sitting in here with him. He still thought they might have chosen her for a greater representation of Crotali, given that only two of them had signed up, so there was always that weapon up his sleeve, along with the fact that Teppenpaw only needed one more player for her to not have any team to play on, whereas Pecari was a well established team that he would get to be a part of soon.
“If you want me to hex Shino’s face off before next match, I’d be more than glad to,” he commented to the Teppenpaw boy, “She was the last person who needed an ego boost and she’s just going to be insufferable now.”

The day of the first match, Jake woke up in a good mood. After all, today was the day that Teppalus, a funny combinated word that still felt kinda weird in his mouth, got to show everyone what it could do. They were a ragtag bunch of almost exclusively underclassmen, but Jake felt that his team actually had a decent chance despite Pecari’s experienced and older team. These Teppenpaw and Crotalus kids on the field were scrappy, and they fought hard to even have a team. They wanted it more.
Of course, Jake himself didn’t get to play. He was just going to sit in the reserve tent and watch. Since the roster went up, he had talked himself through it several times, and in the end, he was perfectly fine with that. Mostly as a transfer from Marcus, he had adopted an almost altruistic, for-the-good-of-the-team attitude, so even though he had somewhat talked himself into wanting to be the Seeker, he was proud that the team didn’t actually mandate it from him.
So while his team took to the air, the dark-haired boy sat in the reserves tent near one of the extra Pecari players, Jamie Park. Honestly, all Jake really knew about him was that 1) he was his yearmate, and 2) his sister was the girl Arnold went to the Ball with and had a huge crush on. Still, even with that slight connection (which Jamie may or may not have even realized), he was surprised when the other boy spoke to him, and he was even more surprised by what he had to say: “If you want me to hex Shino’s face off before next match, I’d be more than glad to. She was the last person who needed an ego boost and she’s just going to be insufferable now.”
Jake was just… stunned. The bluntness with which Jamie spoke left the Teppenpaw completely flabbergast, a fact that was very clear in his voice, not to mention the way his bright blue eyes had widened. “Oh my gosh, there’s no need for that!” he insisted. “Really, that’s not necessary! Uzume will do a great job for our team, and I’m proud to be her teammate.” He knew virtually nothing about the Crotalus girl, but she was his teammate, so he felt somewhat protective of her. “I mean, I’m sure she can’t be that bad!”
