By the time set for try-outs, Kate had stifled her disappointment about not getting to captain in her one year as the captain in favor of focusing on a bigger problem, which was not having a team large enough to play with even if another team did offer a scrimmage. She really didn’t know what to do about that one, except be glad that if Sophie or Topher were really angry enough to defy the staff with a game after all, they were sure to throw down the gauntlet in front of David Wilkes instead of her. Teppenpaw, after all, was no one’s idea of the team to beat any more than they were anyone’s idea of the House which would rebel against authority; they had done well enough a few times, but still didn’t actually win matches.
Next year, she had a feeling, they would. They’d put a first or second year in as a Seeker, and that kid would take out Arnold in the preliminary rounds and go on to win the Final against Crotalus in the spring without any trouble whatsoever. That, though, wasn’t really her problem. It would be a little bit of a wrench, she was sure, when Alicia came home and told her about it, but she would live with it. For this year, she was concentrating on having less pressure coming at her from one direction while she tried to study for her RATS.
“Hi!” she called to the first people to come onto the Pitch on the appointed day. “Come on over and we’ll get started!”
She kept smiling in spite of the thoughts her gloomier side said they must be having about her as they came together. “Okay, hi, now, everyone! For anyone who doesn’t know me, I’m Kate, and I’m the captain this year. Sadly, I won’t be with you next year when we get back to games, but then you’ll have Derry, who’s awesome, too.” She pointed out her Assistant Captain.
“For this year, we’re just going to practice, and work on recruiting for our team,” she said. “We’re two short on the sign up list, but we can fill those slots. Ask around your friends, anyone, just get them in here and we’ll train them for next year and then have some alternates, too. For now, everyone stretch, get warmed up, and then we’ll throw the Quaffle around in a circle, work on those hand-eye coordination skills.”
When she decided the team seemed warmed up enough, Kate put the Quaffle under her arm, where it was unfamiliar, then kicked off and started the circle. The most pressing thing was really to start training her own replacement as Seeker, getting a new Seeker in who could work for them, but without a full team, just getting them in the air took precedence. Once the circle was complete, Kate feinted toward one team member before tossing the Quaffle toward another, always keeping an eye out for latecomers and walk-ons entering the Pitch below her.
