Clara stretched lazily as she awoke to her alarm clock back at the Pecari dorm room. Today would be the day of the Pecari/Aladren match out on the pitch and Clara had butterflies in her stomach. She wanted very much for her house to win the match because afterall she was a Pecari and she wanted to be supportive of her house's team. However, Clara found herself in a bit of a pickle as she dressed warmly for the match out in the semi-freezing weather. While she wanted to root for her house and have them win the match, she also found herself wanting to root for her cousin who was on the Aladren team. She wasn't entirely sure what she was going to do, but she knew that she only had until she got down to the pitch to figure it out. She put on her fir lined snow boots that she had gotten for christmas and zipped up her fluffy jacket with the fir lined hood. She wrapped her scarf with the Pecari house colors on it around her neck and donned her earmuffs. Her aunt Alora had given them to her over christmas break and insisted she wear them if she got cold.
She found a spot in the stands and took a seat where she could see everything pretty clearly. She watched the captains shake hands and then mount their brooms, taking off into the air. She held her breath for the whistle and went it sounded she watched as the players took off. She stared wide eyed as she watched Thad from the Aladren team take a shot at Jade with one of the bludgers. She found that she secrectly hoped it would at least nick Jade for taking Amira's spot on the Pecari team. She had heard from Mira all about how Mir had run the course way better than Jade had and how after even all of that Jade was still chosen as Seeker over Amira. She partially covered her eyes as she waited for something to happen between Jade and the bludger headed in her direction. Look out Jade!! her mind screamed words she couldn't make come out of her mouth. Instead she found herself silently chanting "Come on Pecari! Come on Pecari! Come on Pecari!"
Clara felt her heart sink a little when she moved her hand completely away from her eyes and caught sight of one of the Aladren boys flying with the Quaffle (she was pretty sure thats what you called it) and head towards what she was sure was Pecari's goal post. She held as her breath as she waited to see what the boy would do with it. Already the game did not appear to be off to a good start for Pecari. She hoped that very soon it would get better.

Quidditch! was the first thing that came to mind when Waverly awoke. She had looked out of her window to see what the weather would be like and was startled to see snow. And it was really cold. Having lived in Phoenix, Arizona all of her life, she was used to the excruciating heat and humidity. What she was not used to was the excruciating cold. Living at a magical school was really weird.
Waverly didn't really know how to dress for this kind of weather, but she guessed long-sleeves would do. She put on the Chucks she had worn at the final Quidditch match last year. "Pecari" was still written on the toe-part on both shoes. The words hadn't exactly washed off, but they were becoming her Quidditch shoes. She was wearing her school robe, but underneath was her brown and gold shirt over a white long-sleeve. Jeans, brown hair tied with a gold ribbon, and she was set. She took off for the pitch.
One step outside sent her back in to get a scarf, a hat, and to put on a sweater underneath her robe. The brown and gold shirt wasn't visible anymore, but she supposed it didn't really matter. She had to be warm first! Three layers should be enough, right? At least she had her Pecari-colored scarf.
Waverly went outside again and, though still finding it chilly, was able to run off to the pitch, hoping that by running she would warm herself up. By the time she got to the pitch, she was panting and feeling a little overheated. She walked up the steps to get to the top of the stands on Pecari's side, excited to cheer for her, obviously, favorite team.
She saw the first-year girl, Clara, that she had befriended last term. She smiled brightly at her and joined her. "Hi," she said. She always seemed to come to these matches kind of late. "What's going on?" She sat down to catch her breath, green eyes scanning the scene for her roommate. Aladren had the Quaffle first, but one of the Pecari Chasers reached out for it, and Waverly gasped in anticipation. It was short-lived, however, and she sighed in disappointment, hoping another Pecari Chaser would hurry up and intercept it or something. She cupped her hands over her mouth and yelled, "GO PECARI! YOU CAN DO IT!" She was kind of embarrassing sometimes, but she didn't like to withhold her passions.
Just sitting in this cold made Waverly's hands cold. "I wish I had gloves," Waverly said, sticking her hands into her robe pockets. She had closed up her robe all the way so none of her clothing underneath could be seen. "I like your boots, by the way!"

