The Coach

The first years were gathered on the pitch. They had had the pep talk about how this was flying class not Quidditch class. The experienced players had enjoyed some time to do their own thing while the beginners got hovering down. Now everyone had been able to call their brooms to their hands and at least sit on it, the coach called the group back together.

“Alright, we’re all at different levels right now, and that’s okay. It’s going to be that way for a while. But we’re going to do a little group activity. As part of your final exam, you’re going to have to fly from one end of the pitch to the other and back again. Right now, that might seem impossibly far, but we’re all going to do it today. Whether you zip along, or you need to scoot with your toes touching the ground. Everyone’s going to do it today, and then from here on out you’ll get better at doing it. You’re going to take your individual time today, and we’ll also tally everyone’s time, so that you can see by the end of the program how much you’ve improved both as an individual, and as a class. At the end of the year, there will be an award for the fastest, but also the most improved—the person who’s shaved the most off their initial time. If we can get our collective time down by half, we’ll have a celebration. So, rather than every person for themselves, we’ll need those of you who are confident to help the newbies.” It was easy for flying class to split into two groups, and for the coach to have to choose which of them got the majority of the focus, trying to make sure the more confident students were stretched whilst also ensuring the beginners were safe. It was a challenging juggling act, one which felt more like swinging between the two poles and therefore doing half of it badly at a time. There had to be a better way, and this was the option the coach was trying this year.

“Once that’s done, you have a choice of how to spend the rest of the period. You can go back to free play, come to me for advice, or partner up with someone you think needs your help.

“But first, let’s get the time trial done.” The coach gathered them all at one end of the pitch, waiting with a stopwatch—and a keen eye in case anyone’s ride didn’t go smoothly.

OOC: This follows on from a lesson intro similar to this one.

I figured it might be fun to skip the same old 'let's hover/play' and jump into something different that allows everyone to mingle.

Edu Alamilla

Edu was not unfamiliar with flying on a broom. He had lived at the school for nearly as long as he could remember and he'd been on the school brooms before. He'd thought it would be neat to have a broom of his own, but Padre thought it was ridiculous to get one when the school had a pile of perfectly good ones that he could use. 'Maybe when you're older' was the response he had kept getting, so at this point he hadn't asked much anymore.

As such, he was pretty familiar with most all of the school brooms and knew some of their quirks. There was one in particular that was really terrible and he avoided it whenever he could. Thankfully this was one of those times.

He regrouped up with everyone else at the Coach's instruction after a little bit of free flying. The time trials seemed interesting, and he took his turn making decent time. There was definitely room for improvement though. If they were looking to help everyone improve, he'd be glad to help anyone he could. He found one of his classmates who might need a little help, "Hi!" He smiled, "You looked pretty good out there. Do you want to work together a bit?"
