A good day for flying (Tag: Clara) by Lucian D'Alesandro

Lucian made his way to the Quidditch field and took a deep breath. His second year at Sonora was winding down. There weren’t any matches being played today, nor were there many people on the pitch in general. This made Lucian relax a bit more, for he did not want numerous spectators watching him teach someone to fly.

He had promised to help Clara with her flying before the holiday break, but since he returned to school he had found himself very busy. Studying and learning, as always, was his number one priority. He had become quite the hermit. However, a promise is a promise, and he found that he enjoyed Clara’s company. So, he sent his owl Ludwig to deliver a message to her the night before:

Clara,

I would still like to help you with flying. Meet me on the pitch tomorrow around noon. Hope to see you there.

Lucian

For some reason, meeting her here made him a bit nervous and he wasn’t sure why. He had made himself as presentable as possible before he left his room. There wasn’t much he could do with his now short hair. His mother insisted that he cut it short to prevent him from having long hair by the time he returned home again. As it grew out a little, he started to spike it with gel he brought from home. He had put on a nice buttoned plaid shirt with a brown jacket, but wore his older shoes since they would be in a grassy field.

He put down a blanket he had brought with him, and placed a picnic basket on top of it. He hoped Clara wouldn’t think it was weird, but he thought some snacks would be a nice gesture. He also set down the Comet 140 his father had let him bring back to school. It was a good sturdy broom, and didn’t go much faster than 50 miles per hour. It had a braking charm on it, which would hopefully keep Clara from crashing into anything. He had also brought a helmet with him, just in case.

He sat Indian-style on the blanket and began reading a new astronomy book he picked up at the library. Not long after, he heard footsteps behind him and turned, smiling, assuming it was Clara coming to meet him.

Lets hope so..lol by Clara

Clara was both excited and extremely nervous about her upcoming flying lesson with Lucian. She had tried to practice some on her own during the break, but found herself doing her normal crash landing routine. Once back at school she had found herself pre-occupied with classes and studying. She had almost forgotten about the flying when she had gotten Lucian’s message from his owl.

“Clara,

I would still like to help you with flying. Meet me on the pitch tomorrow around noon. Hope to see you there.

Lucian

She read over the message again before sending him a reply. “Lucian,

Can’t wait to get started. Will see you tomorrow at noon.

Clara

She went to bed that night trying not to imagine all the ways the lesson could go wrong. She got up the day of the lesson quivering with anticipation. As she got dressed she threw on her favorite pair of jeans, her Tower of Terror t-shirt and her tennis shoes. She found a light jacket and reluctantly grabbed her new broom that her grandda had gotten her for Christmas. As she held onto the dark wood she tried to think positively about its first test run. I sure hope I don’t kill us she thought to herself as she left her dorm and headed slowly down to the pitch. She was fairly certain that by now Lucian was already waiting for her and wanted very badly not hurt or disappoint him. He was offering to help her with this interesting endeavor after all with great personal risk to himself. The least she could do is show up on time.

As she approached the pitch she saw Lucian sitting crossed legged on the grass reading a book. Beside him she caught a glimpse of his broom and a helmet sitting next to it. She giggled to herself when she realized he had come prepared for her (at least she hoped he was prepared for her). She saw him turn and smile at her as she approached and awkwardly waved hello. “Hey Lucian,” she greeted cheerfully. “Are you sure you’re ready for this?” she asked him as she joined him on the grass. She laid her broom down across her lap. “Is that for me?” she nodded towards the helmet sitting near him and smiled. About that same time she caught sight of the blanket and the picnic he apparently had brought with him. She rested her chin on one of her palms, resting her elbow on her knee and grinned. “I see you brought us a last meal,” she teased him. “That was very thoughtful of you. So what shall we do first? Should we eat or should we try to get me into the air without injuries?” She continued to grin at her own bad joke as she waited for his reply.

I am optimistic. by Lucian D'Alesandro

“Hey Clara,” Lucian greeted her in return. “I thought I was ready, but the way you asked me that kinda makes me second guess myself.” He laughed a little to let her know he was kidding.

“This is your crash helmet,” he said lifting the somewhat bulky helmet from the blanket and handing it to her, “I figured you might feel a little safer wearing it.” He then laughed at her mention of the last meal. “Nah, I am sure we will be able to enjoy meals after this one. I brought a couple peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, a few apples, milk, and juice. I probably should have asked what you like first, but I took a chance. If you don’t mind, I could use something to eat. I didn’t have much for breakfast.” He opened the top of the wicker basket and moved it between them so she could help herself. He grabbed a peanut butter and jelly sandwich and took a few bites out of them while thinking. “You know,” he began after chewing for some time, “ I think if you relaxed a bit more you would be good at flying. Sometimes when you worry about how well you are doing something, it makes you fail at it…know what I mean?” He recalled a few exams where stressing made him either blank out or perform poorly.

After finishing his sandwich, Lucian stood up and reached out his hand to help Clara to her feet. “Alright, shall we begin?” he asked her smiling. “I see you brought a broom. I brought my father’s old broom. It doesn’t go very fast, is pretty sturdy, and it has a braking charm in case you need help stopping. Would you like to try that or begin with yours?”

I'm glad one of us is..LOL by Clara

Clara was glad for the fact that Lucian seemed to somewhat appreciate her weird sense of humor. Outside of her cousins not many did. She smiled when he mentioned that he had packed snadwiches, apples, milk and juice. "All of it sounds great," she assured him as she reached into the basket and plucked out a sandwich for herself. She had deliberately skipped breakfast because of nerves. Now she found herself completely ravenous. She reached for one of the apples as well. "What you brought is perfect. I love apples," she told him as she placed the apple down on one f her knees. She brought the sandwich up to her lips and took a healthy bite out of it. She almost had to remind herself to chew with her mouth closed.

She found her head tilting slightly to the side as he said what was on his mind. "“You know,” he began after chewing for some time, “ I think if you relaxed a bit more you would be good at flying. Sometimes when you worry about how well you are doing something, it makes you fail at it…know what I mean?” She had seriously never thought about it that way before. She had always been soo focused on trying not to screw up that she never considered the fact that that being so focused was what might have been making her screw up. She nodded her head as she finished her sandwich. "Actually I do know what you mean," she agreed. "I never really thought of it that way before."

She took a few bites out of the apple and tried to settle her nerves. She found herself liking the fact that his dad's broom had a braking charm cast on it. Between that and the helmet she didn't really see much of a downside. "Ya know, between the helmet and the charmed broom I don't really see much of a downside," she commented more confidently then she actutally felt. "It might be safer for everyone involved if we went with your broom." Once she finished her apple she returned his smile and took the hand he offered to get up. Once on her feet she brushed the grass off her pants. She picked up the helmet and not worrying too much about how much her unruly curly hair stuck out from underneath it she strapped on the helmet.

"I would most definately like to try yours before I try mine," she told him trying to sound cheerful. "Okay, Yoda how shall we start this?" she asked, trying to make a joke at the same time. She only hoped he thought it was remotely funny.