Clara held her breath as she watched the Pecari chaser almost grab the quaffle and then lose it. Rats! she thought silently, covering her eyes and shaking her head. She still had her hands over her face when she heard a familiar voice say Hi. She smiled up at Waverly and waved slightly. "Hi Waverly," she greeted the older girl cheerfully. Seeing her was the best thing she had seen so far. It took her a second to realize that waverly had complimented her on her boots. "Thank you," she replied politely. "They were a gift from my dad for christmas. It really doesn't ever snow in Napa, but he knew it does here so he made sure I got something warm for the weather. Besides with as much time as I spend at my cousins' house in Oregon during the winter I would have needed the stuff anyway." She laughed lightly thinking about how silly a worrier her dad was sometimes.
She blinked at Waverly's question about anything happening yet and shrugged. "Well so far all that's happened is one of the Aladrens seem to be gunning for Jade. He shot a bludger at her just before you got here, but I don't know if its actually made contact or not yet," she explained as best as she could. "I know Amira wouldn't mind if the bludger did actually hit Jade, but I don't think she really wants to lose just to see that happen." She smiled awkwardly as she thought hard about that last comment. "You don't think she'd really want her to get hurt like that, do you?" she asked Waverly curiously. "I know she doesn't like her, but she can't possible dislike her that much, right?"

"Where's Napa?" Waverly felt stupid for asking, but she didn't really keep track of the rest of the world very well in her Arizona bubble. Maybe one day she'd like to travel, but for the most part she was a homebody. "That's cool! I've always wanted to go see some place where it snows." She shivered slightly. "This would actually be the first time I've ever seen snow. Whenever I visit my grandparents--they live in the Midwest--it's during the summer. They usually come down for Christmas and stuff." She hadn't seen much of her maternal grandparents lately, but she didn't worry about it. They were all still pretty close.
Waverly gasped as Clara filled her in. "They shot one at Jade?" She had interacted with Amira just a little, but Clara would certainly know better. Her eyes hurried to scan the pitch and when she saw her roommate, she looked fine. Demelza was near her with her bat, so she assumed she had batted it away. Feeling relieved, she turned back to reply to Clara's question.
She shrugged slowly in response, her face still showing concern for her roommate's well-being. "I really hope Amira doesn't hate Jade that much! She's just, well, being really jealous then. Although I bet she would like her spot as Seeker back." It was unfortunate what had happened to Amira. Though she didn't know the whole story, she knew that she had gotten booted off the team for some medical reason. But it was Jade that did win the important final match for Pecari last year, so Waverly wasn't complaining.
Bludgers were Waverly's least favorite ball in the world. She watched the Quaffle get passed and then Thad hit one of those horrible bludgers at Jhonice. Though she didn't know the girl well, it was difficult not to know the names of the players that represented her house in Quidditch. And currently said-girl was stuck on her immovable broom without the Quaffle and with a bludger going straight toward her. "Jhonice!" she screeched, pulling at her scarf in vain. She wanted to cover her eyes, but that was probably not going to help the loud smack! she would hear if it hit her.
0WaverlyYou'll be more confident over time0Waverly05
Clara nodded absently at Waverly's reply to her question regarding her cousin Amira. They both seemed to agree that Amira couldn't possibly hate JAde that much and that she was mostly jealous over losing her spot as Seeker. Well, Clara thought it Waverly had the nerve to say it out loud, to which Clara was grateful. She had found herself getting ready to answer Waverly's question about Napa when she was distracted by Waverly screeching someone's name. She half covered her ears and shot her attention to where Waverly was looking. She saw the bludger heading for one of their housemates and Clara gasped. "NOOO!!" she screamed with Waverly's screech. "Duck! Move! Something!" she yelled desperately. She covered her eyes with her gloved hands and waited for the resounding Smack. When it didn't come she ventured a glance and didn't see the bludger or the girl it was heading towards anymore. She sighed slightly with relief and tried to calm down.
"Holy cow!" she exclaimed, watching the quaffle fly between teams. "How in the world anyone can enjoy this insanity is beyond me! I barely manage not to hurt myself on accident. These people hurt eachother on purpose! How is this fun? How could my cousins like it soo much?" Clara couldn't help wondering aloud. She knew she was slightly unbalanced and she was perfectly fine with that, but this was a completely different kind of crazy that the little 11 year old had a hard time understanding. She could understand a prank having gone wrong and a potion blowing up (both of which she's done), but Quidditch was a completely different matter. "I don't mean to offend you," she told Waverly. "But I really don't see how someone can enjoy having things hit at them with the intent to hurt them. I don't really think I like Quidditch much." She gave Waverly a small smile, but sat silently on the bench watching the players fly around. When it came to this sort of thing Clara truey felt lost.
