Verdillia Scurlock

The MARS rooms really were perfect. They could show any scenery without the tedious and unpleasant business of hiking out to it or risking unpleasant weather or irritating insects. It was nature, but tamed and made palatable. Which was a nice metaphor for art itself.

Verdillia had gathered a range of materials, though perhaps a narrower group that Rosalynn would have given people. Whilst she did do some open studios, the point of an art club was also to try new things and improve. And how could people do that if they stuck to doing the same old thing all the time? Admittedly, this only went one way, with the opportunity for people to try more traditional media and subjects. She had some research to back her up, in that most art schools taught core basics such as perspective and observation drawing; if one wanted to break the rules (which she didn't but which she had to accept other people did for the sake of running the club), then you had to actually know those rules to begin with.

And so, as the members entered, they would find themselves in a large open and sloping field, decked in spring flowers and backed with a mountainscape. There we're easels, sketch books and various drawing and painting supplies, along with a large picnic rug, set out with cheese, cold cuts, fruits and juices.

"Hello!" she greeted the art club once most of the regular members had assembled. "Today, I thought we would celebrate the beauty of spring flowers. As you can see, we have the privilege of being in this beautiful landscape which showcases some lovely spring flowers in the foreground, while providing a dramatic backdrop. You can attempt to paint the whole landscape, do some close up nature studies and detail sketching, or create a portrait of a friend sitting in the flowers. There are many mediums available, which is another way to challenge yourself or try something new. Additionally, we have this lovely spread provided by the ever helpful prairie elves, so we can enjoy a spring picnic. I hope you all enjoy it!"
