It might have been seen as counterintuitive to decide this now that Libby was at school with her and she could hang out with her cousin but Alma really wanted to become better friends with her roommate. Ursula too, but there was a pragmatic side to getting on with someone who you had to share a room with.
And Alma did genuinely like Cecily from what she knew of her. To start with, she wasn’t a complete and total psychopath. Admittedly, that was like…probably the bare minimum somebody could ask for in a roommate, and not even something that would occur to the vast majority of people as most people did not have Topaz Brockert for a cousin. Or for that matter a relative like Uncle Eustace. Alma might not have been harassed by either all that much personally, but it was still something that she thought of whereas people whose relatives were all happy little balls of fluff might not.
Or at least, the relatives that a particular person knew anyway. The second year was pretty sure if you looked deep into anyone’s family, you would find someone unpleasant. It was just that Alma was unfortunate that two of her unpalatable relatives were fairly closely related to her. Granted, what a person felt was palatable was partially down to personal taste, like how Desmond felt about Liesl (and probably vice versa) but there were some people that basically were universally unlikable and those were the ones that she was stuck with.
Of course, it could be worse. She could have had a sister like Topaz or a dad like Uncle Eustace. She could have been closer in age to her cousin or been bullied for being unathletic if she were male, the way her uncle always picked on her brother and male cousins. Honestly, it irritated her to her core that Uncle Eustace had made Christopher sort of…hide. Literally sometimes, but like he was so afraid of showing everyone who he was because he thought that they might make fun of him for not being all that macho. It did not matter that there wasn’t anyone like Uncle Eustace around at Sonora currently, even among the Pecaris.
However, Alma knew very well that her brother had a lot of promising talent as an architect and that he really seemed to want to participate in the Fair. That unlike herself and Libby and Amethyst, he actually did have a real passion. However, Chris was afraid to put himself out there, all thanks to their uncle. Granted, Alma knew that her brother had every intention of doing architecture as a profession -despite that obviously Uncle Eustace was going to inevitably know about that- but for some reason seemed reluctant to put himself out there at school.
Anyway, on the subject of Cecily, not only was she not a psychopath but she also wasn’t the mean kind of Crotalus that Alma had heard about but never actually met. So, since they had to live together, she would like to try becoming friends. One could of course, share a room companionably but not become friends but Alma would prefer to try. Besides, if Desmond could become friends with his roommates, she could certainly be on good terms with her own.
And the Fair provided her with just the thing to bond with Cecily over. So that night when they had both retired to their room for evening, Alma spoke up. ‘Hey I was wondering if you might want to work on a project for the Fair together?”.