It was about that time that she remembered Waverly's question about Napa. Looking for anything to take her mind off the game she answered Waverly's question. "Napa is in what some people call Northern California," she explained. "Its really pretty, but we don't get snow in the winter time. It rains mostly." The little red head shrugged her shoulders. To her the rain was normal. "I didn't know it snowed in Arizona. Have you always lived here?" she asked curiously.
"I totally get what you mean," Waverly replied to Clara's exclamation about the Bludgers. "It's such a violent game!" Though Waverly thought about playing it, she would first have to get used to the idea that there were iron balls flying around after you along with Chasers and Beaters who didn't care if they hurt you in order to win. Scary business.
"It's okay. I come mostly to support my house and my friends." Waverly smiled. "That's what you do too, right?" It made sense since Clara's cousins were a part of the team. Waverly tried to imagine what it would be like if her cousins went to school with her, but her dad was an only child and her cousins on her mom's side all lived in North Carolina. And they were kind of rich. It wasn't fair, seeing the way her parents tried to live without spending too much, when her cousins all got to live in big houses close to her maternal grandparents.
"Ooh, Northern California. I've always wanted to go to California! Well, I've driven close to there, like the border, but haven't actually gone to California. And especially not close to the Northern part." Waverly looked up at the clouds with furrowed brows. "It doesn't usually snow in Arizona. At least not where I live. I think it might just be because we live at a magical school. It's almost always hot during the day and super cold at night. Desert weather."
She smiled. "Yeah, I was born and raised here," she continued, playfully using an older voice to pretend like she was telling a long-winded story her Kansas grandpa would tell. She changed back to her normal voice and smiled. "I live in Phoenix which is a little ways away from here. In the city, that is."
Clara grinned at Waverly's comment about living her whole life in Arizona. "I know the feeling. I've lived in California my whole life too. This is the first time I've ever really been away from home, at least by myself. Usually when I visit my cousins in Oregon I'm with my dad," she told Waverly. "Being here at Sonora without him is a little weird, but its cool. Doesn't hurt that some of my cousins are here as well," she grinned. She found herself agreeing with Waverly about being out here watching the game for her cousins and her house. Outside of Waverly, Kitty and maybe Angel, Clara didn't really have any friends here at magic school yet. "Thats true...I suppose I am here to cheer on my house and my cousins despite the fact that I'm not really a fan of Quidditch," she chuckled at that last part. "Its kinda like flying class...not a big fan of that either to be honest." The little Pecari shrugged her shoulders.
She heard Waverly mention Phoenix and wondered what kind of city it must be especially being all the way out here in the desert. "Is Phoenix any fun?" she asked the older girl curiously. "In Napa, its mostly vineyards and horse ranches. It doesn't get too cold out there cause of the vineyards, so instead of snow we mostly get rain. Its super pretty at night though cause you can look up at the sky at night and see what looks like a sea of sparkly little lights across the sky." "Do you get to see stuff like that in Phoenix?" she inquired, turning slightly back towards the game.
Sure! Except without the burning and coming back to life...

Waverly smiled. "Yeah, I remember my first flying class. It was so scary. I partnered up with this guy named Angel and he told me a little bit about Quidditch so I decided to check it out myself." It was understandable not to be a fan of Quidditch. But the more Waverly came out to these games, the more she liked coming for the social and competitive atmosphere. It brought out her competitive streak. Plus it was just fun to get excited about something.
She almost beamed when Clara asked about Phoenix. She didn't get a chance to talk about her hometown too much, and now Clara was giving her the perfect opportunity to. "Aw, that's cool," she replied on Clara's description of Napa. It sounded like a lovely place. Especially being able to see stars and all. "The sunsets are so beautiful in the desert," she sighed nostalgically.
"On really clear nights out in the desert, you can see stars, but I bet not as many as you can see in Napa! I live in the city, so it's more crowded and lit so I can't see as many stars around my apartment. I don't think vineyards could grow in Phoenix. We mostly have cactus plants and other plants like that. It's mostly just hot and dry, so that's what I'm used to. My parents like to bike ride and hike a lot which is why they moved there, I think, so they could do outdoors stuff year-round."
Waverly shivered a little. "You must be used to this weather then! Well, at least to the rain. When it rains in Phoenix, a lot of the times it's just warm rain so it's not all that great. And it warms very little. I think it would be really cool to visit Napa! Or just Northern California in general. Is that near San Francisco?"
