It was a beautiful day to be outside. Iris moved along the garden paths, basking in the brief moment of nice weather. The past few days had been terribly rainy and she was really glad the sky had cleared up for the Gardening Club meeting. She had posted the normal announcements at the start of the year and they had had a few meetings so far. The first one had been to see who all wanted to be in the club and show any new people where the club's patch of garden was located. She'd run through what previous years had done with the garden and over the meetings since then, as a group they'd developed a plan for what they wanted to do with this year's garden.

So, she was immensely thankful about the rain stopping so they could actually get started on the project. Once she arrived at their designated patch of earth, Iris began to set up. The big poster board diagram of the 'finalized' version of their plan got propped on a bench nearby for reference. It was also covered in notes from their previous discussion. The tools she had retrieved from Greenhouse 1's Gardening Club supply shelf and had been floating along behind her were place nearby as well. Those were for anyone who wasn't quite ready to just use their magic. Once that was done, she could finally inspect the state of the garden itself.

As expected, it was a mess. Thankfully the old plants had been mostly cleared out over the summer. It was the students' job to tend it during the year, but nobody was here over the summer so it got cleared out for the next group. That didn't keep weeds and other plants from growing there in the meantime. The rain in this case was both a blessing and a curse, with the ground nearly mud it would be easier to pull out all of the things they didn't want, but it was going to be a messy job to do it.

The other members of the club began to arrive and she welcomed them before starting. "As you know," she stated while gesturing toward the weed infested plot of ground, "today's goal is to get the ground cleared of weeds and ready for our plants. While we're working, if you've got any last minute ideas for the garden, we can discuss them." She gestured at their design so far, "Today will be the last time to make any changes, after we are done here I'm going to take our list of plants to Professor Xavier so he can have them ready for us to plant them at our next meeting. So, let's get to work!"

With the weather doing...whatever it was doing, Lyla was glad she'd packed a tough pair of jeans for Gardening Club. She hadn't expected last year to be quite so muddy, given that they were in the middle of the desert, but the charms on Sonora kept the grounds more like lush plains, and Lyla had absolutely ruined a pair of pink leggings. Nevertheless, this year she came prepared. She helped herself to a bucket-although she had learned the charm for pulling weeds last year, she liked the feel of ripping them from the ground with her hands.

Lyla made note of the patch she was clearing on the planning board. This bit was meant for flowering plants, the stark black and white of the moly showcasing the pinky-purple hues of the vervain and foxgloves.

Despite the fact that the rain had finally let up, the air felt heavy with moisture. The plants would like that. Lyla breathed deep through her nostrils. It smelled like rain and soil and heaven all at once. She worked to fill her bucket, feeling a little bad for killing the weeds when they were only growing where weeds are wont to grow. Maybe she could replant them somewhere else.

"Why do you suppose some plants are considered weeds?" she asked the person working on the patch next to hers, "Aren't they just normal plants that are in the wrong spot?"

Dandelions were the perfect example; both the young greens and the yellow flowers were good for you, and Lyla would go so far as to say they were a vegetable, but most people thought that they were just weeds, popping their golden heads up over all the perfectly manicured lawns in the neighborhood. Lyla could understand wanting things to be orderly, but another side of her wanted things to be allowed to grow freely, all together.
