An aunt. She was an aunt. That somehow just didn't make any sense to Iris. She'd known it was going to happen for a little bit now, but still. Her stupid brother had done terrible things to her friend and now she was an aunt. She hadn't even graduated yet. Neither had he, but that was his problem, not hers. The thing about it wasn't actually that her brother had produced offspring already, it was that in theory, if she wasn't here at school, she might not have been far off from such a situation either.
Back home on the mountain, probably most of her cousins her age had paired off as well by now. That was the job of the matchmaker, make sure everyone is paired up with someone that isn't related to closely to make sure the next generation happens okay. That was what Aunt Emily had been trying to do with them for the past few years. It was just how their society worked. Billy had gotten lucky, he'd found Ray and got out of the system. Bringing in outside blood was always preferable. She hadn't been able to yet, thanks to Liesl, but so far Henry had been very nice and had bought her some time over break. She should be, and was, very grateful for Henry. Otherwise she might have been hitched up over break whether she'd liked it or not. She would have not liked it.
Now Billy had a kid of all things to take home and show off that he was 'doing his part', even if he wasn't really. She knew he wasn't planning on sticking around the community after school was done, but she wasn't actually sure what he was planning to do. Again, that was his problem, not hers. She had a very eager Aunt and creepy distant cousin at home that she wanted nothing to do with and all that stood in their way was Henry, who may at any point decide that she really wasn't worth all this trouble. Also, was she stringing him along just to keep herself from winding up in a situation she didn't want to be in at home? That wasn't nice, she really should tell him, but then that might be the thing that would make him want to desert her. He really was quite nice, and she liked him well enough, but did she love him? He was really just to nice and everything to get involved with someone like her.
Iris poked at the food on her plate in front of her, not really paying any attention to it while these thoughts ran in circles around in her head. What could she do?
