Nausicaa Scapetello

Nausicaa examined the MARS water room with critical approval. It was time once again for the debate club to meet, and she took it as part of her job as president to keep the members of the club on their toes, so to speak. That meant coming up with new venues for the group. The MARS rooms did and adequate job of this, but she knew that more impressive schools had much better resources. Nevertheless, she would work with what she had, perhaps that was some of the lesson Father wanted her to learn along with accomplishing her other task here. It didn't mean she had to like it, but she was certainly not going to whine about things and give up. The weak did that. She was not weak.

The room itself needed to have water featured predominantly, that was its nature, and Nausicaa had decided to go with an ancient Greece theme for today's meeting. Upon entering the door, the room opened up to a warm, sunny, outdoor area. Green hills stretched as far as the eye could see and white puffy clouds drifted calmly across the blue sky. The room itself was focused around a calm lake, the door itself was a foot over the lake water more than ten feet from the closest shoreline. The door sat upon a solid marble walkway that was five feet wide and went about twenty-five feet towards the center of the lake. In the exact center of the lake was a large marble platform, ornately carved, sitting at the same level as the walkway above the lake water. It had tall marble columns around it's circumference which supported marble arches.

A massive marble table dominated the center of the platform, on either side of it were ornately carved wooden chairs. There was also a slightly raised dais with a podium opposite the walkway. Nausicaa nodded with satisfaction as the prairie elves set a platter of Mediterranean fruits and nuts on the table as she had requested, and dismissed them. All seemed to be in order. She took her place at the podium and waited for her club members to arrive.

As the other students arrived, she greeted them and reminded them that the left side of the table was arguing for the topic of the meeting, while the right side was for arguing against the topic. Once everyone had arrived and chosen a seat, she would announce what the topic was. After all, a true debater needed to be able to argue any side of a topic, regardless of what they actually thought about it.

Once everyone was seated, she began the meeting officially, “Welcome again everyone. As usual, I will give you the topic for the meeting, you will have a fifteen minutes to conference with those on your side to discuss your arguments and talking points. After that, we will begin the official debate with the 'For' side of the argument.” She looked at the students on the left side of the table to make sure they understood they would be going first. “Without further ado, the topic today is 'A large, independent, isolated nation for only witches and wizards should be established, thus eliminating the need for the statute of secrecy within its borders.'”

Nausicaa then turned over the large, ornate hourglass made of wood, brass and glass. As the sand began to trickle from the top bulb to the bottom she stated “You may begin your discussions.”

Verdillia was in two minds about the speech and debate club. On the one hand, it felt refined. It was important to be articulate and well-versed in important political issues, and this was a good way of achieving that. On the other, getting into full on arguments was a bit much, especially when she had to talk about something she didn’t believe in. She would have said it was up to the men to debate politics, and up to women to understand it only in so far as to not embarrass their husbands at cocktail parties, but the club was run by a girl. One who was incredibly well put together and probably all the sorts of things Verdillia was supposed to aim for. And so, she had tried it out, and had kept coming, if for no other reason than to gather hostessing inspiration because Nausicaa always made the room look fantastic.

She managed not to let her jaw drop when she entered, finding today to be no exception, and walked confidently along the marble bridge as if she belonged there.

“It’s absolutely stunning in here,” she complimented her hostess. “You know, you should consider announcing the room themes in advance so we can all dress appropriately to set it off.” She’d taken to wearing a rotation of subtly different neat cream tea dresses as her default debate attire, as they rarely clashed badly with the setting, but she would have liked to be able to style it up a little more. For example, she had a beautiful gilded leaf headband that would have worked perfectly for this setting, but she’d gone with silvers and blues in geometric shapes in her accessories instead.

She chose ‘for’ today, hoping that would prove wise. Picking a side without knowing was the worst part of this whole thing. But today, it worked in her favour, as they were talking about a topic she felt very strongly in favour of.

“Oh, wouldn’t that be wonderful!” She beamed enthusiastically at her teammates, making it clear that her contributions on this topic would be more than just dredged up for the sake of the argument.
